2 Analog Programmable Controller Wiring Systems
The Bulletin 1492 Analog Programmable Controller Wiring SystemProduct Line consists of Analog Interface Modules (AIFMs) and Pre-wiredCables. These products are designed to aid in the installation ofAllen-Bradley Programmable Controller Analog I/O Modules.
AIFMs and pre-wired cables replace the terminal blocks and up to 50% ofthe point-to-point wiring between the programmable controller and fielddevices. They are available for over 20 different 4-, 6-, 8-, and 16-channel1746 SLC 500, 1756 ControlLogix, and 1771 PLC analog I/O modules.AIFMs allow you to conveniently incorporate additional terminations andovercurrent protection into your I/O circuitry.
Faster Installation TimePre-wired cables have the I/O module terminal block or wiring armalready wired-up on one end and a D-shell connector on the other. Noneed to measure, cut, strip, label, and terminate 20 to 40 wires per I/Omodule. Simply attach the wiring arm or removable terminal block end ofthe cable to the I/O module and attach the D-shell connector end of thecable to the AIFM — and you are ready to wire out to field devices.
Successful System Start-upsThe pre-wired cables are 100% tested for continuity. No more crossedwires and loose connections between the I/O module and the terminalblocks on the DIN rail. With the pre-wired cable and AIFM, yourapplication will have a much higher rate of success at initial start-up.
Simplified TroubleshootingFusible AIFMs provide termination for input modules as well as the abilityto incorporate overcurrent protection for transmitters. On-board 24Vblown fuse indicators help to quickly identify which input had the fault —reducing costly troubleshooting and downtime.
Reduced Panel SpaceAll of the AIFMs have field-side wiring terminals for the I/O channels aswell as extra terminals for the I/O device shield connections. Most inputAIFMs also have extra terminals that are internally commoned togetherand can be used as power busses for input devices. No additional terminalblocks are needed to provide power to the 2-, 3-, and 4-wiretransmitters — saving valuable panel/DIN rail space. Just bring in onepower connection per group to the commoned terminals and terminate theother side of your input devices to the power bus. Complete and compactwiring all on one AIFM!
Quality-Looking PanelThe pre-wired cables and AIFMs organize your wiring and terminationsfor a consistent look to your panel. Pre-printed adhesive labels for theterminal wiring neatly identify field-side connections.

3Analog Programmable Controller Wiring Systems
Pre-wired cables have the I/O module removable terminal block or wiringarm already wired up on one end and a D-shell connector on the other toattach to the AIFM. They are available for over 20 different 4-, 6-, 8-, and16-channel 1746 SLC 500, 1756 ControlLogix, and 1771 PLC analog I/Omodules. All of the pre-wired cables are 100% tested for continuity to helpensure a positive connection.
Cables Fit Your PanelAll of the Bulletin 1492 pre-wired analog cables are offered in fourstandard lengths of 0.5m, 1.0m, 2.5m, and 5.0m to fit a variety ofapplications. Custom length cables (made to order) are also available.
Secure ConnectionsAll cables have a 15- or 25-pin D-shell connector with a slide-lockingmechanism for secure connection to the AIFM.
Maintained Signal IntegrityMost cables utilize twisted pairs and all have an overall shield to aid noiseimmunity of low-level analog signals.
Convenient GroundingMost cables have a prepared drain wire with a ring lug at the I/O moduleend of the cable for convenient grounding of the cable shield to thechassis, if desired. Other cables directly terminate the drain wire to aninternally grounded shield terminal on the I/O module connector.
AIFMs, similar to groups of terminal blocks, are available with either 15-or 25-pin D-shell connectors. The number of field-side wiring terminalsvaries with the type of module — from three to five terminals per I/Ochannel. AIFMs are available as feed-through or fusible to customize thewiring system to your application.
All of the AIFMs have the following features:
Polarized D-shell connector for easyinstallation. Pre-wired cable has matingD-shell connector with slide-lockingmechanism for secure connection.
Pre-printed and blank adhesive markingstrips are provided to identify either theprogrammable controller I/O field-sidewiring terminals or your own applicationrequirements.
High-density field-side wiring terminalsallow more connections in less spaceand accommodate #22-12 AWG wire.
Continuous current rating of 2 amps percircuit supports higher-currentprogrammable controller output modules.
Standard DIN #3 rail mounting for quickinstallation.
UL Component Recognized(File E113724 Guide NRAQ2);UL recognized per Canadian SafetyStandards (cUR)(File E113724 Guide NRAQ2);and CE Approved.

Feed-through Modules
Feed-through AIFMs have three terminals per I/O channel to wire the I/Omodule connections and device shield. The shield terminals are internallybussed together and also tied to the D-shell housing to connect with thecable shield. Some feed-through AIFMs also have special features listedbelow.
The 1492-AIFM4-3, when used with the 1771-OFE2 and -OFE3, providesselectable current limiting resistors. Simply flip a DIP switch to add the250 ohms series impedance into the output circuit. As a troubleshootingaid, test point loops access the circuit on either side of the series resistorand can be used to measure output circuit voltage/current. The limitingresistors are configured on a per channel basis.
The 1492-AIFM6TC-3 for the 1756-IT6I provides on-board cold junctioncompensation to allow thermocouples to be connected “remotely” whilestill correcting for temperature at the termination point. The combinationthermistor and isothermal bar acquire temperature data at the AIFM forthe thermocouple module to adjust the input value.
The 1492-AIFM8-3 has 8 extra terminals commoned together in a powerbus that can be used for Module Common connections or power supplyconnections. The extra terminals and internal jumpering eliminate theneed for some terminal blocks for power connections and jumperaccessories.
Below are examples of the field-side connections available on thefeed-through AIFMs.

Fusible Modules
Fusible AIFMs are available for analog input modules. These AIFMsenable you to fuse the input device power source on the field-side. Thefield-side power source is distributed through individual on-board5 x 20mm fuse clips. The AIFMs have 24V DC blown fuse indicators toreduce the troubleshooting time to locate and replace a blown fuse.Standard fuse holders reside in the AIFM aiding in the removal of the fusewith a fuse puller (fuses are not included). Isolation switch plugs or“dummy fuses” (see Accessories, page 7) are also available to isolate aninput circuit once power is removed. In addition, once the circuit has beenisolated and power restored, the input loop current can be measured in2-wire transmitter applications.
The fusible AIFMs have five terminals per input channel (except theAIFM16-F-3 which has three terminals per channel) to wire the inputmodule connections, device shield, and power connections for 2-, 3-, and4-wire transmitters. The shield terminals are internally bussed together andalso tied to the D-shell housing to connect with the cable shield. There aretwo separate power busses (from 4 to 16 terminals depending on theAIFM) that can be used for +V and DC COM connections and/or ModuleCommon. The extra terminals and internal connections eliminateadditional terminal blocks and jumpers — reducing spare parts inventory, saving panel space, and simplifying installation.
All of the fusible AIFMs have on-board DIP switches to easily connectunused inputs to module common — reducing wiring on the field-side.You no longer need extra jumper wires or comb-style jumpers to properlyterminate unused inputs as recommended on many 1746 and 1771 analoginput modules. Inputs are jumpered via DIP switch on a per channel basis.
6 Analog Programmable Controller Wiring Systems
The 1492-AIFM4I-F-5 and 1492-AIFM4C-F-5 both have test point loopson either side of the fuse clips for easier access and connection ofmetering equipment. Metering equipment can also be attached to the fuseclips on other AIFMs for measuring input loop current.
Below are examples of the field-side connections for 2- and 4-wiretransmitters available on the fusible AIFMs.

Replacement Fuse Holders
The 1492-IFMFH1 fuse holders accommodate a 5 x 20mm fuse or the1492-ISOSW-1 isolation switch plug and reside in the AIFM under normaloperation. All of the fusible 1492 AIFMs come standard with the fuseholders (10 fuse holders with the 1492-AIFM4C-F-5, -AIFM4I-F-5, and-AIFM8-F-5; 20 fuse holders with the 1492-AIFM16-F-3, and-AIFM16-F-5). Replacement fuse holders are available in packages of 20.
Isolation Switch Plugs
The 1492-ISOSW-1 is an isolation switch or “dummy fuse” in a 5 x 20mmfuse form factor. The isolation switch plugs will fit into the 1492-IFMFH1fuse holders. If fusing is not desired on a fusible AIFM, the1492-ISOSW-1 can be used to provide feed-through functionality undernormal operation and isolation switch functionality once power has beenremoved from the circuit. The isolation switch can then be opened formaintenance and troubleshooting. Metering equipment can also be insertedinto a 2-wire transmitter circuit to measure input loop current. The1492-ISOSW-1 isolation switch plugs are available in packages of 4.
Insulated Side Jumpers
The 1492-SJM5-10 is a 10-pole “comb-style” insulated side jumper. Aside cutter can be used to cut the 10-pole jumper into smaller poleassemblies. 25Analog Programmable Controller Wiring Systems
All Bulletin 1492 AIFMs come with an adhesive label card. The label cardprovides the field-side connection descriptions for the programmablecontroller I/O module. The label cards list all of the compatibleI/O modules and their respective wiring descriptions. Depending on theI/O module that is used, the label strip(s) are simply peeled from the labelcard and applied to the field-side terminals on the AIFM. The label stripsbasically copy the wiring descriptions from the I/O module in the chassisdown to the AIFM terminals on the DIN rail.
Fusible AIFMs come with the fuse clips/blown fuse indicatorspre-numbered on the AIFM circuit board. Conversion label strip(s) areprovided on the label card to change the numbering on the AIFM, ifdesired. The conversion labels would be placed directly on the circuitboard of the AIFM. For example, if the fuse clips and blown fuseindicators were pre-numbered “0–3”, a conversion label for “1–4” isprovided.
For AIFMs with extra terminals, pre-printed labels are provided to identifythe shield connections (“SH” or “SHIELD”), module commons(“MODULE COM”, “COM”, or “C”), and power source commons (“+V”,“–V”, “COM”, and “VCOM”).
In addition, if generic numbering of the field-side terminals is desired,“Numeric” labels are provided. Examples: “1–20”, “1–52”, and evens andodds. For write-on identification, the label cards contain blank label strips(for field-side terminals) and rectangular boxes (for the large groupmarking area on each AIFM).
The six different labels are shown actual size on pages 26–31. Thisinformation is helpful for determining field-side wiring layouts prior toinstallation.
