Television folk are always using religious themes, expressions, and God talk. I think it is mostly unconscious. One that keeps cropping up is, “If you want to make God smile, tell Him your plans.” Interesting enough, it is the same advice delivered by James to his congregation. He cautioned against saying what you are going to do tomorrow. “Instead, you ought to say, ‘If it is the Lord’s will.” (James 4:13-17). Before that, wisdom declared “In his heart a man plans his course, but the LORD determines his steps. (Proverbs 16:9). I know better than to say absolutely what I am going to do even after praying about it and thinking I have God’s leadership. So, even though I have indicated that my time as your interim pastor would end December 31, it’s not going to end December 31 (Lord willing). We have set six weeks in the new year as an extension of my time with you with the understanding that if the Lord and circumstances demand it could be longer. Now all this does not mean that we are not to plan. In fact, we had slowed up on our planning when we thought a new pastor would be here by January. That was a mistake. We are being a church now. We have worshipping to do. We have teaching to do. We have ministry to perform. We have a mission to pursue. We have workers to recruit and train. We have leaders to inspire. We cannot wait until the next pastor comes to get going. We should be up to speed when the pastor shows up. Intentional Interim ministry is a time when a church family is given the luxury of pausing in their journey, looking inward and asking three critical questions: “Where have we been? “ “Where are we now?” and “Where are we going.” Getting some clear answers to these questions leads to answers of the two major identity questions: “Who is Knightdale Baptist Church?” and “How shall we then behave.” This experience corresponds to the experience of Jesus as he began and pursued his ministry. At his Baptism the voice of God identified him as “My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” Immediately he was driven into the wilderness to be with God and struggle with the question, “How shall I then behave.” It also corresponds with the experience of God’s people in the wilderness. Rescued from slavery they lapsed into idolatry and pagan worship. Their leader, Moses was gone. They spent the nest forty years in the wilderness before they were ready to move on with God to the promised land. A friend and I were discussing how churches get to the place where they seem to be going down hill and what can be done to get them going back up. I suggested that they have lost their joy. He suggested that they have lost their focus. We agreed that when they regain their proper focus (the mission of God) and begin to use their gifts in the service of the Master they will regain their joy. I sense a rising joy among members of our congregation. There is a fresh energy powered by the moving of the Spirit among us. A small number of persons have committed to pray seriously for the major concerns of the church. For example, we are praying for our worship services and you will note that those prayers have been answered. People are even telling me that I have finally become a decent preacher. I note this just to give credit where credit is due. Thanks be to God. Another example is how beautiful these church facilities are right now. It lifts one’s heart just to be on the premises. I want to challenge each of you to help us catch the winds of the Spirit in our sails as we move forward in our mission. We know very well who we are. We are a great commandment church. We love God, our neighbor and ourselves. We are a great commission church. We are on a mission to make disciples and teach them. We are in the world, but not of it and the twenty first century is our stage. And we are answerable to a loving, righteous God. We have been at anchor long enough. It’s time to weigh anchor. The order of the day is to get under way and set the sails to catch the winds of the Spirit. Do not miss one opportunity to worship. Pray without ceasing. Discover your gifts and dedicate them to God in service. ALL HANDS ON DECK! God bless us all! Church Council

In recent months there has been some confusion as to who serves as a member of the Church Council. The new constitution and by-laws address that the council shall have as regular members the pastor, ministry staff leaders, Sunday school director, chairs of the five teams (teams addressed in another article in this newsletter) and chairperson of the diaconate. Other church officers or leaders may be selected by the council.

The current members consist of the following individuals:

Pastor Dr. Dorman Fellowship Team Beverly Hinton Minister of Worship Hal Roach Mission Team Robin Farrington Minister of Youth Open Discipleship Team Terry Johnson SS Director Terry Johnson Deacon chair Philip Humphries Worship Team Hal Roach CMT DeAnne Talley Evangelism Team Open YMT Terri Lucas

Please note that other leaders of organization and committees are very important in the work and ministry of this church but to function, a council cannot be but so large. Other leaders should submit reports to a member of the Church Council that covers the subject matter under that Church Council member's responsibilities.

The primary function of the council is to review, coordinate, plan and calendar programs and events of the church. All programs and events not already approved must be submitted to the council for a recommendation to be made to the church for approval or disapproval. Programs and events not sanctioned by the council and approved by the church will not be deemed a function of KBC. The next Church Council meeting will be Sunday, January 8th at 4:00 pm in the Conference Room.

Upcoming YAK Events: BeDoTell Ski Trip - February 24th - 26th. Winterplace Ski Resort, Flat Top, WV.

The Deacons would like to thank the church family for the outpouring of toys for the “White Christmas” collection. We helped over 15 children this Christmas and the families were very grateful.

Thank You

The next “Kids Night Out” will be Friday, January 27th from 7:00 - 8:30 pm. All children through 6th grade are welcome!

Roger Nix, Executive Director of the Raleigh Baptist Association (RBA) recently sent a letter to KBC to say how grateful they are for the churches which have continued to faithfully support the work and ministry of the

RBA during 2011. KBC was able to increase it contributions to the RBA from $1500 in 2010 to $9,976.01 in 2011. That is a +565% increase. This is the

largest increase of 2011 for any church in the RBA. Roger says, “May the Lord bless and strengthen your ministry and mission outreach in 2012.”

Join A Team In The New Year KBC made the decision some years ago to establish five TEAMS. Teams are organized around the five biblical purposes of the Church. The teams are Worship, Evangelism, Mission/Ministry, Discipleship and Fellowship. WORSHIP TEAM This team is responsible for all worship related activities and committees. Under this team are Baptism, Flower and Communion Committees. EVANGELISM/OUTREACH TEAM This team is responsible for community outreach, FLC programming, Koffee Before Church and coordinating visitation of guest who visit our church. Public relations needs, both inside and outside the church, is another important function. FELLOWSHIP TEAM This team is responsible for all church-wide fellowship and social activities to include Homecoming, quarterly Sunday School breakfast and other similar events. This is sometimes called the “food and beverage” team. MINISRY/MISSION TEAM This team is responsible for local mission projects that include Children’s Ministry Team, Brotherhood, Women’s Missionary Union and Youth Ministry Team. This team is responsible for bereavement visitation, hospital visitation, shut-in visitation, community food pantry and other ministries. This team has a wide scope of responsibilities in ministry and missions. DISCIPLESHIP TEAM This team is responsible for Bible studies, Sunday School activities such as recruiting and training teachers. ALL TEAMS work closely with our Ministry staff but each team elects a chairperson each church year. Each team also has two or more deacons as team members. All church members must get involved and be willing to serve on these teams in order to carry out the Mission of our Church. The concept of having teams is to not work just a few members so much, but to have wide involvement of all members. In recent weeks we have studied what a JOY it is to serve God and minister to others. In future weeks you will hear more about stewardship which includes the giving of your time and talents. Beginning in January we will promote these TEAMS and ask every church member to sign up to be on at least one team. Working together as a team we can accomplish great things and have that inner peace and joy that will come from serving our Lord and Savior. Look for opportunities to sign up to be a TEAM MEMBER!
