Day 11 (06 May 2015)

Medical ClinicsMedical Team One organized a clinic at Karkite village of Kathmandu district. The clinic treated 110 patients most of whom had diarrhea, since the spring water they had been drinking was contaminated after the earthquake. Many local people also had injures resulting from the quake. Team Two organized a clinic in Bageshwori, Bhaktapur, one of the worst affected areas. A total of 101 patients received medical care. Most patients had diarrhea, mosquito bites, cough and cold due to fluctuating weather and lack of proper shelter.

A medical team from Shechen Monastery treated 90 patients in very remote Sabdobato in Phikuri VDC of Sindulpalchok district. This is one of the worst affected districts, and all the houses have been completely demolished by the earthquake. Most patients had severe cuts and wounds resulting from the quake.

Earthquake Relief DistributionKaruna-Shechen organized earthquake relief distribution in Kartike village of ward no. 6 in Kathmandu district. Shechen Monastery organized relief distribution in Sangbari for ward no. 2 of Sangbari VDC in Sindhupalchok.Details:Affected Houses: 32Population Relief Provided: 192Relief Materials Distributed: 32 tarpaulin tents, 32 sacks of rice (960 kg), 640 kg of beaten rice, 2 boxes of biscuits and 200 packs of ORS.

Advanced First-Aid TrainingShechen Clinic, in partnership with NADEM, organized an Advanced First-Aid Training in Kopa College, Bhaktapur. A total of 42 trainees participated in the program. The training program is designed to impart emergency medical care as well as disaster management techniques to local people. 42 First Aid Bags containing essential first aid equipments were also distrib-uted to the trainees.

Medical ClinicsThe first medical team managed to reach remote Jyamira village in Sindhupalchowk district and treated 79 patients. This area is one of the worst affected places where not a single house is left standing after the earthquake. Despite the severity of the problem and urgent medical help required in the area, no medical team or relief worker had visited it. Our team man-aged to treat patients with laceration, fall injuries and even found malnourished children. The team also distributed gloves and masks to local villagers who were searching destroyed houses for survivors. The second medical team organized a clinic in Alapot village of Kathmandu and checked 110 patients affected by the earthquake.

Earthquake Relief DistributionKaruna-Shechen’s relief team, working with LOOKS Nepal, a local NGO, managed to reach Kur Gau and Danda Kateri in Shyampati VDC, Kavre, to distribute relief for people of ward no. 6,7,8 and 9. The whole Shyampati VDC is very dry and suf-fers from drought. There is very little agriculture and the local people depend on animal husbandry. The communities living there – Tamangs and Dalits – are marginalized and deprived, and literacy rate is very low. 65% of houses, which were mainly built from mud, were damaged by the earthquake. Shechen Monastery distributed relief for people of ward no. 8 and 9 in Dhara Gaun VDC of Rasuwa district. Dhara Gum is a remote and very impoverished area, severely affected by the earthquake. Medical Clinics

The first medical team organized a clinic in Gurju Dhara, Kathmandu, where our medical team checked patients living in makeshift shelters after the earthquake damaged their houses. The 136 patients had cough and cold from sleeping outside in cold, rainy nights, many mosquito bites, joint pains and cuts from the earthquake. The children had diarrhea and headache from living in crowded tents.The second medical team organized a clinic in Dada Phedi, Nuwakot district, another remote and impoverished village severely affected by the earthquake. Most of the houses in the village have been severely damaged and the villagers are living in makeshift shelters. The medical team found many patients anemic. A total of 122 patients were treated.

A medical team from Shechen Monastery comprising 2 doctors and 1 nurse organized a medical clinic in Gari Gua of Sem-jong VDC in Dhading (patient figures not available). Another medical team from Shechen Monastery managed to reach Thulagau, and organized a medical clinic for ward no. 4 of Sarchung VDC, Rasuwa. A total of 20 patients were checked.

Earthquake Relief Distribution

Shechen Monastery team distributed relief in Gari Gau of Semjong VDC in Nuwakot district. Despite being severely affected by the earthquake Gari Gua hadn’t received any relief.

Shechen Monastery distributed relief in ward no. 7 of Lungurpa VDC in Sindupalchok district. All the houses in the area had been decimated by the earthquake.

Earthquake Relief Distribution

Karuna-Shechen’s relief team reached Chilaune, Kakri and Gauri Gua of Chatre Deurali VDC in Dhading District to distribute relief. The relief will help the villagers ward off immediate threat of hunger until further help arrives from the Government of Nepal. They will also be strong enough to work in the field and work to improve their shelters as monsoon is due to arrive in one month.

Another relief team from Karuna-Shechen, working with LOOKS Nepal, managed to reach Roshi Bimkhori, a very remote district in Kavre to distribute relief for ward no. 7 and 8. Rishi Bimkhori is located 103 kilometers from Kathmandu and it takes 4 hours to reach the village, due to rough road in very difficult and hilly terrain. The area doesn’t have electricity and the local people are very deprived. The Tamang and Dalit communities, who live in the area are mostly illiterate. The area lacks cultivable land and the villagers have to depend on animal husbandry and few greenhouses set up by an NGO.

Shechen Monastery organized relief distribution in ward no. 5 of Laharepauwa VDC in Rasuwa district. Rasuwa is one of the remotest districts in Nepal and the village has been very hard hit by the earthquake.Details:Affected Houses: 50Population Relief Provided: 300Relief Materials Distributed: 5 tarpaulin tents, 5 blankets, 50 sacks of rich (750 kg), 250 sacks of beaten rice, 150 kg of pulse, and 50 kg of salt.

Another team from Shechen Monastery distributed relief in ward no. 3 of Simle VDC in Nuwakot district. Day 15 (10 May 2015)

Medical Clinics

The first medical team headed for a remote village of Magaltar in Kavre and organized a clinic there. They treated 131 pa-tients who were suffering from variety of problems, mostly earthquake related. The children had all kinds of infections due to use of dirty water.

The second medical team visited an Old Age Home in Swayumbhu. Swyambhu was also one of the areas of Kathmandu that suffered extensive damage during the successive earthquakes. Shechen Clinic conducts regular clinic in the Old Age Home, but we had been unable to visit the site due to the dire priority need in other places. A total of 29 patients were checked in the Home.

Earthquake Relief Distribution

Karuna-Shechen, with LOOKS Nepal, visited Sarki Gau of Ravi Opi VDC in Kavre district to distribute relief to ward no. 6, 7, 8. Like in many rural villages in Kavre, Sarki Gau has also suffered extensive damage. Local people of Sarki Gau are very deprived and depend on farming and animal husbandry for survival. All 453 villagers are living in makeshift tents and food is in short supply.

Shechen Monastery organized relief distribution in ward no. 5, 6 and 7 of Jethal VDC in Sindhupalchok district.Details:Affected Houses: 45Population Relief Provided: 225Relief Materials Distributed: 100 tarpaulin tents, 140 sacks of rice (4200 kg), 140 packets of pulse, 5 kg of salt, 15 boxes of cooking oil, and 4 boxes of biscuits.

On the same day, the same team from Shechen Monastery also managed to organize relief distribution in Yarcha village of Golche VDC in Sindhulpalchok district.Details:Affected Houses: 44Population Relief Provided: 224Relief Materials Distributed: 40 sacks of rice (1200 kg), 40 packets of beaten rice (800 kg), 140 kg of pulse, 50 kg of salt and 5 cartons of cooking oil.

Another team from Shechen Monastery organized relief distribution in Parchange Gau for people of ward no. 8 of Saranthali VDC in Rasuwa district. The third team from Shechen Monastery organized relief distribution in ward no. 4 & 6 of Gau Kharka VDC, Nuwakhot district. Details:Affected Houses: 180Population Relief Provided: 1080Relief Materials Distributed: 90 tarpaulin tents, 90 sacks of rice (2400 kg).

Day 16 (11 May 2015)

Medical Clinic

The first medical team reached Subedi Gau to conduct a clinic in Gagar Phedi, where there were many earthquake victims. Most of the houses in the village have been damaged by earthquake. The patients had fever, cough & cold, and mosquito bites from sleeping in the open. Many also had diarrhea due to drinking polluted water. There were also few patients with fall injure. A total of 102 patients were checked.

The second medical team reached Vajra Yogini, Sanku, to conduct a clinic in another earthquake affected village. The village had even experienced few deaths, and 50% houses were damaged. Many patients had tonsillitis, fever, and a patient with serious heart problem was recommended for further treatment in a hospital. A total of 164 patients were treated.

Earthquake Relief Distribution

Shechen Monastery organized relief distribution in ward no. 1 of Buntang VDC in Nuwakot district. This area of Nuwakot is particularly hard hit and villagers are living in makeshift shelters and do not have enough food.Details:Affected Houses: 126Population Relief Provided: 756

Relief Materials Distributed: 40 tarpaulin tents, 20 blankets, 62 sacks of rice (1860 kg), 4 boxes of dalmot, 4 boxes of biscuits, 36 packets of ORS and 30 boxes of noodles (20 pieces each).

The same team from Shechen Monastery then managed to reach Mathelo Kattike village and distributed relief for locals of ward no. 7 in Gorshang VDC, Nuwakot district.Details:Affected Houses: 40Population Relief Provided: 240Relief Materials Distributed: 40 tarpaulin tents, 20 sacks of rice (600 kg), 10 sacks of beaten rice (200 kg), 2 boxes of dalmot, 4 boxes of biscuits and 30 boxes of noodles (20 pieces each).

Day 17 (12 May 2015)

At 12.35 pm another big earthquake struck Nepal. Most of the staffs of Shechen Clinic & Hospice were having lunch during the time. They all abandoned their meal to rush out of the building. Strong aftershocks continued for another 3 more hours. Most of the staffs stayed outside. The Clinic didn’t suffer any structural damage.

Shechen Clinic had two medical teams in the field. The first team was conducting a clinic in Dhulikhel. They were using a one-storey college building to conduct a clinic. The building rattled and shook during the tremor but didn’t collapse. The team was contacted and asked to assess their security, as well as the area. Luckily, there were no casualties or injuries, and after completing the treatment of the patients who were there, they were asked to report back to Shechen Clinic. The team managed to check 60 patients.

The second medical team was having their lunch in a “restaurant” in Thimi, when the earthquake struck. The staffs rushed out to an open field as tables, plates and cupboards started falling down. After treating 60 patients, the team made it safely back to Shechen Clinic.

In Shechen Monastery, shelter tents, which had begun to slowly dwindle after the first earthquake, reappeared as up to 2500 people took shelter there again. The monks are again busy helping the people set up tents and distributing water. As another earthquake and aftershocks continued to hit Nepal, many people in Kathmandu are now again taking shelter in open spaces.

Earthquake Relief Distribution

The team from Shechen Monastery distributed relief in ward no. 8 of Shikarbesi VDC in Nuwakot district and distributed essential medicines like paracetamol and dressing materials.

Day 18 (13 May 2015)

Due to landslides, blocked roads and frequent aftershocks, Shechen Clinic cancelled the daily two medical clinics bearing in mind the safety of the Clinic’s staff.

Earthquake Relief Distribution

The team from Shechen Monastery managed to reach Phulpingkot village and distributed relief for locals of ward no. 3 in Phulpingkot VDC, Nuwakot district.

Day 19 (14 May 2015)

Medical Clinic

The first medical team organized a clinic in Sudal, Bhaktapur, where the team treated 80 patients suffering from various earthquake related illnesses. The second medical team reached Kirtipur, another affected badly affected town in Kathmandu Valley to organize a clinic. A total 152 patients was treated.

Earthquake Relief Distribution

The team from Karuna-Shechen, working with LOOKS Nepal, managed to reach Walthing Tare village to distribute relief to people of ward no. 1, 7 and 9 of Buda Khaine VDC, Kavre district.

This is a very remote village with no road connection. The villagers walked for 3 to 4 hours to come to Walthing Tare to col-lect relief materials. Predominantly made up of the Tamang and Magar ethnic communities, this is a very poor region with high illiteracy rate. The land is very dry and only maize and millet is grown in the area. The area suffered extensive damage.
