The Kats had a big night last night in facing a very solid Lafayette Jeff squad in a situation where

both teams were hungry and playing for the #2 seed in the West. Kokomo would play solid

tennis, clenching the #2 seed with a 3-2 win. Though a 3-2, it nearly ended in a 4-1 victory.

Jeff boasted a very solid and consistent singles squad. This didn’t faze Jon Callane as he came

away with a 6-0, 6-0 win at #1. Jon took care of business in about 30 minutes and helped set the

tone for the rest of the night.

Next to strike was the #1 doubles team of Drew Swain and Miki Sanchez. These guys

dominated from start to finish in their 6-3, 6-1 win.

The #2 doubles team of Jacob Walker and Brandon Hansen sealed the deal for the Kats in their 6-

1, 6-4 win. These guys kept their foot on the gas and withstood a late push from their opponents.

Taylor Duncan also had a great night with a very tough match. Taylor’s opponent got hotter and

hotter as the match progressed. Taylor took the first set by the score of 6-2, and lost the second in

a very competitive tie break by the score of 7-6 (7-5). Because the team match was already

decided, a super tie break was played in lieu of the third set. This was a little disheartening to

Taylor as he loves to go the distance and his fitness is such a priority. The tie break option is the

expected and considerate thing to do when the match is determined, the night is late, and the other

team has a long trip ahead of them. The super breaker wouldn’t disappoint as both guys knocked

each other back and forth fighting off match points. In the end Taylor came up just shy in a 12-

10 battle, but I am very proud of how he battled and competed. Way to go Taylor!

At #3 singles, Ty Lauderbaugh came off of an excellent weekend of high level play, but tonight

just wasn’t his night. His opponent played great, and Ty just couldn’t get it going. Ty did make

adjustments and battled to the end.

The JV dropped a heartbreaker last night losing many close matches in a 6-5 loss. Winners

included Jayleb Walsh in singles and the doubles teams of Ari Leger/C.J. Washburn, Austin

Ferraro/Karson Parrott, Drake Hester/ Eric Swain and Linkin Brock/Alan Dockemeyer.

Both the varsity and JV move to 10-5 on the season and travel to face a strong Lapel team

tonight.

Go Kats!!!

The Lady Kats soccer squad hosted Logansport

last night and took a 5-1 loss.

Though the score had a gap, the game didn't

reflect the gap by any means. With a very

action packed goal-to-goal game it was just the

Berries finding the back of the net more this

time is all. The Kokomo Kats had more time

with the ball in offense than Logansport

recorded and also out drove Logan down the

field. We saw some great increases in our game

where we have put a lot of focus in lately.

We saw the girls playing considerably more

one-versus-one and keeping the ball, as

opposed to rushing the ball away. We saw great

one-versus-one drives into attack. The Lady

Kats soccer squad looked to be on the better

end of a great improvement coming.

The night’s lone Kats goal was scored by

Whitney Pierce, while freshman Keeper

Madison Carpenter had five saves in net.

After four straight games at Walter Cross Field, the Kokomo Wildkats take their first road trip of

the year to Scheumann Stadium in Lafayette to take on the Jefferson Bronchos Friday night.

Lafayette Jeff is 4-0 this season, 2-0 in the North Central Conference.

Kokomo is 2-2 overall, 1-1 in the NCC.

Friday’s game will be Jeff’s fourth game at home. Their lone road game came at Ellison Stadium

at McCutcheon High School, meaning the Bronchos have not left the county yet through five

weeks of the high school football season.

Lafayette Jeff is ranked 5th this week in Class 6A by both the Associated Press and the Coaches

Association poll.

The Bronchos average 48.75 points per game through their first four games, making Jeff the tenth

best team offensively in the state. The Bronchos are the second highest scoring team in Class 6A,

trailing only Carroll (Allen County), which has a 54.5 offensive norm.

Jefferson’s defensive average is 24.75.

Jeff’s average margin of victory, 24.0 points per game, ranks 43rd best in Indiana. The 24-point

margin of victory is the fifth best in Class 6A.

Kokomo averages 21.75 points per game offensively and 20.5 on defense.

Jeff has scored at least 27 points in each of their four games with a high of 77 in last week’s

shootout with Harrison.

Kokomo has put over 20 points on the board twice this season, and both have resulted in Wildkat

wins.

Lafayette Jeff is one of two NCC schools that play in Class 6A. Arsenal Tech is the other.

Playing in Class 5A are the Wildkats, along with Harrison, McCutcheon, and Anderson, while

Marion, Muncie Central, Richmond, and Logansport are all 4A schools in football.

Jeff plays one school in Class 6A, three in Class 5A, one in Class 3A, and their last four games of

the regular season come against Class 4A schools.

Kokomo’s schedule includes two teams from Class 6A, three from 5A, and four from Class 4A.

Page 6: Kat Chatter - Amazon Web Services

The Sagarin Ratings have Jeff with the 40th toughest schedule in the state, while Kokomo’s is

ranked 137th.

The Sagarin Ratings have the Bronchos as the best team in the North Central Conference, and the

Wildkats come in as the fourth best.

Jefferson is ranked as the 12th best team in the state, according to the Sagarins, and the 10th best

in Class 6A. Kokomo is the 142nd best overall and 24th best in Class 5A.

Kokomo and Jeff have one common opponent thus far…McCutcheon. Both defeated the

Mavericks; however the Bronchos shutout the Mavs 49-0 compared to Kokomo’s 28-23 victory.

Kokomo’s four opponents have combined for a 6-10 record through the first four weeks of the

season, while Jeff’s foes have a 5-11 mark.

The Wildkats two wins this season have come against teams with a combined record of 0-8.

Both Plymouth and McCutcheon are winless in four games.

Pat Shanley is in his fifth season as the Broncho head coach and will bring an excellent 38-8

record (a .826 winning percentage) into Friday’s game. Shanley is a 2003 grad of Rensselaer

Central High School and a 2007 grad of Purdue University. He has served as an assistant

football coach at Rensselaer, Mount Vernon, Ben Davis, and Jeff. Shanley was promoted from

the Bronchos Offensive Coordinator to the head coach in 2016, replacing Brian Moore who spent

one season at Jeff. Shanley is 3-1 in games against Kokomo and 1-1 in games against the Kats at

Scheumann Stadium.

Austin Colby is 2-2 in his first year at KHS. A graduate of Kokomo and Ball State, Colby is 18-

8 overall in his three seasons as a head coach. He replaced Richard Benberry as the Kats head

coach.

Legend has it that the Broncho nickname came from an ill-advised seamstress around 1916. The

school ordered new uniforms, which came with the “H” added into Bronco. Whether Lafayette

Jeff couldn’t afford another set of uniforms, or they didn’t want to embarrass the seamstress, the

name on the uniforms (and the nickname) stuck.

Bronchos are also the nickname for Holly (MI) High School, Bethany (OK) High School, and

Odessa (OK) High, as well as the University of Central Oklahoma.

John Harrell’s website predicts a 45-17 Jeff victory.

KHS Student-Athlete of the Week

MYLES LENOIR Myles, a senior on the KHS football team, helped the Wildkats to a 28-

23 win over McCutcheon. The linebacker recorded 13 tackles on the

night, a career high for him and the best effort by a Kokomo defender

since Noah Hurlock had 14 in the 2017 season.
