TED Talks Karen Thompson Walker
What fear can teach us
Karen Thompson Walker delivering her speech on “What fear can teach us”.
Her idea is based on comparing fear and storytelling and their similarities.
Capturing the Audience
She begins with a story , a true story. A ship called the Essex, wrecked by a sperm whale, leaving the crew with only 3 options to survive. They must decide where they will sail to.
Karen’s speech of fear, revolves around the shipwreck story, the decisions that lead to their misfortune and how fear drove them to making the wrong decisions.
Ted Commandment IVThou shalt tell a story
Karen, tells a story that leaves you in suspense. You listen to see what happens next.
Dynamism
I rated her 2 stars, because although it was interesting history, I felt maybe some more enthusiasm could have been used.
Interesting quote
Looking down a lot to her speech.
• Karen should have spent more time rehearsing and memorizing her speech.
Telling a story can be interesting, intriguing and suspenseful. Combining a great story and great idea with a great speech , will ensure your audience will want to hear what you say.
Using History to reinforce your ideas, prove effective when presenting factual evidence .
Karen Thompson Walker Sir Ken Robinson
Who is the better presenter?
Sir Ken Robinson
Sir Ken Robinson had a way of using comedic one liners that would make you laugh, combined by his dynamic story telling was impressive
Karen Thompson Walker
Karen’s story was interesting, but lacked in her delivery. Her idea was relatable to the story, but I felt if it wasn’t for that story her speech would have failed.
Advice
Prepare your speech, practice your speech, memorize your speech.
Face your fear head on and just do it.
