Kansas Bankers:

Like most Kansas bankers, my hope was that 2016 Presidential and

Congressional elections could be the catalyst for a new attitude in our

nation’s Capitol toward community banks, acknowledging the critical

role they play in the economic life of our communities, states and

nation. We realized the President and Congress would need to do their

part to change that tone, but we also came to understand that the

regulatory agencies themselves had the ability to modify and roll back

much of the regulation that is crushing the banking industry and taking

away from our ability to provide the capital needed to drive economic

growth in the country. As 2017 draws to a close, it is gratifying to see

meaningful steps finally being taken toward comprehensive regulatory

relief for community banks, while also pursuing tax reform policies

designed to make banks and our business customers more competitive

in today’s global marketplace.

I hope you will plan to join me at the Topeka Country Club on

Wednesday, February 7th for the 2018 version of the Harold A. Stones Public Affairs Conference. You’ll

hear the latest news from the political front lines in Washington, D.C. shared by Rob Engstrom, the

recently hired chief political strategist for the American Bankers Association. We are also pleased to have

key legislative staff members working for the Kansas Congressional Delegation joining us at this year’s

conference to provide us with insight on key legislative initiatives.

This year’s conference will also highlight the latest challenges facing our state legislative leaders, including

the ongoing state budgetary issues relating to school finance. Adding to this year’s mix of exceptional

speakers will be a “State of Kansas Banking” update from Kansas State Bank Commissioner Miki Bowman

and a special report from Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt on the steps being taken to curb

financial abuse of elders in Kansas.

This special event will once again conclude with a reception at Topeka Country Club, where we will host

statewide elected officials and all 165 members of the Kansas Legislature. KBA always achieves an

excellent turnout of State Senators and State Representatives, so I hope we can count on you to join us to

personally thank them for their service to Kansas and to impress upon them the vitally important role

played by the Kansas banking industry.

I look forward to seeing you at Topeka Country Club on February 7th.

Sincerely,

Ron Johnson

KBA Chairman

Thank you to our generous sponsors!
