From the President’s Desk .....

In Bangalore and elsewhere in the country, stray dogs attacking andmauling children is on the rise and the civic authorities are forgetting their responsibilities andcontinue to project that the NGO's and Animal Welfare Groups (AWG's) are responsible forsuch happenings. Currently there is a case pending in the Hon'ble High court of Karnataka. Ithas become a necessity that AWG's have to chalk out a programme for both the well-being ofstray dogs and the general public.

As in the previous years, the man animal (wildlife) conflict is continuing. It is very disconcertingthat the forest and revenue authorities have not taken the issue seriously and the suffering ofboth (man-animal) is reported every now and then. Similarly the ritual sacrifice of animals istaking place unchecked and sometimes supported by politicians, police and revenueauthorities. The Animal Welfare Board of India and NGO's have to view this seriously and haveto work out a programme to educate the general public and politicians to put an end to thisbarbaric practice.

From over a decade the animal birth control (ABC) programme is being conducted in many ofthe Metros, including Bangalore. A comprehensive study to know the effectiveness of theprogramme and also to bring amendments to the existing rules wherever required has to beenacted. It is a general feeling that the present ABC rules needs updating based upon fieldexperience.

Modernising of facilities available at animal welfare shelters, to meet the present dayrequirements, needs to be taken up. Veterinarians who are kind at heart and more humane willhelp to improve the working conditions. The shelter managements need to spruce up theiranimal shelters.

It is very sad that our present day youngsters are not available for voluntary services foranimal welfare work. The youth, by and large are busy with their present day competitiveeducation and any such involvement in extracurricular activities tells upon their competition. Asa result the non-availability of the busy youth for voluntary services. This is a serious situation,as there is no replacement stock to the seniors currently involved and if the situationcontinuous there will be a vacuum.

Modernisation of abattoirs has been placed on the back burner as the policy of the governmentis not clear and the cruel killing goes on even in this modern age, when the entire world isfollowing the most modern stunning at the slaguhter houses. For want of a political will, westill continue to slaughter food animals in a brutal way at our slaughter houses.

Finally we at KARUNA profusely thank all the Members, Volunteers, Staff Members, KVAFSU,BBMP and other Animal Welfare Groups for their interest in the well being of animals.
