Computer Lab Makeover

Our Computer Lab has had a complete makeover, with new furniture and layout to complement

our 30 new notepads and data projector . This has made the Lab far more usable and effective,

with every child in a class able to access their own computer.

Improvements such as this do not happen by themselves, and I would like to thank our

hardworking P&C for their financial contribution of $15000 towards the cost of the project, our Year

6 students who have donated the new chairs as their farewell gift to the school, and Mr Broughton,

Mrs Sanders and Mrs Taylor, whose energy and enthusiasm has driven this significant

improvement to the learning conditions of our students.

Surnames in Newsletters

I have had two queries this year about our practice of not giving students’ full names when we

acknowledge them in the Newsletter and on the website.

I understand that it is nice to read your child’s name in the Newsletter without the possibility of

confusing it with that of another child, but there is a good reason for this practice. Our policy - and

the policy at virtually every primary school - to publish only christian names of students is based

on advice from our Legal Services Directorate. Like all large schools, we have a significant- and

growing- number of families who request to keep their identity or location private. In most cases

this is as a result of serious and real safety concerns. To avoid any possibility of stigmatising or

drawing attention to those children and families, this policy is applied to all names published in the

Newsletter and on the website.

Please Park Legally

Thank you again to all those parents who act responsibly and safely on the roads around our

school. You are the overwhelming majority. Those few who persist in double parking, parking in

No Stopping Zones or Bus Zones, or parking for greater than 2 minutes in a No Standing Zone risk

fines between $165 and $397, and losing 2 demerit points. That risk, of course, is of absolutely no

consequence compared to the risk of being directly or indirectly responsible for the injury or death

of one of our students.

Responsible Students

On a brighter note, today Mrs Taylor and I had the pleasure of hosting this month’s Value of the

Month Morning Tea. This month’s value in focus was Responsibility, and we were able to

acknowledge a sample of the students in the school who display a high level of responsibility

every day at KPS. I say ‘sample’ because we clearly have more than 25 responsible school

citizens. The ones chosen by their teachers and peers are representative of the vast majority of

students who take their responsibilities as a Kariong PS student seriously.

Monday

Remember Monday is a Public Holiday and the school will be closed. Enjoy the long weekend and students should wear the winter school uniform from next Tuesday.

Preschoolers

I ask that you supervise your preschoolers and minimise the noise made while waiting to collect your school aged children. Learning takes place until 2:55 p.m. and having toddlers and preschoolers running along verandahs and squealing, disrupts the efforts of teachers and students who are trying to remain focused on the task at hand.

I also ask that once you have collected your children that you ensure they don’t go out of bounds and damage school property. Garden areas are not play areas.

Thank you for your support with these two matters.

Congratulations

Mrs Marieann Hawkins, one of our regular casuals, gave birth last Saturday to Benjamin Jack. We know she is enjoying quality family time with her three sons.

Amanda Taylor

Help support our school!

Remember to collect Earn & Learn points stickers when you shop at Woollies.

The more we collect, the more our school will benefit. This year we are aiming to redeem our

points for resources to support Literacy in our school.

The program ends on Sunday 9th June and we would appreciate it if all sticker sheets could be

returned by 20th July 2013.

Many Thanks

Choir Group News

On Saturday, 1st June 2013, the Kariong Public School Choir sang at the Footprint Festival at

Kariong Eco Gardens. The children sang beautifully to a packed hall - everyone there stopped

talking to listen to the choir.

Some of the comments we received from the audience were:

"It wasn't long enough."

"They sound wonderful."

"They brought tears to my eyes."

The choir is to be commended for their professionalism during the performance. Well done,

everyone.

We would like to thank the Gardeners of the Eco Garden for the t-shirts we used on the day and

the opportunity to sing for the community.

The choir sang a selection of the songs we are learning for the Primary Proms Performance at

Sydney Town Hall in September.

K - 6 PUBLIC SPEAKING

COMPETITION

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

Kariong Public School’s successful Annual Public Speaking Competition returns for 2013. This

competition has been a highly received initiative with positive feedback from parents, staff and

students. Over the years the audience have been entertained, informed and amazed at the

abilities, confidence and skill of each child.

All students are expected to participate at their class level. Students have free choice regarding

the topic of their speech. Students choose a topic they are interested in so they are enthusiastic in

the presentation; talk about hobbies, activities or issues that are important to you.

Length of Speech: Timeframe

Early Stage 1 (Kindergarten) -1-2

minutes

Stage 1 (Years 1 and 2) - 1-2 minutes

Stage 2 (Years 3 and 4) - 2-3 minutes

Stage 3 (Years 5 and 6) - 3 minutes

Public Speaking Tips

Generally the speech should begin with a greeting e.g. Good morning boys and girls. The

conclusion usually has an obvious ending and does not end in thank you.

Communicate a message

Have an introduction – this is your chance to grab the audience’s attention

Speak clearly

Body of speech should include interesting facts; make your points ….. use humour if you

can

Have a conclusion

Use palm cards to help you to remember what you want to say

Practise eye contact

Vary your tone

Use gesture and facial expression to convey interest

Keep to the time limit
