1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real
media products?
We looked at various crime films and in our 2 minute 30 second opening we are having a drug deal andan interrogation scene. We created questionnaires to discover what people would prefer as a genreand what they would want to be included in it. From our questionnaire I found out that Crime-Thriller was most popular, so having James Phillips being framed is that hint of thrill.
We had an interrogation scene about the dealings of drugs along with a flashback of clips involvingviolence and other aspects of a crime. For the interrogation we went for the typical scene with thedefendant being questioned by two cops in a small dark room. The flashback contains pretty muchevery thing discussed in the interrogation but it still doesnt give too much away.
We have not involved the use of swearing in our scenes along with any element of murder because dueto the fact that were only filming 2 minutes 30 seconds worth, having those elements might givetoo much away. Also we dont have an arrest scene in our piece or our villain in a prison.
The film Snatch is a well-known crime film and has a similar story line to ours. We have used similar
opening credits as Snatch and have adapted the powerful entrance of the title to our piece. Insnatch they use a lot of high-speed photography in action sequences and in those photos violenceis used, which we interoperated into our flashback.
The fact that the film is a crime genre and aged for over fifteens, allows the audience to expect violenceand drug use.

How does your media product represent particular social groups?
We represented gender by having a women as the dominant police officer, usual stereotypes are thatwomen are insignificant and has less power than men but in our piece we have her as a dominantwomen interrogating the male. We represented profession but not in a specific way, we have twoprofessions teacher and officer but they are both in the same rank. In our camera angles we havemade sure that when were filming the villain it is at a higher angle so he is portrayed morevulnerable and when focused on the more dominant characters (police officers) a lower angle.
In the interrogation room we have paired both officers together, the man behind the women standing whichautomatically asserts him with more dominance, the fact that he is behind the women makes him looklike he is some sort of back up to make the defendant feel bullied and cornered.
Are these representations conventional or do they challenge the stereotype? These representations Ithink do challenge the stereotype, usually women are inferior to men but in our piece we have thewomen over powering the men.
In our production we havent assigned a villain but our opinions change
in the second scene due to his facial expressions he gives when hereceives. We used the narrative theory of enigma. This idea we created
suspense for the audience for example they could not judge if the
protagonist was the villain or the hero this is convention to many crime
films as there is always that tense dramatic atmosphere, created
through confusion.

3.What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
The film distribution I would use is Warner Bros. I have chosen this company due to the otherfilms they have distributed- Lethal Weapon, Analyze This and Dirty Harry which are allcrime films. Also the films warner bros have distributed are the most successful (HarryPotter, Sherlock Holmes, Final Destination)
I would distribute my film during school
holidays, mainly summer because all students
are on vacation and have time to go to the
cinemas.
My method of distribution would be multiplex because I think crime films do very
well in cinemas so I think independent wouldnt be big enough. I would advertise
on TV and online due to our certification is 15 and most people of that age are
oriented around TV and online

4. Who would be the audience for your media product?
Name: Barny Purvis
Age: 17
Favorite film genre: Comedy,
Crime, Thriller
Favorite Music: Dubstep,
House, Acoustic.
Name: Selen Arioglou
Age: 16
Favorite film genre: Comedy,
Chick Flick
Favorite Music: Drake
My certification for my product is a 15. Due to the certification when we film our drug scene, we make sure
not promote or encourage drug misuse. The slight glimpse of violence isnt strong or gory and doesnt dwell
on the infliction of pain or injury. Even though strong language may be frequent (for example, fuck) We
havent used any in our opening scene because it wasnt necessary.

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing
this product?
To complete my product I used final cut, live type, iMovie and garage band. I have never usedany of these softwares before so using them was difficult. All the cutting was done on final cut which
was very straight forward. Skills I learnt were how to add effects from one seen to another, fade out Iused a lot during the interrogation scenes because of the tense effect it gave.
My biggest skill I gained I think was garage band, it took a long time to piece together music that fitted wellwith our genre but I think what we pieced together suited it well, along with the soundtrack we also made
music for our flashback which sounds very good.
For most of our scenes we used the
tripod the canon 600d, for the walkingscenes we filmed on the dolly. Wit the
dolly we had to dub the sound due to
it being very loud when we moved it,
so we didnt use a lot of that footage.
For all of the clips of our villain
(James Phillips) and for the close ups
of the tape recorder etc I used acamera rig.

7.Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in
the progression from it to the full product?
What have you learnt about using the equipment and the different techniques applied to editing? I havelearnt a lot about the equipment and the different techniques applied to editing. In the preliminary taskthe editing was very basic, all we did was cut, whereas in the final product the transitions into each sceneis smooth and easy on the eyes. I think the text we used in the preliminary task was very boring and ad norelevance to the piece itself, in our final product we took a long time figuring out what font suits thetheme the most and when and where it should be placed on the screen
I am very aware of the 180 degree rule now, I realise that if you dont abide by it the angles would be all
wrong and it wouldnt look realistic in any way. Also I paid a lot of attention to where eyes would bedrawn in the scenes that we were filming so I made sure that the angles being shot werentdistracting
How important is planning and re-shooting footage? For us, planning was very important due to our actorsbeing unavailable we had to change our final scene and re-shoot shots too. Re-shooting footage is veryimportant; a lot of our first shots were poor so redoing them improved a lot of our footage.
The preliminary task we did a lot of cutting in final cut, so knowing that helped us a huge amount in our finalproduct. Also learning how to use Livetype and how to layer it over our work was a big thing that I learnt.
