KAW December 2014
Schoolsreference projects by KAW
Introduction
In Dutch KAW stands in short for “Cooperative Architecture
Working Area” and was founded in 1976. The KAW philosophy is to
improve people’s living atmosphere and feeling of happiness therein.
We do this through creativity, sustainability and innovation, giving the
feeling of spatial freedom and togetherness. We are not the avarage
Architects. Our aim is to develop the right environment in which
people are living and working. As such this concerns their homes,
workplaces, neighbourhoods, districts and villages. To achieve this,
we dram on a unique combination of disciplines: architecture, town
development, public housing, process management, real estate and
engineering. This makes us an unique, broad serviceable company.
We work with approximately 50 competent people from Groningen,
Rotterdam and Eindhoven.

Children aren’t childish
Children and their teachers all
want a school building where they
can learn and work happily. A
building they can make their own
and be proud of. A building that
challenges. Not patronizing, but
a sturdy building with beautiful
attention to detail.
Our goal is to create buildings that
the children can not only learn in,
but also learn from. Needless to
say, the building has to be functi-
onal, safe, sustainable and provide
a healthy learning climate. But
mostly, we create schools that
leave room for the development
of the children and the teachers.
To realise this functional and
beautiful school building, we
design the building together with
the users. We use clear presen-
tation techniques such as BIM
(Building Information Modelling),
to make choices clear and easy to
understand for everyone.

Demographic change urges the school, the gymnasium and the community centre to join together in one building. KAW designed a multifunctional
building with an important role for nature. The building, with its flowing forms, fits snugly between the majestic trees. The class rooms offer maximum
interaction with the green outdoors with its glass walls. The challenge for the architects was to create a building for more users within the same square
metre limitation. They succeeded in designing a building that allows for everyone to have their own room comfortably.

Practical environmental protection is one of the most important mottos of ´Het Talent´. An elementary school, a kindergarten and a daycare centre
worked closely together for this new building. The design is based on a high standard of environmental protection with low cost of ownership and
includes the green of the post-war area. An auditorium with air space is a bright and open center along with the grand staircase in the building.

Design of a culture centre consisting of a village school, a day-nursery, a supermarket, a gymnasium, a grand café and an activity centre for people with
limited capabilities. The complex is multifunctional and can for example be used as a theatre, and has since its opening in December 2009 brought life
back to the little village.

Joseph Haydn School Groningen
The old school building of the Joseph Haydnschool in Groningen has been transformed into a chic new building. The biggest challenge in the design were
the two existing gymnasiums between which the new programme had to be placed. The new design folds neatly over the existing gymnasiums. The school
is the new home for the primary school, children’s day care and the sports education of Zernike College.

Renovation and expansion of the city gymnasium. The growing number of students was the motivation to ask KAW for a spatial concept that integrates
the educational vision in the existing building. The design has been developed in close collaboration with the school and the students. Today, the school
offers modern, spacious rooms with the central theatre as the main event space.

Noorderpoort College Groningen
As a result of a change in educational programme, the building of Noorderpoortcollege Muntinglaan is being renovated. For 50 years now, this building is
being used for technical eduction. That is why it is in the collective memory of many Groningers and so demolition was no option. KAW will design the
renovated building, which has to become the face of Noorderpoortcollege Muntinglaan.

Children’s Daycare Centre ‘De Boemerang’ Hilversum
For children’s daycare centre ‘De Boemerang’ it is the main challenge to work with the wishes and commands of the principals, personel and users to
make the building fun and accessible for children with a developmental delay. The building has to be flexible so it can be used in different ways in the near
future.

The school for disabled children from 4 to 18 years old is part of a residential care campus in forested surroundings. The building consists of 2 zones, a
sturdy zone for the older kids and a more soft, friendly zone for the youngsters. Yet the outside shows one building that, with its wooden construction
and green roof, blends in subtly with its green surroundings. The ‘active building’ has a natural ventilation, a heat pump and the roof is completely covered
with solar cells. The cross-section brings natural light throughout the building.

The new multifunctional building had to be designed in such a way, that a primary school could be added to the building later. The building houses a
library, community centre, gymnasium and a care centre. A major challenge in the design was to give all the parties the square meters they need within a
very limited budget. By designing the spaces optimally multifunctional, the building now counts 33% less GFA than required initially whilst giving all parties
the space they need.
