INFERENCE
• As part of the metro system development
in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, Norwegian
architecture studio Snohetta has
designed the Qasr Al Hokm Downtown
station as a sustainable space of urban
nature.
• a large stainless steel bowl-shaped
canopy is the most characteristic of
these elements. rising above the plaza
RIYADH METRO STATION
CANOPY
• it provides shade where there is none, while reflecting and channeling light deep underground with its reflective
surface
•. a central oculus allows light air and water to enter the subterranean space where a garden flourishes in
the center
•its surfaces control light entering the station and are capable of collecting solar light energy using fiber optics.
RIYADH METRO STATION
• attempt to make the public consciousof the importance of natural resources in its desert environment, by following sustainable technologies
• caught in its reflection, citizens are called by the canopy to gather in the plaza, while the muezzin serenades the religious to worship.
• linking these elements materially and spatially, palm trees and irrigation channels create a human scale, and provide directionality toward mecca;
• limestone walls define the mosque at the edge of the site, and unify it with the surface of ground plane, as the wooden screen-like walls
• Opens to the house of worship to the north and east. the harmony of the various programs emphasizes the project’s consciousness of its environment,
• meeting the social demand for a vibrant space for public gathering, interaction, and worship.
• Lime stone cladded walls• Palm trees giving a human scale• Adjoining mosque give the space a great significance
• its surfaces control light entering the station and are capable of collecting solar light energy using fiber optics.
• Atrium of the underground metro station

OBSERVATION• It respects the needs and aspirations of the community that lives and works in the vicinity :
heavy inflow of tourists and people from surrounding areas during the weekends but not so much during the week days. Therefore a Cinema Hall was built next to Swabhumi with direct connectivity for spill overs.
• with the advent of the mall culture, the heritage plaza had seen a gradual dwindling of footfall. "Over the last eight years, there has been a 30% decline in the number of visitors.
• It couldnot form a part of daily life due to lack of uses such as daily shopping needs, frequent in its vicinity,
• It caters to the Upper Middle and HigherIncome Groups : is not inclusive .It doesnot cater to wide range of budgets
• It was built on a hillock giving it contours for elaborate design. But people complain about the climb being stressful.
• The space is pedestrian friendly but not barrier free• One of the objectives behind Swabhumi was to reflect the richness of our architectural forms. Forms
and styles from different parts of the country have been incorporated into the design
