I was already an avid listener and regular supporter, so it made sense to offer to come in for a few hours twice a year to help out.” Little did she know it would lead to a weekly volunteer on-air shift. A native of New York, Allison moved here with her fam- ily in 1980 to take a position with Sandia National Labs. She retired in February of 2013 as a senior member of the technical staff. Outside of work, she was active in the theatre community as a volunteer, a performer, and director, until the mid- nineties. “The amount of time and energy that it takes to rehearse 5 nights a week for 5 or 6 weeks at a time was not good for my family, not good for my career, not good for me,” she said. But once the kids were grown, and retirement was loom- ing, she knew she’d have time and energy to get back out KANW is proud to bring “The Splendid Table” to Tuesday mornings at 9 and “On Being” to Wednesdays at 9 a.m. “The Splendid Table” is radio’s preeminent food program airing on more than 400 public radio stations in the United States. Lynne Rossetto Kasper hosts this award-winning program that explores the entire spectrum of food: from cheese making to finding wine bargains to the science of a great cup of coffee to the best little greasy spoons in America. It’s a program for people who love to eat. “On Being” takes up the big questions of meaning with scientists and theologians, artists and teachers some you know and others you’ll love to meet. Host Krista Tippett uncovers the immensity of our lives with in-depth conversations about religion, ethics and large questions of meaning in every aspect of life. “To the Best of Our Knowledge” will move to KANW’s HD2 lineup on Sundays at 12 p.m. to fill the void left by the cancelation of “Bob Edwards Weekend” by Public Radio International. “Wits” has also been canceled by American Public Media and KANW-HD2 will now offer the BBC Newshour at 2:00 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. She thought, “Why not give it a try?” She’s been taking classes ever since with both the New Mexico Jazz Workshop and the Outpost in singing, ensemble work, jazz theory, and hand percussion. “The old cliché I used to hear from other retirees turns out to be true,” she said. “I really don’t know how I had the time to work.” In addition to making wonderful new friends, she is starting to perform around town. On Feb. 2 2010, Albuquerque Public Schools district voters approved a comprehensive school facility and educational technology package in general obligation bonds and a mill levy. This summer, a portion of that was used to construct a KANW training classroom and expand the music store. To celebrate the completion of the construction, KANW hosted an open house on July 22.

“The classroom addition is in response to increasing enrollment in recent years for the KANW Radio Broadcasting Class. We had been using a multipurpose conference, but the class had just outgrown it,” said Michael Brasher, KANW’s General Manager. “Educa-tion is a key component of KANW’s mission.”

These much needed improvements add-ed approximately 2,000 square feet to the 40-year-old building. The KANW Music and Merchandise Store also has a new look and we’ve added another production studio. These changes will improve security to KANW and improve customer convenience for shoppers.

ing in the jam session sponsored by Faith, Hope, and Jazz every Thursday evening at the Monte Vista Fire Station, and often sits in with bands that perform around town. Most recently, she performed with her friends in a local jazz trio, and the Open Space Visitor’s Center to usher in the Harvest Moon/Lunar Eclipse. In addition to her engineering work at Sandia, Allison has also taught pub-lic speaking. “Which is probably why I’m not that nervous talking on the air,” she said. But the operating board was a slightly different matter. “I’m so glad I finally had the opportunity to take the KANW broadcasting class. I feel much more confident now.”“I’ve been listening to KANW for years,” she said. And she’s a regular supporter. “So, to be on the air, sharing my favorite programs with my friends, is wonderful.” Allison has three grown children, all married, and two teenage grandchil-dren. Both her son and one of her sons-in-law are educators with APS. Her younger daughter and her daughter-in-law are also teachers. “I’m proud to have so many educators in the family.”
