2008-2009 Board of Trustees

Letter From the Head of School

Jerri King Head of School

FMSA sits on hallowed ground of sorts, and the landscape of this bit of dirt was

forever changed in 2009. Montessori has been lived and taught on this patch of

earth, under the tall pine trees and along side the creek and neighborhoods, for over 35

years. Cars and buses have departed on Going-Outs and Field Trips. Opera costumes

have been made and steps choreographed. Telegraphs, pyramids, catapults have been

built with Legos, wire and whatever young minds needed to make their interests come

alive. Paths to the future have been discovered by students and adults, alike after

exploring, questioning, wondering and working on this campus. It is common for

alumni who walked here years ago to come back to reminisce about the experiences

they had which still impact their lives. They tell of the opera experience that led

them to study and enjoy theater in college or the love of math that led them to ask

their next teacher to please teach them trigonometry. And in 2009, state of the art

buildings were opened to accommodate state of the art education. First Montessori

and the students who are fortunate enough to work, play and discover here will be

forever impacted by the dedication of the alumni, parents, Trustees, faculty and staff

who committed to this next step of growth in the life of the school. The 2008-2009

school year was a great new chapter in the First Montessori 45-year history and there

is only more to come.

Letter From the Board Chair

Letter From the 2008-2009 Annual Fund Chair

Looking back to the beginning of the 2008-2009 school year at First Montessori School of Atlanta, it seems so long

ago that the faculty, staff and numerous volunteers were scrambling to prepare the new buildings for our children! Indeed,

as we are almost halfway through our second year in the new buildings I am struck by how well the new facilities have

enhanced a true campus setting that benefits each child every day. Although we welcomed new buildings and a difficult

economy at the same time, we can thank the generosity of many donors and the stewardship of my predecessors on the

Board for placing FMSA on solid financial footing. In uncertain times, I believe it is important to look back at the 45-year

history FMSA has of delivering on its promise to our students and their parents. In 1963, a small group of Atlanta parents

inspired by the teachings of Maria Montessori opened the first Montessori school in the Southeast United States. Using a

classroom rented at Pace Academy, FMSA consisted of eight students, a teacher recruited from England, and an assortment

of materials imported from Holland. Ten years later, construction of the school on Long Island Drive was completed. The

vision and dedication of those original parents and faculty to create a premier Montessori school and to construct an

award winning building ideally suited to Montessori learning continues to inspire the First Montessori community as we

approach our half century mark. As you review this Annual Report, I hope you share my optimism for the future of our great

institution. I look back over the year and am tremendously grateful to Jerri King and her talented and dedicated faculty and

staff for executing our mission:

I wish to thank all the members of the First Montessori School of Atlanta community who generously contributed

to the 2008-2009 Annual Fund. Through your support, we collected over $78,000 in unrestricted funds to help supplement

our school’s operating budget. 82% of the families in our community and 100% of our faculty, staff and Board of Trustees

contributed to this effort. Proceeds from the Annual Fund are an important part of our community goal to provide the

highest level of Montessori education. These proceeds help to enhance our programs and facilities and help minimize

tuition increases. I also would like to thank all the volunteers and staff that helped to make our 2008-2009 Annual Fund

drive a success. Many volunteers participated in the water bottle hand-out, Phonathon, and behind the scenes coordination

efforts. Once again, thank you for your support of the 2008-2009 Annual Fund and please continue to contribute generously

to this year’s Annual Fund drive.

Letter From the Board Chair

From Bert Jones, 2009-2010 Annual Fund Chair

As an introduction to the school’s Annual Report, I would like to thank you for your support of - and trust in - First Montessori School

of Atlanta during the 2009-2010 school year. The primary role of the Board of Trustees is to ensure the continued long-term stability

of the school. To that end, the Board approved a six-year strategic plan at the beginning of 2010 that identifies major initiatives to

be guided by Jerri King and her staff. Those initiatives are designed to improve and promote the school’s programs so we may bring more families into the First

Montessori community. Despite dire predictions for private schools during the depths of the difficult economic downturn, your steadfast support of the school has

kept enrollment steady. The school continues to stand on solid financial footing thanks to prudent management by Jerri and her staff in concert with a group of

bright, tireless Trustees. In 1963, a small group of Atlanta parents inspired by the teachings of Maria Montessori opened the first Montessori school in the Southeast

United States. Using a classroom rented at Pace Academy, FMSA consisted of eight students, a teacher recruited from England, and an assortment of materials

imported from Holland. Ten years later, construction of the school on Long Island Drive was completed. The vision and dedication of those original parents and

faculty to create a premier Montessori school continues to inspire the First Montessori community as we approach our half century mark. As you review this Annual

Report, I hope you share my optimism for the future of our great institution. My gratitude to Jerri and her talented and dedicated faculty and staff grows greater

each year. Their contributions to this fine institution cannot be overstated.

The Annual Fund touches every child, teacher, classroom and program at FMSA. When you give, you help to significantly improve the

learning environment for your child. Last year’s record level of over $91,000 resulted from the generosity of 90% of FMSA’s parents,

and 100% of faculty, staff and Trustees. These unrestricted gifts helped to buy books for the Media Center, make improvements at the

Landschool, and make good progress toward funding an awning for the pick-up carpool area. The FMSA community of parents, faculty and staff is a diverse, strong

family who passionately believe that First Montessori is unparalleled in developing creative, life-long learners who will greatly contribute to society. Our country and

our world will need citizens with these traits more acutely in the future than ever before. As important as that is, these are your children. I know you want to do all you

can to invest in their future right now. The Annual Fund is a great way to do that. The Annual Fund is a big undertaking. I want to thank everyone who helped last year,

including those who gave money, and thank this year’s participants in advance. Please continue to give generously. It’s important.

Letters

From Steve DeVinney, Board Chair

From Jerri King, Head of School

The 2009-2010 school year was a year of commitment. This was evident in the AMI

re-accreditation process as the consultant team commended First Montessori School

of Atlanta’s long time commitment to excellence in Montessori education. The Toddler

class was acknowledged at the national Montessori professional development event,

and First Montessori was encouraged to consider adding another Toddler class to the

Lower School program.

First Montessori student commitment to engaged learning was obvious at every turn

– global education programs, poetry events, history parades, sixth year projects, a

sustained cumulative ITBS school score of 99% and another Middle School graduation.

Commitment was also highly visible in regard to the Annual Fund, as 100% of the

Trustees, Faculty and Staff kept to tradition and pledged their support and the parent

community reached an all time high participation of 90%. This combined effort resulted

in the highest amount raised for the Annual Fund in the school’s history – over $91,000!

Stakeholder commitment to excellence and current and future programs will support

First Montessori’s successful fulfillment of its mission – today and in the future. This is

an exciting time in the life of the school and I can’t wait to see the impact on your child’s

life and in the lives of those to come.

Events

Our 15th annual Grandparents and Special Friends Day proved true to its reputation

as one of our most anticipated and loved events of the year. The morning began

with a Coffee Social--a time for refreshments, conversation, and goodies and door

prizes. The grandparents and special friends then enjoyed a musical performance

by one of our Middle School students, Zachary Tolchin. The morning continued

with comments from our Art Teacher, Theresa Dean, as well as three of our current

students. Thoroughly entertained, the special guests were able to visit the Learning

Stations, which displayed samples of the work to be found at each level of Montessori

education. Visitors were then dismissed to the classrooms to learn more about all of

the fascinating work that takes place there. At the end of the morning, everyone was

able to have a special photo taken as a memento of the day.

Grandparents and Special Friends Day

Montessori Mile

This year’s Montessori Mile, held on Saturday, October 17th, was an exciting morning filled with laughter

and community. Our 15th annual Montessori Mile was another memorable event due to the passion

and enthusiasm of the 200+ folks who came out to run, cheer and enjoy camaraderie. We welcomed

current and former students and parents on this crisp fall morning to run our infamous one-mile course.

Middle School Graduation

The garden at Williams-Payne House in Sandy Springs was the setting for the Middle

School graduation ceremony on June 3rd. The ceremony was the culmination of the

students’ years of experience at First Montessori, during which they developed the

academic and social skills needed to thrive in high school. The audience enjoyed

a musical performance by the Elementary Chorus, which was followed by speeches

given by this year’s five graduates: Eli King, Shawdon Zadeh, Tyler Holmes, Apryl

House and Daniel Colville. Each spoke about the significance of his or her time at

First Montessori and offered advice to the 7th year students.
