The President’s Pen

As we see our spring calving season starting to get behind us and breeding season starting up I encourage you to take advantage of the tools that our American Angus Asso-ciation (www.angus.org) has for us to use. Research and development is always unfold-ing information for us to use in our cowherds. Beef Sire Semen companies also do a great job with literature and information on AI’ing and bulls to use in your program for the direction you are headed. Also talking to fellow Angus breeders about their programs

and bulls will be beneficial. Several of the Kansas Angus Association districts in the state will be hosting spring meetings. If your district does not have one I hope you will venture to a district that will be hosting one. It is not limited to having to live in that district to attend. The district meetings will be listed in the Kansas Angus News and on kansasangus.org The Kansas Angus Association website is a great place to keep up on what is happening in Kansas with our association, junior association and auxiliary www.kansasangus.org The summer looks busy with the Kansas Juniors at the Preview Show in June and the National Junior Angus Show in July. I hope you will venture to Tulsa this summer and take in the activities at the NJAS. The contests and events will impress you! See you down the Angus roads…..

Notes & News from Anne

If we had no winter, the spring would not be so pleasant; if we did not sometimes taste of adversity, prosperity would not be so welcome.

~Anne Bradstreet While looking through quotes about springtime this one caught my attention, I think as beef producers, farmers and ranchers we can all relate to it. As I write this the end of February is near and it is very cold and snowing. However last week we had spring-like temperatures and I noticed daffodils and green grass emerging. I know most of us eagerly anticipate spring — calves growing on green grass, catching up on chores set aside during winter , the promise of summer hay and breeding season. While we in the Angus industry have all experienced adversity, recently our industry has had the good fortune of prosperity with high de-mand for Angus genetics and unprecedented seedstock and calf prices. With many KAA members hosting sales in March and April and more offering bulls by private treaty ; I hope the coming months bring good weather and prosperity as you market your cattle. I hope that spring brings rain and green grass so that calves can grow alongside their mothers this summer. ….and that we all meet adversity with the hope of prosperity.

Angus industry – News and information provided by the American Angus Association ® & Certified Angus Beef , LLC.

Convention to Host First-Ever International Genomics Symposium The American Angus Association® and Angus Genetics Inc. (AGI) will host our first-ever International Genomics Symposium as part of the 2015 An-gus Means Business National Convention and Trade Show. The event takes place Nov. 3 in Overland Park, Kan., and will provide cattle produc-ers with cutting-edge information about advancements in genomics tech-nology – and how these advances impact their businesses. The symposi-um is sponsored by GeneSeek, a leading provider of comprehensive ge-nomics solutions to the cattle industry, including the GeneSeek Genomic Profiler (GGP-HD). “We are excited about the symposium and what it will mean for the cattle business,” says Dan Moser, AGI president. “Genomics is rapidly reshaping the way we produce livestock, and providing produc-ers with the best information available will not only help us improve quality and consistency, but also make our industry more competitive.” Genomics researcher and entrepreneur Richard Resnick will be the event’s keynote speaker. Resnick serves as CEO of GenomeQuest, a company that builds software to support genomic medicine, research and individualized treat-ments. Before becoming a bio-entrepreneur, Resnick was a member of the Human Genome Project at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Resnick will be one of several widely acclaimed experts on genomics tech-nology to be speaking at the event. “GeneSeek has partnered with the Angus breed since 2009, and our sponsorship of the symposium is a natu-ral extension of our long-standing commitment to the breed and the cattle industry,” says Dr. Stewart Bauck, general manager of GeneSeek/Neogen Agrigenomics. “There is intense interest among cattle producers about genomics – and this event will go a long way in serv-ing GeneSeek’s mission not only to advance the use of genomics technol-ogy, but also show the positive impacts it will have on producers.” The rise of genomic testing and evaluation is reshaping the Angus business at an accelerating pace. In fiscal year 2014, genomic testing increased by 32%, and AGI recently reported that genomic testing in the first quarter of fiscal year 2015 grew by more than 56%. The 2015 Angus Means Busi-ness National Convention and Trade Show takes place Nov. 3-5 at the Overland Park Convention Center in Overland Park, Kan. The first-ever convention last year attracted nearly 2,000 progressive producers from across the country. For more information about the convention, vis-it www.angus.org.

Reserve a Trade Show Booth, 2015 National Angus Convention Nearly 1,800 cattlemen and women attended the first-ever National Angus Convention & Trade Show last fall in Kansas City, Mo., and now it’s time for exhibitors to plan for what promises to be another successful event in 2015. This year’s Angus Means Business National Convention & Trade Show takes place Nov. 3-5 at the Overland Park Convention Center, just south of Kansas City. The larger venue will allow for expanded networking opportunities on the trade show floor, as the American Angus Associa-tion®presents one of the beef industry’s most thought-provoking events for cattlemen serious about producing quality beef. “We look forward to hav-ing even more Angus ranches and farms on display during the National Convention and Trade Show,” says Becky Weishaar, Creative Media di-rector and lead for the event. “The three-day convention is a fantastic meeting place for all sectors of the business, and it’s a marketing oppor-tunity you won’t want to miss.” In its inaugural year, the trade show fea-tured more than 100 exhibitors consisting of both allied industry partners and Angus breeders. Feedback from the event has been extremely posi-tive, Weishaar says, and many exhibitors quickly signed up to be back in

2015. “It has been probably the best first-year show I've ever been to,” said Dave Thornberg of SweetPro during the 2014 convention. “The level of quality here is beyond anything I've ever seen. Even on some of the more mature shows, so you guys have gone really the extra mile and beyond to make this a very formidable, well quality presentation.” Reserve a space for your Angus farm or ranch by contacting Kathy LaScala, trade show sales manager, at 913-486-7184 or [email protected]. About the National Angus Convention & Trade Show Overland Park, Kan., will welcome cattle producers from all sectors of the beef production chain Nov. 3-5 for the 2015 Angus Means Business Na-tional Convention & Trade Show. Registered seedstock breeders, com-mercial cattlemen, feedlot managers and packers are invited to take part in the three-day event focused on the future of quality beef production. In addition to industry-leading workshops, the expansive trade show, Asso-ciation business meetings and social events, the organization will also host its first International Genomics Symposium on Nov. 3. For the latest news related to the 2015 Angus Means Business National Convention & Trade Show, visit www.ANGUS.org.

New Horizons for the Angus Breed

The first quarter of fiscal year 2015 spells unlimited possibilities for Angus breeders. The nearly 25,000 members who comprise the American Angus Associa-tion® came off of an outstanding 2014 fiscal year (FY) this fall. Fiscal per-formance exceeded all expectations on nearly every front, from an in-crease in registrations, to record-breaking sales of Certified Angus Beef®

(CAB) brand product, to the most sales revenue ever reported for Angus seedstock: $326 million. The organization is now reporting that these trends have accelerated in the first quarter of FY 2015, which began Oct. 1, 2014, and the breed is on an early pace to potentially exceed last year’s performance. “It was an excellent year for our breed as demand outpaced supply and consumers continued to ask for quality Angus beef,” says Bryce Schumann, Association CEO. “And now we look forward to even more opportunities on the horizon to advance high-quality Angus genet-ics.” Registrations submitted to the American Angus Association in De-cember totaled 44,194, the eighth best month in history and the best De-cember on record. Year to date, total registrations for registered Angus seedstock grew 10%; that’s an increase of 10,000 more animals in the registry. And these numbers were achieved with more people raising regis-tered Angus genetics. Since October, memberships have grown 31%, and junior memberships have increased by more than 9%. Last year, Angus breeders saw more revenue for their registered Angus seedstock than at any other time in history — except, that is, for FY 2015. In FY 2014, breed-ers earned $61.5 million more in revenue than the year prior, doubling revenue per sale since 2010. Encouragingly, breeders show no signs of slowing down. Sales gross topped $114,712,900 from October through December, up 40% from the same time period last year. Registered Angus bulls averaged $6,445, up more than $1,700 per head on nearly 8,000 bulls sold in that time period, representing an increase in volume of more than 1,100 head. Female sales also reflected increased demand. Females averaged $5,385 per head, up more than $1,600 per head in value — a whopping 46% increase.

Dear KJAA Members, An exciting time of the year for cattle producers is back on track again. It is spring sale season; a time where we can rake in the benefits of the fruits of our labor. With cattle prices still hanging in at record highs, especially for the Angus breed, I have a good feeling about this year. Everyone should be excited to meet some new faces as well as converse with some old friends and previous buyers from the years prior. If your operation is similar to mine, it also seems like a fami-ly reunion. Let it be a time for the family to come together and indulge in some-thing that everyone is truly passionate about. Though we all know there will be some controversies and disagreements, don’t let that get in the way of the love for what you do and one another. Those who work hard, can cope with issues, and truly embrace the word compromise will always be rewarded at the end of the day. My family’s sale takes place the third Sunday in March and I am always super excited for it and to observe the outcome. Good luck to all you buyers and sellers out there and I hope that all of you can feel the same excitement that burns within me this time of year.

Sincerely,

Cody Theis KJAA President

Bailey Osborn Earns Junior Bronze and Silver Awards Bailey Osborn, Murdock, Kan., has earned the National Junior Angus Association’s (NJAA) Bronze and Silver awards, according to Jaclyn Upperman, education and events director of the American Angus Association® in Saint Joseph, Mo.The 14-year-old daughter of Chad and Molly Osborn attends the Kingman High School and is a member of the NJAA and the Kansas Junior Angus Association. She has participated in local, state, regional and national shows and showmanship contests. At the National Junior Angus Show (NJAS), Bailey participated in the team sales, extemporaneous speaking, quiz bowl, poster and livestock judging contests and the All-American Certified Angus Beef® Cook-Off. She has submitted weight data to the Angus Herd Improvement Records (AHIR®). The Bronze and Silver awards are the first two levels of the NJAA Recognition Program that began in 1972. Junior Angus breeders must apply for the awards, then meet point requirements in many areas of participation before receiving the honors. Applicants are evaluated in areas of junior Angus association activities and leadership, participation in showmanship, contests and shows, using per-formance testing to improve their herd and their progress in producing and merchandising Angus cattle. The NJAA promotes the involvement of young people in raising Angus cattle, while also providing leadership and self-development opportunities for the nearly 6,000 active members nation-

wide.

Our Angus Family

Henry C. Gardiner, 83, of Ashland, Kansas,

passed away peacefully January 21, 2015, at Ashland Care Center with his family at his side. Henry C. Gardi-ner was born September 14, 1931, in Ashland, Kan., to Ralph and Muriel Gardiner. Henry grew up on the fami-ly farm and from an early age recognized his passion for raising beef cattle. Unlike many youthful high school graduates, Henry had a grand vision for making beef cattle better. He attended Kansas State University where the newest technology, artificial insemination, was being introduced to students. Upon his graduation

from K-State, Henry returned to the ranch. For the next half-century, his insatiable curiosity and pursuit to make beef cattle improvements led to the early adoption of many emerging technologies such as artificial insemination and embryo transfer. In this pursuit, Henry Gardiner and Gardiner Angus Ranch served as a research partner with many land grant universities developing and improving technology such as artificial insemination, embryo transfer, expected progeny differences, carcass ultrasound, feed efficiency and DNA marker assisted genomic infor-mation. These technological advancements enabled Gardiner Angus Ranch to grow and expand to currently sustaining nine families, with partner herds in nine states and one foreign country. Through Henry’s visionary leadership, in 1996, Gardiner Angus Ranch was a founding member of U.S. Premium Beef, one of the beef industry’s most successful producer owned-marketing companies. To date, U.S. Premium Beef has returned more than $325 million in premiums to members through a value-based pricing system rewarding higher quality cattle. USPB em-bodied Henry’s belief that the future success of the beef industry depended on a true value-based marketing system that rewarded quality, instead of the “one price fits all” commodity system that had plagued the beef industry for decades. The success of USPB accelerated the movement of the entire beef industry towards value-based pricing systems. Today, Gardiner Angus Ranch is a fourth-generation, family-owned ranch and one of the premier Angus seedstock opera-tions in America. His life partner and wife of 57 years, Nan Arnold Gardiner; three sons and their wives, Greg and Debbie, Mark and Eva, and Garth and Amanda; and nine grandchildren survive Henry Gardiner. Also surviving is his sister, Helen Arnold. All the family resides near Ashland, Kan. Throughout his life, Henry gener-ously volunteered to help whenever he was called. He was awarded many acco-lades from his industry peers, including Beef Improvement Federation (BIF) Out-standing Commercial Producer of the Year (1981), Outstanding Seedstock Pro-ducer of the Year (1987) and Pioneer Award (1997); 1990 Kansas State Universi-ty Stockman of the Year; National Cattleman’s Beef Association 1998 Cattle Busi-ness of the Century Award, 2004 Beef Industry Vision Award; 2002 Kansas Farm Bureau Distinguished Service to Agriculture Award; Founding member, U.S. Pre-mium Beef; 2004 Certified Angus Beef Commitment to Excellence Award; Kansas State University Livestock and Meat Industry Council, founder and board member; American Angus Association Board of Directors, 1977-1983; 2004 Livestock Pub-lications Council Headliner Award and Kansas Cowboy Hall of Fame; and 2002 Kansas Angus Association Honorary Member. Henry was passionate about many things, most of all his family, his community, educating tomorrow’s youth, improv-ing the beef industry, sustaining and protecting the environment and his alma mater, Kansas State University. ,Memorial contributions may be made to the Henry C. Gardiner Memorial at Kansas State University. Contributions will benefit the Henry C. Gardiner Scholarship and Lecture Series. Memorial contributions can be made online at www.found.ksu.edu/give/gardiner or sent to College of Agriculture, Emilie Fink, Development Officer, 2323 Anderson Avenue, Suite 500, Manhattan, KS 66502-2911. Samuel Rueben Wagner, age 80, passed

away at the Smith County Long Term Care in Smith Center, on Sunday January 25, 2015. Sam was born January 29, 1934, at the hospital in Beloit, Kansas, to Oral Harlan Wagner and Mary Belle (Amis) Wagner. Sam grew up in Mankato, Kansas, spending after school hours and weekends behind the soda fountain at his parents’ drug store. After graduating from Mankato High School he attended the University of Kansas to obtain his pharmacy degree. He was extremely proud to play the trom-

bone in the KU Marching Band throughout college, and as an alumnus he never left a KU game without listening to the band play their finale song, “Home on the Range.“ He was particularly proud of this KU tradition since his Great-Great Grandfather Cal Harlan (along with Cal’s brother) helped Dan Kelly write the mu-sic and chorus. It was in the spring of 1873 when the community had gathered in Cal’s parents’ home for the spring celebration that “Home on the Range” was played for the first time by the Harlan Brothers Orchestra and little Virgie Har-lan. After graduating from KU in 1956, Sam worked as a relief pharmacist throughout the state. However, during basketball season he preferred to work close to home so that he could officiate basketball games with his good friend, Jerry Murray. It was also during this time that he met and fell in love with Gyra Caldwell, who lived in Harlan. They were married on June 14, 1959, at the United Brethren Church in Harlan, Kansas. In the fall of 1959, Sam began working full time for Cy’s Drug Store in Smith Center. Between 1959 and 1965 he and Gyra lived in Smith Center, however on weekends they would spend time with her parents, working with their registered Angus cattle operation. In 1965 Sam and Gyra moved to Harlan, where they went into partnership with her parents on the cattle. Caldwell-Wagner Angus Farm was then formed. As Sam’s responsibilities with Caldwell-Wagner increased, he slowly cut back on the number of days he was in the pharmacy; however, he still worked relief at Wagner Drug Store in Mankato at least one day a week until 1972.Caldwell-Wagner Angus was a family operation for Sam and Gyra, first with her parents and then later with their children John and Mary. As the herd grew, so did the amount of showing that the operation required. Sam and Gyra were proud of every award their cattle received, but they were most proud that they personally raised the majority of all of the cattle they exhibited. Sam served as the Kansas Angus Association President, and he judged numerous cattle shows throughout the country. In 1995, the Sam Wagner Family was recognized as a Kansas Angus Association Honorary Member for contrib-uting to the improvement of Angus cattle and the livestock industry in the state of Kansas. In the mid-1980s Sam returned to his pharmacy roots, ultimately manag-ing and co-owning Centre Pharmacy in Smith Center. He was awarded with his 50-year Certificate from the Kansas Pharmacist Association. Sam was a lifelong Jayhawk. He began logging recruiting stats for KU football and basketball in high school, a hobby he continued until the last several years of his life. Anyone who knew Sam also knew that a visit to the pharmacy could be accompanied by a lively conversation about the latest KU game, recruiting class, or upcoming sea-son. If he was not going to a cattle show, his next favorite trip was traveling I-70 with Gyra, and their good friends Marjorie and Jerry Murray, to attend a KU event. His two grandsons – Cullen and Cadyn – were a source of joy and pride. He enjoyed taking them to the pasture to check cattle, and kept a bucket calf for Cullen to help prepare him to someday show cattle of his own. He was overjoyed to have two grandsons and to share his love of cattle and the Jayhawks. Sam died January 25, 2015, with his wife at his side. He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife Gyra of the home; his brother Paul (Sharon) from Edwards, CO; son John from Leon, KS; daughter Mary (Gary) Banwart from Lawrence, KS; and two grandsons Cullen and Cadyn Wagner of Marwayne, Canada

Outliers By Steve Suther I just got around to reading “Outliers,” the 2008 book by Malcolm Gladwell on how coincidence, opportunity and hard work spell success. It made me think – probably its main goal. Calving season was the backdrop, starting nine

days earlier than expected because one of the calving ease bulls apparently succeeds by transmitting a very short gestation period. Cows were due to start two weeks after the heifers, but one of them calved to that same bull 15 days early. Maybe that’s why the book made me think about other outliers and coincidental opportunities. February in Kansas is known for changeable weather. This year we’re had temperatures from -2 to 72, but other years that has happened in 24 hours. I’m only calving in February because we have an ever-improving corral facility, and the breeding heifers are supposed to go on leased pastures May 1 with no AI (artificial insemination) opportunity. So the clock ticks more loudly as we get to the second weekend of May and sync Saturday. AI helps improve the herd, building on the best outliers and culling those at the wrong tail of the bell curve. That’s how we moved from at least 15% calving assistance in 2000 to sometimes none today,

and from 55% Choice carcasses in 2000 to 100% lately. Prime grading used to be much more of an outlier, not long ago comprising less than 2% of cattle, a “happy accident” that few bothered to track. Then it became a measurable incident, doubling to 4% in the last couple of years. Now it’s an in-tentional goal for at least a quarter of our calves here, as in many herds across the country. Anybody can reach those goals by using the genetic predic-tion tools backed by tens of millions of records and DNA testing, to get continually better results from the ranch to the plate. Bulls can vary a huge amount as measured by expected progeny differences (EPDs), but the best outliers in my book are those that hit near the top in several traits. If I go for any extreme it is docility, to add value to cow families that have just about everything else working well. February’s sometimes-bitter cold and occasional blizzards are easier to deal with when heifers calve on their own in sheltered areas and sheds, but we’ve had issues with chilled calves. Of course they are born wet, and sometimes a heifer won’t pick the most protected spot to minimize wind chill. This year we added a heated calf hut, and I’m pretty sure it has paid for itself by helping a neighbor help me when I couldn’t be here one night, bringing in a potentially stressed calf for a couple of hours of comfort to get her started right. The neighbor is an outlier for neighborliness and that particular heifer is from a line that needs an infusion of outlier docility – but her heifer calf carries just that, so maybe we’ll keep them around to see how it turns out. We can’t tell for sure if the several more times we’ve used the hot box have made a difference, but all the research says what starts well ends well, and this should give our calves another edge in fully realizing their potential. One lesson from the book (and reflecting on real life) is the importance of readiness. Your herd can achieve greatness if you give it every opportunity. Questions?
