As a result, significant advances in the level of traditional arts were achieved and these master crafts were passed down through the generations, becoming a source of great pride for Ishikawa Prefecture.

Kanazawa Castle ParkKanazawa Castle Park is an open green space, preserving the historical and cultural heritage of Ishikawa for generations to come. Many castle structures, such as the Hishi-yagura, Gojukken-nagaya and Hashizume-mon, have been restored to their former glory. This restoration project was the biggest of its kind ever attempted in Japan since the Meiji period (1868 ~ 1912).

Kanazawa

Kanazawa, which was once a feudal castle town, is home to Kenroku-en Garden – one of the three most famous gardens in Japan – as well as many historic districts and cultural assets. It is also the main city of the Hokuriku region that brings together the best of the old and the new.

Kenroku-en GardenWith its great natural beauty augmented by the four distinct seasons of Ishikawa, Kenroku-en Garden is regarded as one of the three most beautiful gardens in Japan and designated as a Special Historic Site by the Japanese government.

Higashi Chaya DistrictHigashi Chaya District is where, even now, the appear-ance of the old streets still exists and has kept its old face. When evening approaches, the sounds of the shamisen and Japanese taiko overflow from the tea houses.

Naga-machi Buke Yashiki DistrictIf you rove around the back streets from the center of town, you can easily find Naga-machi Buke Yashiki District situated inside a complex stone-paved district reminiscent of the old castle town. This is the site where the samurais of the Kaga clan once lived and where you can recall the atmosphere of the feudal times.

Omi-cho MarketOmi-cho Market in Musashigatsuji has served as the kitchen for the people of Kanazawa for approximately 270 years. There are 170 stores inserted into the small alleys where fish from the Sea of Japan, local meats, vegetables, fruits and seasonal foods are at the center of the trade that occurs here.

KorinboKorinbo is one of the most prominent shopping and entertainment districts in the Hokuriku area. Its bustling streets are lined with department stores, boutiques, restaurants, and drinking places.

As its name suggests, modern century contemporary art is the main focus of this Museum. It’s a museum with a new sense that not only displays paintings and sculp-tures but diverse expressive modern works as well.

The Motenashi Dome of Kanazawa StationThe symbol of Kanazawa Station’s East Plaza is the Motenashi Dome, which conveniently functions as a giant umbrella shielding visitors from rain, which is quite common in Kanazawa. Looking from the front, one can see a big, tall wooden gate that resembles a hand drum.

The Noto Peninsula

The Noto Peninsula has two faces: while its west coast is rough and wild, the east coast is soothingly calm. Noto is famous for its Kiriko festivals held all over the peninsula during the summer, and its famous Wakura Onsen resort.

Wakura OnsenWakura Onsen resort is a 1,200-year-old, harbor-facing, Japanese-style hotel filled resort that offers visitors an unparalleled Onsen experience. Gazing out at the calm waves of Nanao Bay while soaking in the Onsen is simply amazing, don’t you think?

Chirihama Beach DrivewayOn the west coast of the southern Noto Penin-sula lies the unique Chirihama Beach Driveway that is 8km in length. The fine-grained sand on this beach has become impacted through its absorption of seawater so much so that automo-biles can run on top of it. During summer, the beach is bustling with bathers and is very well known throughout the country.

Mitsuke-jima IslandThis rock island is located about 200 meters offshore and is also known by the name of Gunkanjima, or the battleship island, since its shape resembles a battleship. The bare rock island is covered in thick greenery on top, creating a beautiful shadow on the sea surface. The whole area is one large seaside park.

Senmaida Rice TerreceAlong the coast’s steep hillsides are more than a thousand terraced rice paddies. From the horizon the sunset forms geometric patterns making for an ideal viewpoint.

Nafune Gojinjo DrumThe origin of this festival is a folktale about how a Gojinjo drum was used to help the villagers in devil masks draped in seaweed drive off an attacking enemy force, thus giving this drum the reputation for its imposing sounds.

Soujiji TempleHead temple of the Sotoshu school of Buddhism established some 700 years ago, Soujiji Temple lost most of its monasteries to fire in the Meiji period. Afterwards, the head temple title was transferred to another temple in Yokohama.

Wajima Morning MarketThe nationally famous Wajima morning market where there’s a stretch of approximately 200~300 stores selling fresh fish, dried foods, vegetables, pickled vegetables, and folk crafts.

Kaga/Hakusan

The Kaga region is famous for its many Onsen resorts includ-ing Yamanaka Onsen, Yamashiro Onsen, Katayamazu Onsen and Awazu Onsen. Mt. Hakusan, one of the most famous mountains in Japan, is a national park with a rich variety of alpine plants and wild flowers and is bustling with ski-lovers in winter.

Natadera TempleNatadera Temple is a structure where nature and man-made things co-exist in harmony. The rock covered grounds of this temple have been very skillfully arranged. This is a nationally famous spot for fall leaves that attracts many visitors every year.

Yamanaka OnsenIn Yamanaka Onsen, you can enjoy various landscapes of the four seasons such as fresh greens and fall leaves near the Kakusenkei River. As said in the Onsen folk song Yamanaka-bushi, this Onsen resort is filled with traditional culture by which the guests’ hearts and bodies are healed.

Ataka Barrier Ruins (Ataka-no-seki)With a storyline based at this historical spot, the Kabuki Performance of “Kanjincho” and the Noh Performance of “Ataka” help make the “Ataka-no-seki”site famous and popular. The story took place in 1187, with the main character being Minamoto no Yoshitsune.

Katayamazu OnsenKatayamazu is a beautiful Onsen town located on Lake Shibayama-gata Lake where you can easily spot the reflection of Mt. Hakusan on the crystal-clear lake.

Festivals in IshikawaThere are many types of traditional festivals: festi-vals in spring to pray for abundant crops, festivals in summer requesting for safety at sea and the blessings of the sea, festivals in autumn to express gratitude for a good harvest, and festivals in winter to drive away evil sprits and bring luck and safety for the New Year. The seasonal festivals in Ishikawa provide the energy and prayers necessary for ev-eryone to live and work harmoniously.

Takewari Festival KagaDuring this “bamboo-splitting festival”, young men dressed in white attire split bamboos and drag a snake made out of large rope around as part of a ceremony to drive away evil spirits.

Tomobata Festival Notochou Uchiura OgiThe portable “mikoshi” shrine for this festival is loaded onto the “Gaza-bune” (boat). A tall festival flag is vertically lofted and the boat is rowed into Tsukumo Bay where multi-colored streamers and raised flags are lined up and paraded around, making for a magnificent display.

Seihaku Festival NanaoThe festival features three super large, 12-meter high, 20-ton floats (the largest in Japan) that compete for the most imposing appearance.

Otabi Festival KomatsuAtop gorgeous lacquered festival floats, children’s “kabuki” drama is performed, and its delightful and enthusiastic performance pleases the crowd.

The Noto “Kiriko” FestivalMany festivals take place on the Noto Peninsula during the summer. The center of attraction for many of these festivals is the “Kiriko” sacred lanterns that are approximately 10m in height. These great lanterns are carried through the streets by young people and dance wildly through the night sky. The Noto Town “Abare Festival” and the Nanao City “Issaki Hoto Festival” are especially heroic and magnificent in nature.

Okuma-kabuto Festival Nanao/NakajimaWearing a goblin mask, a festival character called “Sarutahiko”, using amusing ges-tures, leads the mikoshi portable shrine procession through the streets as it carries a forest of 20m high crimson festival flags. Tradition has it that it was influenced by a ritual from the Korean Penisula, which is evident in its exotic mood.
