Introduction

As part of a 3 year plan to improve KAYA’s IT infrastructure we will discuss three possible scenarios that will primarily address current storage space issues and improve our corporate disaster recovery solution. As a separate effort we will also begin piloting a VDI (Virtual Desktop Infrastructure) at the corporate site.

Page 4: KAYA 3 Yr Plan FINAL with Notes

Objectives

• Address Low Storage Space– 2 TB total storage at Kentucky (30 GB free)– 16 TB of total storage at corporate (4 TB free)– Staff at Kentucky site have been asked to

save drawings to local desktop due to lack of storage

– Estimate free space at corporate depleted within 12 months

Page 5: KAYA 3 Yr Plan FINAL with Notes

Objectives cont.

• Improve Disaster Recovery Solution– Add or upgrade storage at Kentucky and

corporate sites – Repurpose existing Dell servers from

corporate to Kentucky site– A larger room will be required at the Kentucky

site along with A/C and 220V power installed in the room as well as a 42U rack and UPS procured (cost not included for these items)

Page 6: KAYA 3 Yr Plan FINAL with Notes

Objectives cont.

• Implement a VDI Pilot– Small group of users – Reutilize existing desktops/laptops to keep

costs down– ~4 weeks to implement virtual servers and

build desktop image– Pilot and test for ~8 weeks– Determine if VDI is the right move for KAYA

Page 7: KAYA 3 Yr Plan FINAL with Notes

Storage Solutions – Scenario 1

• Scenario 1 (Add to existing storage)– Phase I (Procurement)– Phase II (Implement storage at Corporate)

• Implement the Dell PowerVault MD3200i iSCSI SAN (12 TB)

• Migrate data as needed to utilize new storage– Phase III (Kentucky Upgrades)

• Move 4 TB LeftHand array to Kentucky• Move 2 legacy Dell R805 ESX servers to Kentucky• Migrate data as needed to utilize new storage

Page 8: KAYA 3 Yr Plan FINAL with Notes

Storage Solutions – Scenario 2

• Scenario 2 (Nimble)– Phase I (Procurement)– Phase II (Nimble Implementation)

• Implement the array• Migrate VM’s and data from 4 TB LeftHand array

to Nimble array– Phase III (Kentucky Upgrades)

• Move the 4 TB LeftHand array to Kentucky• Move 2 legacy Dell R805 ESX servers to Kentucky• Migrate data as needed to utilize new storage

Page 9: KAYA 3 Yr Plan FINAL with Notes

Storage Solutions – Scenario 3

• Scenario 3 (Nutanix Complete Cluster)– Phase I (Procurement)– Phase II (Nutanix Implementation)

• Implement the appliance• Migrate virtual machines and data from the Dell

servers and 4 TB LeftHand array to Nutanix cluster– Phase III (Kentucky Upgrades)

• Move two of the current production Dell servers and 4 TB LeftHand array to Kentucky

Issue: Address lack of storage by adding to existing storage at corporate and Kentucky sites. Two Dell Dell R805 servers would also be repurposed at the Kentucky site.

Closure: Additional hardware implemented and available for production use.

*Timelines do not include the necessary time to prepare a larger room at the Kentucky site.

Benefits of VDI

• Improved Security– Security is increased due to the data and OS

files being located in the data center rather than on a physical laptop/desktop.

– Non-persistent or throw away desktops allow for security updates to be managed from a single master parent image.

Page 18: KAYA 3 Yr Plan FINAL with Notes

Benefits of VDI cont.

• Simplified Desktop Administration– By using non-persistent or throw away desktops

administrators only need to manage one master image to make changes to all desktops.

• Easier Remote Access to Desktops– A View Security Server allows users to access a

desktop on the corporate intranet without going through a VPN. Mobile devices such as tablets and smart phones can also easily connect to desktops.
