Innovations

An innovative technology is setting trends: Bonding glass parts has become more popu-lar than ever. In the past, however, bonding glass was a time-consuming and delicatejob: from positioning the glass parts precisely to difficult application of the adhesiveand troublesome holding by hand. The result back then: high processing costs, unfavou-rable price/ benefit ratio for the customer, lost orders.

Bohle offers you everything you need for perfect bonding. Not only the know-how fromtwenty years of experience in glass bonding, but also the world's largest range of pro-ducts related to this technology. The advantages for your business are clear: practicallyunlimited design possibilities, for example in the construction of glass furniture, by invi-sible bonds and extraordinarily high bonding strength, very short processing times andlow investment requirements for equipment.

What is glass bonding?

Why bond instead of using screws?

Bonding in general is increasingly gaining importance in all areas of production.

The advantages of glass bonding at a glance:

Distribution of forces over a surface, thus avoiding punctual loads (e.g. by mechanical fixations)No weakening of the glass by drill holes or cut-outs, for exampleCrystal clear bonds, no adverse effects to the appearanceNew, previously impossible design variationsExtremely high bonding strengths in static and dynamic bondsVery short processing and curing timesLow investment in equipment required

Cleaning02

Only with an absolutely clean surface is it possible to achieve optimal bonding results. Therefore, a thorough pre-cleaningand possible pre-treatment of the glass is very important. All bonding surfaces must be dry, clean and grease-free.Following you will find products suitable for surface cleaning. Please remember: Not every commercially available cleaningagent removes the actual types of dirt and contaminants that are on the surfaces of the bonding parts. On the contrary:"anti-spotting" additives form additional layers.

Bohle Special CleanerIdeal for cleaning prior to glass bonding or sealing. The Bohle special cleaner cleansand degreases glass, metal, ceramic and rubber. The special composition of the cleanerensures a very thorough cleaning.

Pre-Treatment03

After cleaning the bonding surfaces, an invisible moisture residue still remains whichcan negatively affect the strength of the bond. To avoid this from happening, the moi-sture must be removed - quickly and reliably with a suitable hot air fan.

PYROSIL® Surface Pre-Treatment

For improved long-term adhesion of challenging bonds

The load-bearing capacity of a bond is measured by its tensile strength, which indicatesat which level of force the bond fails.Optimal effectiveness is achieved when the grea-test possible adhesion of the adhesive is attained. To make sure that bonds of proble-matic surfaces stay securely and durably bonded, e.g. when using glass treated withClearshield or glass subject to continuous stress such as humid rooms, a surface pre-treatment is essential. With the Bohle PYROSIL® technology, a silicate sinter layer is brought onto the glasssurface with the help of a flame burner. In a second step, a coupling agent is applied, which reacts with the silicate sinter layer and subsequently also forms a permanentchemical bond with the adhesive when bonding. Such a pre-treated bond is durablyprotected against moisture infiltration.

Silicate particles connect and forma densely interlaced layer on thesurface for strong adhesion of theadhesive.

The surface is treated with the "pale blue section" of the flame. For uniform activation of the surface, theflame must be waved back and forth over the surface for at least five seconds. Leave the materials to cool, then apply the coupling agent. The cleaning and/or activating result may be negatively affected if the flameis held too close to or too far from the surface. The illustration shows the "pale blue section" of the flame.

Both bonding surfaces must be treated.Only the combination of flame and coupling agent produces the targetedcharacteristics. The coupling agent must be applied thinly and be allowed to flash off sufficiently. All further instructions relevant to glass bonding equally applyto the silicate technology. As far as possible, bonding should be done immediately after pre-treatment.

05 Fixation Devices

For optimum curing of the UV adhesive, it is indispensible to prevent bonding parts fromsliding out of place. This is made much easier by using suitable fixation devices fromthe VERIFIX product range.VERIFIX fixation devices are ideal for precisely positioning and holding glass parts that need to be held in an angled position when bonding. In the past, a second person was often needed to hold the glass parts in position. Withthe VERIFIX technology, one person can easily manage all work steps alone. Based onthe proven VERIBOR suction lifters of Bohle, the specially designed fixation devicessecurely hold the glass parts and allow the precise arrangement of their position in vir-tually any desired angle.Depending on the model and the application requirements, thefine adjustment at corner edges or at marked dimensions can be done by adjustingscrews, eccentric stops, magnets or vacuum fixtures. With the holding devices a defined gap for the application of adhesive can be set and securely fixed. With the VERIFIX series of angle suction holders, the glass panescan be lifted after positioning to allow easy application of adhesive.Other sheet-type material like metal, stone or plastic can also be positioned and heldthis way. When a surface is not suitable for suction cups, magnetic systems can beused: They can fix parts whose surfaces are porous or not airtight.

Application examples for the VERIFIX positioning aids:

Glass furniture, decorative and utility glass objectsBox-shaped constructions - such as aquariums or showcasesGlass constructions in general (e.g. display windows)Installing partitioning walls into glass cabinets and showcasesComplex glass constructions - polygonal objects with virtually any possible angles

Bonding glass is now easier than ever before: With the innovative VERIFIX angle sucti-on holder with priming pump, glass panes are positioned at right angles and held firmlyin no time at all - without electric power and without any interfering hoses! This anglesuction holder with priming pump puts an end to all the complicated, time-consumingpreparatory steps with adhesive tape, wooden blocks or vices. Each unit has two built-in vacuum pumps which can be vented individually via valves, thus allowing assemblyparts to be repositioned without difficulty. The parts can then be bonded with siliconeor UV adhesives. If there is a loss of vacuum, a red ring will show; the connection canbe fixed securely again by simply re-priming the pump. Side dimensions: 73 x 100 and 100 x 100 mm.

VERIFIX Angle Suction Holders with Priming Pump

The VERIFIX pump-activated angle suction holder is positioned on the glass sheet as required and is secured when you pump the first pump cylinder. Sufficient vacuum will have been built up after 3 to 5 pump strokes. The other glass sheet to be bonded is secured the same way with the second pump cylinder. When using thin (low viscosity) adhesive (LV 740), the glass sheets can be secured in their final position before adhesive is applied. After the adhesive has been applied, actuate the venting valves to lower the bonding parts to their final position. By re-pumping the pump cylinder the parts will be fixed in their final position. Silicone adhesives are applied to a pre-defined bonding gap. Here it is sufficient to position and secure the glass parts to the desired gap width. The pump-activated angle suction holder features excellent vacuum stability.

06 Glass Bonding

The importance of glass in combination with other materi-als has grown immensely in areas like shopfitting and thefurniture industry in recent years. Bohle has been intensi-vely involved in glass bonding for many years and todayoffers a total range of products in this field.

UV-curing adhesives

Modern technology has allowed the development of adhe-sives for fields of application that wouldn't have beenthought possible a few years ago. UV-curing adhesivesare suitable for durably bonding many different materialslike glass to glass, glass to metal or glass to stone.Bohle offers a broad spectrum of UV adhesives and, withtheir full range of products, is considered to be the tech-nological leader in the field of glass bonding. In order to obtain maximum strength, the gap betweenbonding parts should be as small as possible in the rangeof 0.04 to 0.5 mm. For optimum results, the glass surfaces

Glass Bonding - A Technology with a Future

to be bonded must be as smooth as possible and the glassedges precisely ground and polished. Light-curing adhesives cure by UVA radiation with a wavelength of 315 to 400 nanometers, but also with wavelengths in the visible range above 400 nanometers. The curing time depends on the thickness and light trans-mission of the glass, size of the bonding area, intensity ofthe lamp and distance of the lamp from the adhesive, etc.and takes between 15 seconds and 5 minutes. Aftercuring the adhesives are transparent or crystal clear. Thespecial properties of the individual adhesives allow bon-ding of different material combinations and various appli-cations. Today, with suitable pre-treatment methods, UV-curing adhesives can even be used in unfavourable condi-tions like bathrooms or similar humid rooms.

UV Adhesive B-678-0 “Lamifix”This UVA and daylight-curing adhesive is crystal clear and has medium viscosity. Itshows good capillary action with glass up to 6 mm thick. Due to its elasticity it is idealfor bonding different material combinations. It has especially high vibration resistancein the bonding joint. Particularly interesting, however, is its suitability for bonding laminated safety glass:The PVB film between laminated glass panes absorbs almost all the UVA radiation.Because this adhesive has been made to also cure by daylight, it reacts with the remainingradiation (above 380nm) and cures completely.Butt-edge bonding is no problem, even with multi-pane laminated glass: the adhesivedoes not affect the PVB film. „Lamifix“ adhesive is ideal for bonding laminated glass to a variety of materials: lami-nated glass, normal glass, wood, stone, metal and many thermoplastics. As not all ther-moplastics can be bonded trouble-free, you should always first do intensive tests withthis material.

UV Adhesive B 682-TThis UV-curing adhesive is transparent and of medium viscosity. This adhesive does nothave capillary properties. Therefore, it must be applied to the bonding surface prior toassembling the parts. Due to the great final strength of this adhesive, it is especiallysuitable for statically and dynamically demanding bonds. Glass-metal bonds work parti-cularly well with this adhesive. It is also suitable for bonding other materials: asidefrom glass and metal, you can alsouse this adhesive to bond stone, wood and differentthermoplastics to glass parts. As not all thermoplastics can be bonded trouble-free, youshould always first do intensive tests with this material. The adhesive B-682-T alsoreacts without UV exposure when using the Bohle UV activator LF (Art. No. BO 52 09365 / BO 52 093 66) (e.g. for coloured glass, metal / metal bonds, etc.). UV Adhesive HV 770The UVA / daylight-curing adhesive Verifix HV 770 has high viscosity and can thereforebridge small fissures up to a maximum of 0.9 mm. Particularly interesting, however, isits suitability for bonding laminated safety glass. The PVB film between laminated glasspanes absorbs almost all the UVA radiation. Because this adhesive has been made toalso cure by daylight, it reacts with the remaining radiation (above 380nm) and curescompletely. When bonding thermoplastics, you should always first do intensive tests,as not all thermoplastics can be bonded trouble-free.After curing the adhesive is superficially dry.Special qualities of this adhesive are its optical clarity, long-lasting resistance to yello-wing and excellent moisture resistance. After final curing the adhesive is hard andbrittle. Be cautious of strong light sources: If the adhesive is exposed to strong light sources, this can result in unwanted pre-curing!

UV Adhesive B 665-0This UV-curing adhesive is crystal clear and has low viscosity. It has very good capillaryproperties that allow it to be applied from the outside and to penetrate by itself intothe gap of pre-assenbled panes. This adhesive is used whenever looks are paramount,e.g. in the construction of showcases, glass furniture, etc. It is especially suitable forbonding glass to glass. The adhesive's low viscosity makes time-consuming reworkingunnecessary, so that it can be applied quickly and most economically. The adhesive B 665-0 is not water resistant and therefore not suitable for humid roomsor outdoor use. After curing, it is very hard and relatively brittle, i.e. not very elastic. This characteristic must be considered when constructing glass objects.

» A variety of applications arepossible with silicone adhesives «

General Information:Please use a measuring cup made from plastic (as included)or glass for preparing VERIFIX two-component silicone and aglass rod for stirring. Avoid bringing into contact with metals, alkaline materialsand rubber (also rubber gloves), as this might cause curingproblems for the VERIFIX two-component silicone. There are two products to choose from, depending on theapplication: the classic version with adhesion promoter orthe primer-free variant for gluing parts of the same size. If you are working with the primer-free version, please skipthe irrelevant parts of these instructions for use. The recommended processing temperature is approx. 18°-25°C.The pot life is approx. 2 hours.Lower temperatures decelerate the curing process, highertemperatures accelerate it. If you wish to join other materials such as stainless steel orstone, for example, with the glass, please make sure that theVERIFIX two-component silicone sets completely at the inter-faces by previous tests.

Instructions for Using VERIFIX 2K/ 2K-P, BO 55 005 10, BO 55 005 11

Bohle has developed this two-component silicone adhesivespecifically for joining glass surfaces. The product ideallylends itself to application on mouth-blown and flashed glass, rolled stained glass or fusing glass, and of course also forperfectly transparent, bubble-free float glass joints. All-overgluing is possible on support plates such as door panels, all-glass doors or room dividers, for example, as is the mountingof individual applications.VERIFIX two-component silicone polymerizes into an elastic,non-ageing, weather- and UV-resistant elastomer withoutshrinking, regardless of the layer’s thickness.

Application:If possible process VERIFIX two-component silicone in adust-free room, using lint-free cleaning cloths (e. g. BO 5141604) for preliminary cleaning.1. Clean the surfaces to be glued with Bohle special cleaner(BO 5107910).2. Apply the adhesion promoter to both surfaces and distribute evenly (a saturated cotton pad is suitable). Pleasenote: VERIFIX two-component silicone will only adherewhere the adhesion promoter has been applied! The primer-free version generally adheres without adhesionpromoter!3. Mix the required amount of VERIFIX two-component silicone in a 1:1 ratio.Exact compliance with the markings of the measuring cup isadequate, weighing on digital scales is not required.Stir the two components for approximately 5 minutes untilthe streaks in the material disappear. After the stirring is completed, VERIFIX two-component sili-cone can be poured directly onto one of the surfaces to bejoined. The adhesion promoter does not require flashing offfor any longer period of time. 4. Wait approximately 15-30 minutes until the bubbles havecompletely escaped from the VERIFIX two-component silicone. The thicker the layer is, the longer the air bubbleswill take to escape. This process can be supported by flashing off with cold air. 5. Then place the other part to be joined (or other parts to bejoined) in the applied VERIFIX two-component silicone andsecure it (or them) against slipping.6. VERIFIX two-component silicone will set solidly in approximately 12 hours (vertical stress-free storage is possible from this point in time) and be completely curedafter approximately 72 hours. The setting process can beaccelerated by higher temperatures.

Dispensing Aids for UV Adhesives

When regularly working with UV adhesives, applying the correct amount of adhesive isespecially important, not only for the durability of the bond, but also for cost reduction. The VERIFIX dispensing system 900E oofers the right solution for all requirements.Especially for industrial applications of bonding technology, the use of dispensing unitsis essential.

The manual dispensing system is the ideal aid when bonding small parts or when lowproduction numbers are involved. An application needle with the appropriate diameterfor the adhesive type is mounted to the bottle of adhesive by means of an adaptor. Thebottle cap stays clean and can be re-used to close the bottle. Six different applicationneedles are available for clean and economic application of the adhesive, ensuring thatthe optimal quantity is metered according to the viscosity of the adhesive. Large diame-ter needles can be used both for thick (high viscosity) adhesives or for applying largeramounts of thin (low viscosity) adhesives. The application needles not only fit on thebottles of adhesive, but are also suitable for the VERIFIX dispensing units.

To cure UV adhesives, UVA lamps emitting wave lengthsin the range of 315 - 400 nm are required. Bohle offers anespecially comprehensive selection of models to meet anyapplication requirements. Depending on the work surroun-dings, there are some criteria which should be consideredin order to choose the appropriate lamp.

However, the following applies to all UVA hand lamps:As these lamps can become quite hot (the filter screenscan become approx. 300°C hot), they should be placed onto a non-flammable surface, e.g. a light-absorbing felt pad, when putting the lamp aside.Never set the UVA hand lamp face down on the filter screen. This can cause a heat build-up that can destroy the lamp. With fluorescent tube lamps these high temperatures do not occur! UVA lamps may only be used with intact filter screens.Otherwise skin and eyes may get harmed!

For especially quick curing while achieving maximumstrength, UVA hand lamps with high efficiency should beused, e.g. BO 52 094 04. These lamps can pre-cure smallbonding surfaces - dependent on the absorption of thebonded parts, distance from the lamp, etc. - within

approx. 10 seconds and reach final curing after approx. 90seconds. These lamps are used for professional applicati-ons. You should always remember, however, that theseUVA hand lamps are intended for smaller bonding dimen-sions (e.g. bonding metal parts).

When longer or larger surfaces need to be bonded, UVAtube lamps should be used to ensure tension-free curingof the adhesive. Too much tension in the bond can resultin damage to the bond or glass breakage. With UVA tubelamps pre-curing takes about 30 seconds and final curingabout 3-5 minutes. Due to the separate transformer, these UVA lamps areespecially light-weight and easy to handle. A separatestand support is optionally available and allows precisepositioning - your hands are free to do other work. Idealfor the production of glass showcases or large glass furni-ture.

All Bohle UV lamps are equipped with UV filter screens toprevent damage to eyes or skin. On recommendation ofthe Trade Association, however, you should still wear suit-able protective glasses (e.g. BO. 50 076 10) and suitableprotective gloves for your own safety.

UVA Fluorescent Tube Lamps

Especially when bonding showcases, glass furniture, etc.,longer bonding distances are involved which cannot becured tension-free with common UV lamps because thelamp has to be moved back and forth over the length ofthe bonding surface. To achieve tension-free curing, choose a tube that is as long as the bonding edge.

BO 52 094 76 UVA LampUVA Star “Long Light XL”This UV lamp with an effective work length of 1760mm has been developed for professional require-ments and cures longer bonding distances tension-free in a relatively short time (depending on adhesi-ve layer thickness and UVA transmittance of thebonding parts, approx. 30 seconds to pre-cure thebond and 3 to 4 minutes to achieve final strength). The supporting stand allows the reflector of thelamp to be turned freely. Without the stand, theUVA lamp is simply turned around when not in useto avoid having to turn it on and off all the time.Includes electronic transformer, allowing its use inthe USA and Japan as well

BO 52 060 60 CRISTALLO-FIX Glass/Glass HingeWith the CRISTALLO FIX, Bohle has developed a hinge which allows glass doors to beattached to glass cabinets by bonding and which can also be adjusted in three dimensi-ons. The technically sophisticated product with an opening angle of 125° is equippedwith a damper with spring closing mechanism and is equally suitable for inset or over-lay doors. Instead of a conventional cross plate mounting, this new product uses a cabi-net bonding plate with snap-on function which was especially deveoped for this purpo-se. Inserial production, however, the cycle time often suffered from the use of silication tech-nology because until now the cartridges had to be exchanged frequently. Now you canshorten your cycle times with the Pyrosil® applicator GVE 2. With two large Pyrosil®

cartridges, a firing period of approx. 75 minutes per cartridge can be achieved (depen-ding on the burner). Enough for one shift without having to replace cartridges. And withall the benefits that Pyrosil® surface pre-treatment can offer you.

Instructions for Use for Glass Bonding with UV-Curing Adhesives1. Material Selection (check suitability of adhesive):The choice of glass you plan to use and the adhesive appropriate for that glass (see item 3 below) results in different bondstrengths. Technical data about strength, etc. can be found on page 20.All specifications refer to transparent, UVA light-permeable float glass. Clear float glass, mirrors (front side), temperedglass and smooth, flat wired glass can be bonded without problems. Special glass may lead to lower strength values orcannot be bonded at all. Problematic is all structured glass like patterned glass, wired glass, sandblasted or satinisedglass. The UVA light permeability depends on the glass thickness and colour intensity of the glass. Please note: Glass with high UV absorption like laminated glass or coloured glass cannot be bonded with common UVadhesives. For these applications, only the highly sensitive Bohle adhesives VERIFIX HV 770 or "Lamifix“ are suitable.Additional information: The smoother the bonding surface and the thinner the layer of adhesive (observe minimum layerthickness), the stronger and more resilient the bond will be. For bonding metal to glass it has been determined by comprehensive series of tests that stainless steel is an especiallysuitable material.

2. Preparing the Bonding Surfaces2.1. Cleaning

Bonding surfaces must be absolutely clean, free of grease and dry (free of separating agents).Use appropriate cleaners when UV bonding (without tensides or separating agents).Common glass cleaners are not suitable in most cases.Recommended: Bohle specil cleaner for glass bonding Art. No. BO 51 079 10

2.2. WarmingAdhesive as well as parts to be bonded must be at room temperature. In order to obtain a durably stable bond, it is essential to heat parts prior to bonding in order to remove any (possibly not

visible) condensation. All bonding parts must be slowly and evenly heated to avoid any tension build-up in the later bond.Temperature: approx. 30°C above room temperatureUse hot air unit or blow dryer.

Disregarding any of these recommendations may lead to considerable loss of strength, in some cases not immediately noti-ceable. 2.3. Pyrosil® Surface Pre-Treatment

The additional pre-treatment of problematic surfaces with the PYROSIL®-technology results in durably higher adhesion as well as better resistance to moisture infiltration of the bond. This is especially important for high load-bearing bonds.

3. Choosing the Right AdhesiveDepending on the requirements of the bonding materials, applicable loads as well as intneded use of the finished product, different Bohle adhesives are available for your tests. Special information: Glass/metal bonds: For bonds subject to dynamic stress, only Bohle UV adhesive B-682-T or VERIFIX MV 760 should beused.Glass/glass bonds: When planning and building all-glass constructions, you should always strive for a "closed" (i.e. self-stabilising) construction in order to obtain the highest possible stability (see illustrations). Elastic adhesives such as B-678-

4. Positioning AidsFor optimum curing of the UV adhesive, it is indispensible to prevent bonding parts from sliding out of place. This is mademuch easier by using suitable fixation devices from the VERIFIX product range. Your technical advisor can give you detailedinformation.

5. Joining the Parts / Applying the AdhesiveBefore applying the adhesive, it is recommended to check if bonding parts fit in their intended position. This is best doneby first building a complete trial construction of the object without bonding (using positioning devices). The adhesive should be applied within 5 minutes after the parts have been heated; should a longer period have passed, the parts should be heated again.Bonding surfaces should preferably be in a horizontal position when adhesive is applied, vertical application may lead to problems. A layer of too much adhesive reduces the strength of the bond and increases the workload of removing excess adhesive.Precise and economic application of the adhesive can be achieved by using dispensing systems and application needles.

5.1 Applying the adhesive BEFORE joining the parts:Medium / high viscosity adhesive (VERIFIX MV 760, VERIFIX HV 770 and B-682-T) is always applied in a wiggly patternbefore parts are joined. When bonding surfaces, the adhesive is always applied before parts are joined.

When bonding horizontally, the bonding parts should be evenly and carefully lowered to avoid trapping any air bubbles. The weight of the bonding parts is sufficient to evenly spread the adhesive over the entire bonding surface.

5.2 Applying the adhesive AFTER joining the parts:Low viscosity adhesive (VERIFIX LV 740 and B-665-0) suses capillary action to seep into the bondline gap by itself. Therefore, the bonding parts can be joined in their final position before the adhesive is applied.

Do not work on several parts at the same time, but build the object one step at a time.To achieve an optimum distribution of adhesive over the entire bonding surface, the parts should be slightly lifted and lowered again (increasing and decreasing the bondline gap) before curing.

Open Construction Closed Construction

0 and B-690-0 are only suitable for "closed" constructions. Should an "open" construction be expressly desired for designreasons or if a "closed" construction is not possible for other reasons, only adhesives VERIFIX LV 740, B-665-0, VERIFIX HV770, VERIFIX MV 760 or B-682-T must be used.

6. Curing (Exposure to UV Light)The exposure to UV light is done in 2 steps:1. By pre-curing a working strength (approx. 30% of the final strength) is achieved. This allows excess adhesive outside thebonding surface to be removed easily2. After final curing (approx. 24 hours undisturbed), the bond is fully functional and can be put under load.

Use suitable UV lamp: The lamp should not be shorter /smaller than the bonding edge to avoid build-up of tensions dueto uneven curing.

Position lamp as close as possible to the bonding surface during curing.Never move parts during curing process and do not expose to vibrations (use fixation aids).Pre-cure by exposing from at least 10 seconds to approx. 2 minutes, depending on the type of lamp.Remove any positioning devices and clean the object of any adhesive residues (special cleaner, glass scraper, steel wool fineness 00).End-curing the bond: expose from at least 60 seconds to approx. 5 minutes, depending on the type of lamp.Exposing the bond for a longer time has no negative or positive effects on the bond. All Bohle UV lamps are equipped with UV filters to avoid any damage to eyes, skin, etc.For your own safety, however, you should use additional suitable protection, e.g. Art. No. BO 50 076 10 safety glasses with UV filter and BO 50 075 10 disposable gloves.

(The use of appropriate protection when working with UV lamps is recommended by the Trade Association.)

7. Test bondingIf you are uncertain of ideal bonding conditions, always do trial bonds:

Bond parts according to above instructions.Test strength of the bond by subjecting it to stresses exceeding those it would normally suffer, e.g. impacts, tilting or sudden movements. If necessary, use tools (e.g. pliers, etc.)To determine the load limit, subject the bonded object to increasing loads until parts disconnect or break, if possible. If you have problems or doubts about specific bonding conditions or any other questions, please feel free to contact Bohle's experienced staff!
