Right accessories complete a home

This month let's take a lookat accessories. Becauseaccessories reflect a

personal touch, they are ofparamount importance in thedecoration and completion of a

home. To bring this point home(pun intended), look closely atthe homes that are most

appealing. Most often they arethe ones that create a feeling ofcomfort, of being home. Nowtake that same house andmentally strip away all theaccessories and see how emptyit feels, no matter how elegantlyit is furnished.

Visual unitySo for such an important job,

how do we go about making theright choices? To begin, strivefor some form of visual unity. If,for instance, a room is formal, itwould be wise to steer clear ofrustic collectibles. Seems obvious, doesn't it? Well, it is. But sometimeswe need to be reminded of theobvious. Beautiful, delicateporcelains would be equally outof place in a casual room. But thereis always that pleasant element ofsurprise that is always good. Aroom that is way too perfect, like

out of a design school book, willbe boring to live in, but the elementof surprise does need to becompatible with the rest of thedecor. For example, a few antiquesin an otherwise contemporarysetting are a welcome visualchange. All accessories, be theypersonal treasures or objectschosen specifically for the room, should be compatible with thedecorating scheme. The itemsshould relate in some way to thecolour plan and the overall moodof the room.

Family mattersFamily photos are always

welcome and certainly add apersonal touch. Framing isimportan t as the a r t o f theframe should complement thespace it shares as well as thepicture it displays. Next, lookto sca le and ba lance . Anoversized picture on a smallwall will be uncomfortably outof place, and the opposite isalso true.

Art from the heartIf only small pieces of art or

pictures are available and a largewall is in need of art, arrange thesmall pieces decoratively on thewall to fill the space in a goodaesthetic manner.

Add a punchThen it's just a matter of

placing the items in the right place.Do your accessories make youhappy or are they there becauseyou have had them forever? Gothrough every single thing youconsider an accessory and decidewhy you have it.

UpdateNew, updated picture frames

for your favourite photos, freshlowers for those tiredarrangements, new lampshades, new candles, chenille throws toreplace old worn ones, even newslipcovers! For those who arereally tired of the look as they scantheir homes, try replacing smallfurniture pieces like coffee tables, end tables, and some lamps.

Moving into a new house is never an easy experience. It takessometime to truly start loving the place and convert it into a home whichhas your personal touch. And at times, it is possible we feel out of place. Here are some ways to make your new place seem your own at the earliest.ColourFresh coats of paint are the easiest way of adding that personal touch toyour home. If you do not like the builder's choice of colours or want tobrighten up a room, choose your favourite shades and change the appearancewith immediate effect. Soft, mossy green in the living room, warm cornmealyellow in the kitchen and dining room and bright, rich tones in the bedroomis what we recommend. The new and clean walls help in creating positivityand gives a base to the other interior decoration plans. All this need not costa bomb and can easily fit into a smaller budget.PicturesThis is another inexpensive way of personalising your home. Mountphotographs cut out of old coffee table books in inexpensive heavyblack frames rather than buying pre-framed prints. Or use cheapoutdoor wicker furniture inside.Bring in the greensTropical plants add colour and life to every room. But make sure youplace them at locations which receive ample sunlight.Shop smartKeep things manageable by making a list of everything you need to buy foreach room. Start by discarding hand-me-down items you really don't need.Plan the budget required to complete the work in one room at a time to makeit easy on the pocket.

MAKE YOUR NEWHOME YOUR HAVEN

Chevrolet Camaro deliversfaster lap times on road

Exterior Design and AerodynamicsWith the driving goal focused on peak performance capability, nothing onthe exterior is without purpose. It shares several racing-inspired, design bestpractices and lessons learned with the 2014 Corvette Stingray. New andrevised exterior content was developed to improve aerodynamics, powertraincooling and brake-system cooling, helping the Z/28 produce 150 poundsof downforce at 150 mph. Here are 28 features that helped the Camaro Z/28 lap Germany’sfamous Nürburgring road course four seconds faster than the CamaroZL1.1. Rear spoiler with ‘wickerbill'The aerodynamic coefficient of drag goal was achieved with originalCamaro SS content and an accessory rear spoiler, but to meet thedownforce requirements for Z/28, the spoiler was modified with a“wickerbill” – a small, ver tical tab at the edge of the spoiler. Althoughan aesthetically minor change, it helped improve rear lif t per for-

mance by 70 counts. That allows the Z/28 to handle turns at higherspeeds and deliver greater overall high-speed stability.2. Unique front fasciaThe Z/28’s unique front fascia is based on the Camaro SS, but the foglamps, air dam and the upper-base grille are replaced with coversthat reduce weight from deleting fog lamps, an air duct support bracket,an air flow-optimized grille for enhanced cooling and a modified fas-cia bottom that incorporates provisions for the brake cooling ducts. They funnel air from the lower grille to the wheelhouse liners and theunique splitter.3. Front splitterThe Z/28’s front splitter is a large aero panel that provides downforceat the front of the car, enhancing cornering capability and high-speedstability. Designed to withstand 250 pounds of downforce at its tip, it ismatched with an aero closeout panel under the front of the engine com-partment that also enhances aero characteristics – along with molded-in

aero features forward of the front wheels.4. Hood extractorA functional carbon fibre hood extractor provides increased engine cool-ing by allowing hot air an exit route. The design is similar in function to theextractor featured on the Camaro ZL1.5. Rocker moldings and wheel flare moldingsSpecific rocker moldings provide aggressive styling and improved aero-dynamic performance, while unique wheel flare moldings cover the Z/28’s wide tires. Deflectors at the bottom-front corners of the front wheelflares contribute to the car’s downforce-producing aerodynamics.6. Front wheelhouse linersUnique wheelhouse liners with closeouts work with the vehicle under-body to make the most of airflow.7. Belly panThe Z/28 underbody incorporates a belly pan that helps reduce front lift.Developed using computational fluid dynamics and wind-tunnel testing. It provides an aero benefit and contributes to drivetrain cooling. ModifiedNACA duct profiles are designed to draw air into the underbody tunnelarea, where the highly energized air provides extra cooling for underbodycomponents affected by the exhaust heat energy of the LS7 engine.Engineers call it “flying car” logic. On the 2014 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28,the Performance Traction Management (PTM) system delivers faster laptimes on an undulating race track by helping maintain the car’s full powerand momentum even if the tires briefly lose contact with the ground, incertain track conditions.Created for track use only, the “flying car” logic woven into the Z/28’sstandard PTM system integrates the chassis mode selection, TractionControl and Active Handling Systems. Each is tuned specifically in the Z/28 for optimal track performance and consistency, and is activated by thedriver pressing a button in the centre console.Without “fly car logic”, the PTM would interpret the force reduction onthe tires as a loss of traction and reduce torque to restore it. Suchan intervention would likely slow the car and reduce momentum.“PTM uses torque, lateral acceleration and rear-axle wheel slip todefine the amount of traction control required, but when the carclears a rise on the track, it normally wants to decrease torque toincrease traction,” said Bill Wise, Camaro Z/28 vehicle per for-mance engineer.“The unique logic in the system uses the ride-height sensors todetermine the reduction in force on the tires that’s unique totrack driving and allows the car to continue with uninterruptedmomentum and, ultimately, a better lap time.”Technologies such as PTM and the track-oriented logic helpedthe Camaro Z/28 log a lap on Germany’s legendary Nürburgringroad course that was four seconds faster than the Camaro ZL1,and beat published times for the Porsche 911 Carrera S and theLamborghini Murcielago LP640. The Flugpltaz section of theNürburgring has a rise that engaged the logic during the Z/28’s7:37 lap time.

Through systems that can recognize and distinguishwhether a driver is tired or inattentive, the car of thefuture can become even safer. Examples of this include technol-

ogy that detect closed eyes or what the driver is looking at.“This will enable the driver to be able to rely a bit more on theircar, and know that it will help them when needed,” explains PerLandfors, engineer at Volvo Cars and project leader for driversuppor t functions.By placing a sensor on the dashboard to monitor aspects suchas in which direction the driver is looking, how open their eyesare, as well as their head position and angle, it is possible todevelop precise safety systems that detect the driver’s stateand are able to adjust the car accordingly. This also means thatthe car will ensure that it does not stray out of the lane or gettoo close to the car in front when the driver is not payingattention, as well as being able to wake a driver who is fallingasleep.“Since the car is able to detect if a driver is not paying atten-tion, safety systems can be adapted more effectively. Forexample, the car's suppor t systems can be activated later on ifthe driver is focused, and earlier if the driver’s attention isdirected elsewhere,” Per Landfors explains. Some of the current systems that can be included are LaneKeeping Aid, Collision warning with full auto brake and AdaptiveCruise Control with Queue Assist. The technology is based on a sensor mounted on the dashboardin front of the driver. Small LEDs illuminate the driver withinfrared light, which is then monitored by the sensor. Infraredlight is just outside the wavelengths that the human eye cansee, which means that the person behind the wheel doesn’tnotice it at all.Driver sensors are also opening up other possibilities. Bymonitoring eye movements, the car would be able to adjust bothinterior and exterior lighting to follow the direction in which thedriver is looking. The car would also be able to adjust seatsettings, for instance, simply by recognizing the person sittingbehind the wheel.“This could be done by the sensor measuring between differentpoints on the face to identify the driver, for example. At thesame time, however, it is essential to remember than the car

Volvo Cars conducts research into driver sensorsin order to create cars that get to know their drivers

doesn’t save any pictures and nor does it have a driver surveil-lance function,” Per Landfors clarifies. The technology is already installed in test vehicles. Volvo Carsis also conducting research together with par tners includingChalmers University of Technology and Volvo AB to identifyeffective methods for detecting tiredness and inattention. The analysis of the driver’s state, known as Driver StateEstimation, in which driver sensors play an impor tant role, is a

field that may be key to self-driving cars in the future. The carwill need to be able to determine for itself whether the driver iscapable of taking control when the conditions for drivingautonomously are no longer present. A driver sensor could beof assistance in this. This technology is one of the many initiatives bringing VolvoCars closer to its goal for 2020 – that no one shall be killed orseriously injured in a new Volvo.
