ABOUT
KATE ROSS – CURATOR
I am a London based curator who has worked
extensively in art galleries, museums, arts higher
education and arts administration.
I research and deliver exhibitions, arts events and
programmes.
I am curator for Notting Hill Arts Club and was
Chelsea Arts Club Trust Research Fellow at CHELSEA
space gallery (academic year 2012 - 13) where I
carried out a range of curatorial practice and gallery
management work.
Having successfully developed my own brand
(Curatorial Curiosities) with effective online
marketing I independently curate contemporary arts,
sound exhibitions and live events
with a particular interest in non-gallery spaces.
I have a 1st class BA in Art History & Italian, an MA in
Museum Studies and studied curating at Central Saint
Martins College of Arts and Design, University of the
Arts, London.
I am also a keen arts blogger, user of online social
media and exhibition reviewer.

PROJECTS EXHIBITION & FILM EVENT
DOWNTOWN - SYNESTHESIA II
Notting Hill Arts Club
Event: 8th Aug 2013 Exhibition: Aug - Oct 2013
the exhibition brings together work from artists who explore the urban and
respond to the idea of DOWNTOWN - the core of a city and its creative heart, a
melting pot of diverse communities living life on the street - with specific relation
to the downtown of Kingston, Jamaica.
DOWNTOWN features new collages created by Jenny Gordon, photographs
by Whitty Gordon Projects from their work in Kingston, Jamaica; and a collection
of images illustrating the story of The Four Aces Club in Dalston through flyers,
posters and photographs, collated by Winstan Whitter.
The artists whose work is shown in DOWNTOWN have been influenced by
Jamaican music, the presence of Jamaican culture in London and its vibrant history
which has been brought over from one urban hub to be recreated and reinvented
in another.
Continuing with the SYNESTHESIA series theme of creating a multi-sensory
experience, DOWNTOWN launch night featured a show reel film screening of 10
short films selected through an open call out process, resulting in films by artist
film makers whose work reflects the themes of DOWNTOWN, whether this is
through its urban setting and subject matter or other connected identities.
The DOWNTOWN exhibition was accompanied by music from reggae DJ
Mylon D of Notting Hill Arts Club nights Sweet Memory Sounds and Lick It Back
in keeping with the Jamaica theme of the night.

EXHIBITION & LIVE LAB SOUND EVENT
EN VISAGE - SYNESTHESIA I
Notting Hill Arts Club – Event: 3rd June – Exhibition: June – Aug 2013
The exhibition consisted of large scale 'Naff Graphic' Decals made of vinyl material by
graphic artist Nicky Carvell, mirroring the huge cut outs of musicians and sports people
which still adorn the now stripped out interior of Leisure World. Carvell sees her own cut
outs as signals to an alternate realm, where anything is possible. Indulging on the look of
80's Postmodern record covers, fabric prints and TOTP Sets, these 'signs' envisage uplifting
visions which fizz before the eyes, dynamically flashing, always on the precipice.
3rd June 2013 was the launch night of the new visual arts, sound & moving image series
SYNESTHESIA which aims to create a stimulating cross-sensory environment through the
experience of simultaneous exposure to vibrant visual arts and experimental live lab
sounds as well as short films and projections. SYNESTHESIA I launch night included IKTA
Live (Victoria Trinder & guests) who performed an experimental sound play live lab set &
live music from Horseless Headmen.

EXHIBITIONS
SURFACE
Chelsea Futurespace gallery – Feb - April 2013
a group exhibition that explored a variety of approaches to surface
through painting, textiles, collage, drawing, print and objects, crossing
the boundaries between fine art, craft and design. The
show demonstrated the notion of surface, including pattern,
repetition, texture, patina and material, as well as the deeper
meanings and wider contexts beyond an object’s physical surface.
Each artist’s practice negotiates the nature of physical surface and
conceptual process, connecting the surface appearance of the work
with its meaning.
Chelsea Futurespace was an exemplary collaboration between
Chelsea College of Art and Design, Futurecity arts consultancy, and
the property developer, St James Urban Living, part of the Berkeley
group set within St James’ Grosvenor Waterside development.
BEYOND THE BOOKSHELVES
Old College Library – Chelsea College of Art & Design – May - June 2012
an exhibition showing the work of three artists exploring the themes of text and
books in their work. The exhibition space used was the Old College Library at
Chelsea College of Art & Design which was the purpose built college library for the
Royal Army Medical College in the early 1900s. The exhibition displayed artists’
books and book arts made by book arts artist and painter Julie Caves, objects,
sound and film clips from a live performative soundwork by sound artist and
photographer Tansy Spinks and a specifically built display cabinet with book material
by typographer and designer Phil Jones.
