About The Author

My name is Katie Grande and I am a graduate of Indiana University Bloomington where I studied to be an elementary school teacher. I currently teach at Dela-ware Trail Elementary school in Brownsburg, Indiana. I had wanted to be a teacher for as long as I can remember. I am creating this book as a project to show my knowledge and understanding of not only the topic but also of how to use technology. I believe that using technology in the classroom can be a very useful thing, however one must use it sparingly and in the correct manner or else you run the risk of losing the students attention and interest. This book is a way for stu-dents to see technology in the classroom and also learn. This book will have so much more than just words for students to read. It will have all sorts of interac-tive widgets to make sure that the students are engaged in their learning.

1

User Guide

Throughout this book you will find little things called widgets. These can be videos, quizzes, and a multitude of other things. These things are designed to help check your understanding, give you more information, or review. For instance, if the widget below showed up on your page you would need to read the question and click

on the answer that you think is correct. Then you can check your answer and move on to the next page or next activity. If their is a video click it to watch before you move on to whats on the page. Three Levels of Government Interactive 1.1 What is Government

Watch as a human tries to explain what government is to an alien.

Local government is in charge of the individual towns and cities. So for us the local government is in charge of all of Hendricks County. This means that the all of the people who live in Brownsburg, Avon, Clayton, Coatesville, Danville, Lizton, North Salem, Plainfield, Pittsboro, and Stilesville are all following the rules from the same people.

ResponsibilitiesSECTION 1

Local government is responsible for things like firefighters, police, and the people in the ambulances who get to you first when you’re in trouble. They also give us things like smooth roads, libraries, sports fields, parks, and other places to play and have fun. The local government also takes away any trash. Without that we would have some stinky towns! Some other things that the local government is responsi-ble for are electricity, natural gas, and water.

5

Duties

SECTION 2

Most of the duties that the local gov-ernment has are the same as the re-sponsibilities. However, these duties have to be granted to the local govern-ments by the state.

Each state in the country has their own government. The Indiana state government could make laws that are different from California, Texas or New York. The state government has three branches that it is split into. The executive branch has the governor in charge. The governor is elected by the people in the state. The legislative branch is made up of two groups of elected officials. The third branch is the judicial branch. They have a state supreme court and lower level state courts.

State Government

3

Responsibilities SECTION 1

State governments are in charge of people getting a license to drive, fish, and hunt. They also make tests that lawyers, teachers, and other profes-sionals have to pass that want to work in that state. If someone wants to make a change to the Constitution then 38 or more states have to say yes. If you’re sick and go to a hospital then it is under control of the state government. States make sure that hospitals are doing the things they need to. The last thing that states are responsible for is electing the presi-dent.

8

Duties

SECTION 2

In the State Government there are people who represent our state called congressmen and congresswomen. State government is here to make sure that all the important jobs in our society run smoothly.

Interactive 3.1 Maze Time!

The national government, also known as the federal government, is in charge of everyone in the country. They have three branches just like the state govern-ment. The executive branch is run by the president. It also has the vice president and many other who work for the president. The legislative branch is made up of the House of Representatives and the Sen-ate. The judicial branch is made up of the supreme court.

Responsibilities

SECTION 1

They are in charge of making sure we can fly safely. They also control the money that we have. They control the military which protects us and keeps the country free. Federal government also protects endangered animals and plants. They are in charge of making sure all the medicines and food we have are safe and won’t kill us. They also research to help cure diseases.

11

Duties

SECTION 2

There are a lot of people in the Fed-eral government and they have a lot of different duties. The President is in charge of everyone and everything in the country. The Vice President helps the President with everything he needs. The Cabinet are the people who help the President make decisions in different organizations. Congress works on making new laws. The Su-preme court makes sure that everyone is following the rules that the constitu-tion has.
