Aim and objectives of the project

    Group:

Our project is to create an animation, which can introduce the brain to young

children. Our animation includes two main characters that are very different from each

other. One is good and one is bad; Good people against Bad guy.

We will introduce the common function of a brain during animation. Moreover, we

will explain the brain can also control emotion.

In our animation, there should be lots of action scenes that other animation under

    this project might not have.

    Individual:

    Suzan

I am the director of this project; I focus on planning the story and doing sketches of

storyboard. For me, I think the story structure is very important for our project. As

we need to make a one-minute long animation, with an ingenious story is the soul of

our animation. As in about one minute, we need to tell a story with opening,

development and funny ending. It means I want to tell a story with simple and

interesting message, such as Jack and Marcel. Therefore, the story line should be

short and meaningful, which use animation of two guys fight to tell how the brain

    works.

As the rhythm of our animation should be fast, I aimed at pay attention of storydevelopment. From the review studies, I find that nowadays, young children would

like seeing the fight between good person and bad guy. It is because children always

love the hero-liked character. So that we would like to use this point to appeal those

target audiences, then show them what we actually need to tell---about the brain. In

order to make young children interested in studying human biology. I decide to make

the story simple and easy to read. It means the story will be told directly, at the same

time, I will insert some impressive biology knowledge through the animation.

    Yeung

For the over all style of our animation, there should be a clean city with a lot of

building like the scene in Ultraman Tiga ().

I think if the characters are like those in South Park will be easier for us to handle, as

  • 8/9/2019 Kat Group 2 Proposal

    4/21

I believe there should be a lot of detailed movement between the two robots when

they have to fit the brain and the body.

I came up an idea of two robot fighting scene. I think there should a lot of electric

device sound effect in our animation. Some building destruction sound effect also.

    Clara

Since my key role is animation director, the direction I am going to take up is to

design the animation style. I need to design the movement of every character. As this

animation is p roduce for children who aged between 8 and 12, I want to design the

character more active. For example, when the characters talk to another p erson, I

would produce some gestures for them. It is because there are research told us that

people would more interest in some animation that have more movement.

Beside the animation style, I am going to take up the story of the animation as my

support role is editor. We want to tell other people that the brain controls our body,

emotion and our feeling etc. Therefore, the direction of our story is through the Doctor

put the brain into the robots mid to tell people that how the brain control the bodywork, emotion and feeling.

    Gloria

My key role is character designer and my supporting role is animation.

In the summer project, I will try my best to do it. That's because we should be

    familiar with this software.

Since semester one, we have learnt it. We have used it for making animation and games.

Thus, I think we can do it well. But, the working time is not very long. We should

    make a complete work first.

    Target audience and profile characteristics

Our target audience age from six to eight students who are probably study ing

primary one. They love watching cartoon nowadays, especially the good guys against

bad guys cartoon like Pleasant Goat and Big Big Wolf. They would laugh when the

bad guys get hurt by their own evil plans.

Young children would not be interested in reading a lot of information from an

animation. They would forget the specific word from a book but they would easily to

tell what the characters names are. For example, they can remember every character

name from a cartoon called Pokmon.

Summary of research and review studies

    Story and script (Suzan)

I studied those relevant existing works, including the followings:

Name of animation Duration Relevant parts

Jack and Marcel episode16 00:52 Story structure

Super black cat()episode8 2/3 08:57 Robots joints movement

Pokmon (rocket team) N/A Story, characters(bad guy)

Super Robot 28 Sigla iniziale 01:18 Fight of robots

Astro boy 01:16 Action of robots

From the studies of different kinds of animations, I find that nowadays, in most

stories there are bad guys or some disgusting characters. As our target audiences aged 6

to 8 children, perhaps they love to watch the story of fight between two rivals the

good one and the villain. For example, in Pokmon, the bad guy rocket team always

app ear to be the villain, and then actually harm themselves in the end. Therefore,

those stories with villains seem can appeal to our target audiences.

Those stories usually told through the experience of the main characters.

    Scene

Like the Ultraman Tiga, two grant men fighting in a city. Except we change the real

    building into graphic.

    Transformation

I watched a lot of animations that include some transformation of few objects. This

kind of transformation is rather suitable for our combination of brain robots. I noticed

that when they are combining different p arts of object their background does not like a

realistic scene. There are just some unreal transitional backgrounds for combination. Inour animation, we will follow this traditional.

    Graphic style

The above video is an example of our animations sty le. Since we think this sty le is

easier to handle. Characters without any outline, we can manipulate different parts of

  • 8/9/2019 Kat Group 2 Proposal

    the characters easily.

    Character design (Clara)

The animation that I have found is Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Oh Tootles Meeska

Mooska Mouskatools. The action is like talking with the audience. For example,

Mickey Mouse would ask the audience some question and ask them to say Oh

Tootles. Also, the action of this animation is very smooth since the character would

have different motion in every scene. For example, the character would have eye

blinks and gesture in their action.

For the transitions of the animation, it would shift to another scene suddenly. For

example, after Mickey Mouse, Goofy and Donald Duck say Oh Tootles together, it

suddenly change to another scene that show Mickey Mouse and Pluto are telling the

audience they are going to the Mousekatools.

In this animation, it always use pan to tell us that Mickeys action that he is very

active and happy. Also, when the character is going to speak or shout, it use zoom in

and out to show its action. It seems more interesting and active.

There are some effects on this animation. For example, when it changes to another

scene, it would use premiere to make an effect on it. For the test, the animation hasany gesture so that the test in the animation would be arm up and head nods down and

    up etc.

Another animation that I have found is called Powerpuff Girls movie- got milk

commercial. The action of this animation is like making chocolate milk. Although the

characters in the animation use another method to make the chocolate milk, we can

    understand what they are doing.

The transition of this animation is understandable. It can show that the characters are

making chocolate milk. Then they get a mission so they drink the chocolate milk

quickly. After that the fly to another place and find out then the mission is to help the

doctor make a cup of chocolate milk.

For the camera movements, this animation have used pan to tell the people that the

three main characters are making chocolate milk together. Then, it use zoom out to

show that they have a mission when they making the chocolate milk.

    Animation style (Gloria)

    Character design

Two robots are characters. One is red in color and another one is grey in color.

    Their proportions are like human.

The red one robot loses a hand and the grey one steals it use be his hand. They fight

    with each other.

Their movement is not very smooth because they are robots. The grey one is like

    craftier than the red one.

They hit each other by their hand and leg. At the beginning, the grey robot steals the

red hand and installs it to be his hand .It can be notice that he is crafty.

We can find their characteristic within the process of fighting.

Analysis of context and scopeEvaluate our resources

    Background:

As the p roject aims to create a one-minute 2D flash animation for young children.

For each of our teammates knows how to use flash, while we all had experiences of

flash application. In fact, three of our teammates had taken the 2D computer

animation course; and they experienced how to produce a 15 seconds 2D animation

through the p revious project. Also others are good at drawing, colour sense and

    technical supports.

    Effective and High Efficiency:

In our team, we have four teammates, as a functional team, we have well planned

working schedule and manpower allocation. It means that everyone have a key role

according to their ability, there are Director, Art Director, Character Designer and

Animation Director. In addition, we all have the software that used for different

production stages, and we know how to use them. Through sharing among our

teammates, we not only improve our skills, but also make our product become

    perfect.

Furthermore, there are different stages included pre-production, production and

administration. In the very beginning, we need to discuss a lot, everyone have the right

and chance to present his/her ideas. According to the manpower allocation, when enter

to the production stage, each teammate need to make contributions refer to their key

role. Therefore we can keep balance of workload for each teammate. It means nobody

will take all the work and nobody will idle through the production stage.

    Conclusion

In fact, we are group of four, planning to do something that we can handle well in our

levels. It shows that, in a short period of time we cant make something like Disney

animation movie, but we can still make our product good enough for our client. We

have well prepared for our project; we believe that finish the task with high quality

product and make things completed is very important.

Approach and sketches of creative design solution

The story is about a professor called Doctor X, who produces a Robot N to destroy

the earth. He has put a brain in the robots mind. However, some parts of this robot's

brain are missing. On the other side, Doctor Xs brother Doctor Y want to stop him so

Doctor Y produce another robot called Robot M. Robot M has a complete brain so

that it can control it body, emotion and feeling.

Since some part of Robot Ns brain has missing, it cannot control the movement and

emotion itself. On the contrast, Robot M has a complete brain system. Therefore,

Robot M wins Robot N. At the end of the story, the bad guy will have punishment.

Through the fight between two robots, we will introduce some knowledge of brain in

    the story.

Doctor Y is interest in p hysical knowledge so that he can produce a complete brain for

    Robot M.

Since he is a Doctor, Doctor Y wears white clothes. Also Doctor is kind and friendly

so he always has a smile on his face. His like blue color therefore he always wear blue

Doctor do not interest in physical knowledge. He produce Robot N is just want the

robot help him to destroy. Thus, Robot N does not have a complete brain.

Since he is a Doctor, he always wears white clothes. He looks unfriendly because he

hates the world very much. As he likes purple, he always wear purple jean.

Doctor Y produces it. It is kind and helpful. It wants to protect the earth so that he is

going to fight with Robot N.

As Doctor Y like blue color, he designs Robot M blue in the color. Also, it has its own

Understanding that we cant work together with all teammates for 24 hours per

day, we share each others works through upload the files online. For example,

we can upload files through E-mail account, the Blogger and the link from my

Web. So that we can get the updated files and make changes immediately.

Also our teammate YEUNG created an account of XT Host which we can

upload a file on it to make it become a link and post to our Blogger, in order to

let all teammates and the client (tutor) know.

    Work schedule

Week one: study existing works and summarize what you have found

Week two: development of story, design character and animation style tests.

Week three: Confirm the idea of each part and draw the storyboard

Week four: draw the background and animatic line test of those characters

Week five: draw all of the items and start to make the animation

Week six: make the animation and finalize it

We plan that we will group together twice a week. We decide we hold it on Monday

and Friday representatively. Also, we plan to start the meeting at 12:30 pm.

On Monday, it is the time for us to have our group work. And we have another

    meeting for discussion on Friday.

    Detail of technical approach

We decide to use Photoshop, AI and Flash for different production stages.

At the beginning stage, we may use Photoshop, AI to draw our characters, object and

  • 8/9/2019 Kat Group 2 Proposal

    18/21

    etc.

Then, we use import those items into Flash and link them to be animation.

We have two kinds of resolution of the animation. They are HD (1280*960) and SD

    (720*576).

It is 30 Frame per second.

Also, the image format is Ai and PNG. If the image is the background, it calls BG.

Props are called PROP and characters are called CH. We decide to use number to order

    it well.

e.g. a image which is the background of scene 1 is a bathroom

    Thus, it is called BG01_bathroom

If the file revises, the file name will change to BG01_bathroomR.

"R" is added to the end of the file name. R1, R2, R3...to mention but a few.
