Transcript of Kathleen Rathbun, founder and Artistic Director of Ballet ...€¦ · Sat-Sun, Mar 10-11 Syracuse...
Kathleen Rathbun, founder and
Artistic Director of Ballet and Dance of Upstate
NY, Inc. wanted to create a space for dancers who
shared a passion and eagerness to learn dance. She
didn't want her school to replicate the many other
schools that just attend class and perform in a
yearly recital; but instead a school that allowed
students to be mentored, inspired by professionals,
and fully immersed into the art of dance.
Over the past 25 years, Ballet and Dance has
become Upstate New York's most prominent
and premier school for ballet and dance training.
Offering the highest quality of teaching in Ballet,
Pointe, Modern, Contemporary, Jazz and Tap,
Kathleen Rathbun's Artistic staff provides students
with the tools to become professionals in the dance world. Rathbun's unique, teaching
style not only embodies the significance of technique, discipline, detail and musicality;
but also motivates her students to become profound in their own artistic voices.
Whether or not her students decide to pursue dance professionally, the skills they
have acquired through her style of training will enrich and prepare them for their
chosen avenues of success.
Many students who have trained at Ballet and Dance of Upstate NY, Inc have gone on to
study dance at professional schools and colleges, excelled in prestigious summer intensives and
have been hired in major dance companies internationally.
Summer programs such as; ABT Summer program, The Rock School Summer
program, Boston Ballet Summer Program, Joffrey Ballet School Summer Intensive,
NYSSSA Ballet, CPYB, and Chautauqua Ballet.
Schools such as; The Rock School for Dance Education, The Kirov Academy,
Mercyhurst University, Marymount Manhattan College and Adelphi College.
Dance companies such as; Cincinnati Ballet, The Washington Studio Ballet
Company, Idaho Ballet, American National Ballet and BalletMET.
ATTENDANCE Regular attendance is very important. If a student misses four classes or more in a quarter
without making up, he/she will be dropped to a lower level until makeups are completed.
If a student missed more than four classes during the 3rd & 4th quarter the instructor will
decide if a student will perform and in what capacity in the June performances.
CLASS CANCELLATION Classes cancelled due to inclement weather will be announced on WSYR-9.
An email notification will also be sent from the school
BULLYING Ballet and Dance is committed to providing a safe, positive learning environment for its
students. B&D understands that bullying creates an atmosphere of fear and intimidation
which is distracting from our mission and may lead to more serious issues of violence.
B&D will not tolerate bullying whether it is verbal, electronic, written or physical and
regardless whether it takes place in the ballet studio, theater or on social media. Anyone
who witnesses or experiences any act of bullying by a B&D student should report it to
their teacher immediately. All complaints of bullying will be investigated and addressed.

In 1997, Ms. Rathbun brought classical ballet back to Central New York with the founding
of Syracuse City Ballet (formerly Upstate NY Ballet) — the area’s only professional ballet
company— where she continues to serve as artistic director. An accomplished
professional dancer and choreographer, she has presented ballets such as Snow White,
Sleeping Beauty, Romeo & Juliet, Swan Lake and Cinderella (with the Syracuse Symphony
Orchestra) to capacity houses and four-star reviews. In December 2009, Ms. Rathbun
choreographed A Children’s Nutcracker—a special, child-friendly version of the beloved
classic. Presented every year since, it’s become an annual holiday tradition, and is now
known as simply The Nutcracker.
Kathleen Rathbun, Artistic Director of Ballet & Dance of
Upstate NY, Inc has extensive in-depth experience developing
young dancers' technique, strength and artistry. A former soloist
with Princeton Ballet Society of New Jersey and Dancer's
Ensemble of Syracuse, Ms. Rathbun attended Julliard on
scholarship. She has studied with David Howard, Melissa Hayden,
Finis Young, and other world-renowned teachers. Ms. Rathbun
taught classical ballet at Syracuse University and was the former
director of the Dance Department at Metropolitan School of the
Arts.
