Annual Quality Assurance Report 2009-10

PART – AThe plan of action chalked out by IQAC at the beginning of the academic

year 2009-10 towards quality enhancement.

TQM Training will be organized for incoming students.

The Department of Chemistry to start M.Sc. in Analytical Chemistry.

The Department of Botany to start add-on course in plant taxonomy.

It plans to continue with annual inter-class competition in raising garden plants.

The Department of Zoology to start Medical Laboratory Technician Course.

The Department of Sanskrit to start Dr. B. N. K. Sharma memorial Lecture series.

It plans to continue adopting deserving students who opt for Sanskrit optional subject

in B.A. I Semester.

Social Science Association plans to continue the Consumer Rights Awareness

Programme.

Social Science Association to conduct Seminar on Human Resource and Education.

Counseling the students before admission and guiding them to select the best subject

combination.

Meeting with parents will be arranged during admission.

Fare well function will be arranged for the final year students.

The English Department to conduct a National Seminar on “Achieving excellence in

English for academic and professional purposes”.

To give more stress on motivating the students to participate in different sports and

cultural activities.

OUTCOME ACHIEVED BY THE END OF THE YEAR

The Department of Chemistry has started M.Sc. in Analytical Chemistry with 19

students in its role. It has also recorded 100% passing in the first semester.

Farewell function for the final year students was organized by the teaching staff.

The Department of Botany has conducted inter-class competition in raising garden

plants.

The Department of Sanskrit has started the proposed B.N.K. Sharma memorial

lecture series.

The Department of Sanskrit has adopted deserving students of Sanskrit subject.

Admission committee has counseled the parents as well as students during

admission.

The members of the faculty are encouraged to take up minor-research projects.

Six teachers have got their minor-research project sanctioned by UGC.

The department of English has conducted National Seminar on “Achieving

Excellence in English for Academic and Professional purposes” on 13 th March

2010.

The Bioclub has conducted programme on Bird Watching on January 23rd 2010.

B.Sc. students participated in Tiger Census programme in association with the

Forest Department.

NCC Cadets donated Books to the Reading room.

PART – B1. ACTIVITIES REFLECTING THE GOALS AND OBJECTIVES OF THE

INSTITUTION.

To meet the demands of changing time and to reflect the goals and objectives of

the Institution, some new subjects were introduced during previous years. The

departments concerned were provided with sufficient number of books and laboratory

equipments, Computers, LCD and other computer aids. The college has received UGC

grants to upgrade Laboratories and Library.

The changing circumstances compel the students to enrich their knowledge by

studying value-added add-on courses along with their degree curriculum. The college

continues with the existing add-on courses.

The college is in a semi-urban area and to make higher education easily accessible

to the poor rural students, all the applicants are allowed to take admission to the first

semester level.

In this way the educational activities of the college reflect accessibility to and

equal opportunities for education which are the major considerations addressed to by the

goals and objectives of the Institution.

2. NEW ACADEMIC PROGRAMMES INITIATED.

The Post Graduate Course in Analytical Chemistry was started from this academic

year with 19 students on roll.

The existing add-on courses have been continued.

3. INNOVATIONS IN CURRICULUM DESIGN AND TRANSACTION.

3.1 The curriculum being solely designed by the University, some members of our

faculty take initiative in curriculum revision, design and development in the

capacity as members of Board of Studies.

a. Dr. V. K. Hampiholi is a member of BOS for Sanskrit, Karnataka

University, Dharwad.

b. Dr. Mahesh Adkoli is a member of BOS for Sanskrit in P.C. Jabin Science

college, Hubli, an autonomous college.

c. Dr. M. G. Hegde is a member of BOS for English, P.G. Department of

English, Lingraj College, Belgaum, and has designed the P.G. syllabus in

English studies.

d. V. R. Shanbhag Department of Psychology, is a member of BOS for

Psychology, Karnakak University, Dharwad.

3.2 The innovations in transaction carried out are mentioned below.

a) Engaging students in field work.

b) Study tours.

c) Group discussions.

d) Students are motivated to teach in the class.

e) A brief talk by the students on text related topics at the beginning of every

class.

f) Use of Power-point.

g) Use of film version of literary texts.

i. Film version of Shakespeare’s “The Tempest” to teach the play to the

B.A.II Additional English class.

ii. Audio recording of Adventures of Tom Swayer to teach B.A.I

Additional English text.4

h) Use of language Laboratory.

i. B.A.I optional English: Stress patterns and intonations.

ii. Functional English – practical classes.

i) Visits to nearby industries.

j) Student –Teacher discussion method.

k) To motivate the students to prepare model question papers on prescribed

texts.

l) Conducting seminars.

m) Involving students in projects.

n) Encouraging students to participate in Science Exhibitions.

4. INTER –DISCIPLINARY PROGRAMMES STARTED:

Six inter disciplinary associations conduct varieties of programmes which cater to

the needs of the students.

A. ▫ SOCIAL SCIENCE ASSOCIATION consisting of Economics, History and

Political Science departments conducted A. D. Shroff Memorial Elocution

competition for college students on 30th October 2009. The competitions were

sponsored by Forum of Free Enterprise, Mumbai .

▫ Social Science association and the District Heritage Club Sirsi jointly organized

Uttar Kannada Heritage Awareness Programme for students on 30th January 2010.

D. Department of Chemistry:

1. The Post graduate course in Analytical Chemistry was formally inaugurated by

Dr. S. K. Saidapur, Vice Chancellor, Karnatak University, Dharwad on 16 th October

2009. Dr. S. T. Nandibewoor, Chairman, Post Graduate Department of Studies in

Chemistry, Karnatak University, Dharwad was also present.

2. The Department organized an interaction programme for B.Sc. Final year students

with Dr. S. T. Nandibewoor, Chairman, Department of Chemistry Karnatak

University, Dharwad on 16th October 2009. The students interacted with the Dr.

Nandibewoor on “Scope of Chemistry and employment opportunities”.

3. The Department organized Prof. S. S. Koppalkar memorial endowment lecture

instituted by the past student Dr. M. S. Hegde, Dean, Indian Institute of Science,

Bangalore on 24th April 2010. This year’s Lecture was delivered by Dr. M. S. Hegde

himself on ‘Auto Exhaust Catalysis’. Prizes were given to students scoring highest in

Chemistry.

4. The Post graduate students visited the Chemistry Department of the Karnatak

University and also participated in the State level seminar on “Recent Developments

in Chemistry” on 18th March 2010.

E. Sanskrit Association “Upanishad”

1. Inaugural Prof. B. N. K. Sharma memorial lecture was delivered by Dr. Ashok

Chachadi, Dean, Kausali Institute of Management, Karnatak University, Dharwad

on 2nd September 2009.

2. Special guest lecture on “Why We Need Sanskrit ?” was delivered by Shatavadhani

Dr. R. Ganesh Bangalore on 16th February 2010.

F. Hindi Department

1. ‘Hindi Saptah” a week long programme was organised from September 7th to 12th

2009. Various activities such as Elocution, Debate, Quiz were held.

2. ‘Hindi Day’ was observed on September 19th 2009. Dr. Manjunath Ambig, Dakshin

Bharat Hindi Prachar Sabha was the Guest Speaker.

3. ‘Hindi Patriotic Song Singing competetion ‘ was held on January 26th 2010.

5. EXAMINATION REFORMS IMPLEMENTED.

The reforms introduced in previous years have been continued this year also.

7. INITATIVES TOWARDS FACULTY DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME

The members of the faculty are constantly encouraged to attend Refresher /

Orientation courses / Work-shop and Seminars, so that they can get the

exposure to recent developments in their respective subjects.

15. COMMUNITY SERVICES AND EXTENSION ACTIVITIES:

18.1 a. National Service Scheme.

NSS Unit of our college has 100 dedicated volunteers who take care of the

community service at large. The cadets undertake environmental sanitation,

campus cleaning, ground leveling, tree planting and other service oriented

works towards society.

Annual camp was held in rural place Mirjan with camp Motto “Healthy Youth

for Healthy India” in association with local village panchayat and school

development committee. The volunteers help the villages by educating them

towards cleanliness, Yoga, Personality development, environmental and social

awareness. Volunteers also undertake Cleaning, Ground leveling and road

repair work in the village during annual camp. The “Red Ribbon Club”

organized AIDS awareness camp on 15th March 2010. Dr. Shrinivas Nayak

M.D. addressed.

NSS unit in collaboration with RUDSET – Haliyal organized Blood donation

camp in Kamala Baliga college of Education on 18th March 2010. The cadets

also participate in various events. Miss S.P. Prafulla has won the first prize in

the state level debate held in Karwar. On 6th October 2009.

Miss S.P. Prafulla , Mr. Poornaprajna Kulakarni and Mr. Tejas Watwe won

First, Second and Third place in the Debate on “Shri Krishnadevaraya”

Cadet Mr. Jayant Patgar participated in the University level Leadership camp

at S.S.Arts college, Babaleshwar.

National Cadet Corps (NCC)

NCC Army and Naval wings has a total of 170 cadets enrolled. The Cadets

regularly donate blood. They participate in National Integration, Traffic

Awareness, Save Girl Child, Anti Drug and Anti Dowry campaigns. The

cadets also are involved in tree plantation and “ Shramadana. ” The cadets

clean the premises of the college. They visit old age home and spend time

with elders and offer fruits to them.

The Cadets have donated books worth Rs. 9000 to the reading room to

benefit the students.

The cadets are given exposure by deputing them for different State level and

National level camps. The cadets participate in various events and win prizes.

30. ACTIVITY AND SUPPORT FROM ALUMNI ASSOCIATION:

An Alumni Association of the college is working for the improvement of the

college. It holds constant meetings. It participates in the development meetings

and also in the college programmes.

Alumni Shweta Sabhahit has donated books worth Rs. 6000 to the Chemistry

department.

Health check-up of each and every student is a regular feature of the college.

Services of a group of senior medical practitioners are utilized for the purpose.

The health records are noted in the cumulative records. Doctors are available

on request in case of emergency. First aid facility is available on the campus.

33. PERFORMANCE IN SPORTS:

1. The College Chess team comprising of Darshan Gaonkar B.Sc.III,

Vinod Patgar B.Sc. III, Sagar Naik B.A.III, Prakash Patgar B.A.III got

fourth place in the Inter zonal Chess tournament held on September 14 th to

17th, 2009 at Basaveshwar College, Bagalkot.

2. Two students were short listed for University Volley ball team.

Gajanan Pai B.A.III got selected for the Karnatak University Volley Ball

team and represented the University in the Inter University tournament

held in Kerala.

3. Sudhir Gouda B.A.II got Third place in 400 Mts running in the Karnatak

University Inter collegiate tournament held in Dharwad .

4. Our college won the Karnatak University III zone Volley Ball tournament

at B.G.V.S. College Sadashivgad on 11th and 12th March 2010.

5. It also won the Karnatak University Inter-Collegiate Volley Ball

tournament at B.G.V.S. college Sadashivgad on 13th March 2010. Shrikant

Bhandari B.A.III won the best Lifter and Best All rounder and

Raghavendra B.A.I won the best Smasher awards.

34. INCENTIVES TO OUTSTANDING SPORTS PERSONS:

a. The Physical Instructor gives Special coaching to the Athletes.

b. Starters, Spikes and sports wears are provided.

c. The colleges bears the expenses of the Athletes participating in

different competitions.

35.1 Achievements in curricular activities :

Shanteri Pai B.A.I got Kohlatkar Prize for securing highest marks in Sanskrit

at the University level.

Prafulla S.P. B.A.III participated in the UGC sponsored National conference

on “Role of Youth in Containing Terrorism” held in Sri Mritunjaya College of

Arts, Commerce and BBA, Dharwad on September 25th and 26th 2009 and

presented a paper entitled ‘ Understanding Terrorism’.

Prafulla S.P. B.A.III participated in the UGC sponsored National Conference

on ‘Challenges before Autonomous Colleges’ held in SDM college Honnavar

on November 2nd and 3rd 2009 and presented a paper entitled ‘Re-imagining

UG Education: A Student’s Perception of Autonomy’.

Prafulla S.P. B.A.III presented a paper entitled ‘English for Specific Purposes

v/s English for General Purposes’ at the UGC sponsored National Conference

on ‘Achieving Excellence in English for Academic and Professional Purposes’

held in our college on March 13th 2010.

Nayana Nagekar B.A.III presented a paper entitled ‘Fall and rise of English in

India after Independence’ at the UGC sponsored National Conference on

‘Achieving Excellence in English for Academic and Professional Purposes’

held in our college on March 13th 2010.

Deepa Naik B.A. II presented a poster on ELT at the UGC sponsored

National Conference on ‘Achieving Excellence in English for Academic and

Professional Purposes’ held in our college on March 13th 2010.

1. Tejas Watwe won the First prize in District level Elocution Competition

held at Government College, Karwar on September 5th 2009.

2. Nayana Nagekar won the First prize in the District level Essay

competition held at Government College, Karwar on September 5th 2009.

3. Our students participated in the youth festival of Karnatak University held

at Dr.A.V.Baliga college of Commerce and won prizes in different events.

Poornaprajna Kulkarni B.A.I won First place in Elocution and Second

place in English Recitation competition

4. Tejas Watwe and Chitra P.Naik B.A.II won Second place in Debate

competition.

5. Tejas Watwe won Rs 1000 Cash prize in the Elocution competition held

in Dharwad by the Kosmos Club on October 2nd 2009.

6. S.P.Prafulla and Tejas Watwe won the First and Second prize and Cash

prizes of Rs 5000/- and Rs. 3000/- respectively in the Elocution

competetion on Solid Waste Management conducted by the Town

Municipality of Kumta on November 1st 2009.

7. Poornaprajna Kulkarni and Tejas Watwe won First and Second place in

the Quiz competetion conducted by the AIR on January 3rd 2010.

8. Sheetal Bhandari B.Sc.II, Pushpa Hegde B.A,III and Yashoda Gouda

B.A.II won First, Second and Third place respectively in the Essay

competition conducted by the Health Department on January 25th 2010.

9. Vasavi Bhat B.Sc.II and Tejas Watwe participated in the Kannada Vijnana

Competition in Haveri.

10. Six units of exhibitions were exhibited in the Dharwad Zone Science

exhibition at M.M. arts and Science college, Sirsi. The Unit on Solid

Waste Management made by Santosh Hegde and Rajat Karant was

selected for the State level exhibition held on April 7 th and 8th 2009 at

B.V.Bhoomareddy college, Bidar.

11. Poornaprajna Kulakarni B.A.I has been selected as the “Best

Volunteer” by the FPAI. He participated in the “3 Day Youth Retreat”

organized in Chennai on 6th to 8th April 2010 and underwent Two day

Training Programme for Youth Forum Members at Mumbai on April 28 th

and 29th 2009

a. ACTIVITIES OF GUIDANCE AND COUNSELLING

1. One day Orientation Programme for B.A.I and B.Sc. I students was held in the

beginning of the Academic year.

2. Two week special coaching programme for the benefit of students desirous of

appearing for CET for the B.Ed. course was organized by English Association

from 24th July to 6th August 2009.

3. Women’s cell “Shakti” of the college organized a lecture on “Empowerment of

Women” on September 30th 2009 in collaboration with the Lions Club of

Kumta. Prof. Meena Nayak spoke on the occasion.

4. Students were given guidelines to apply for different scholarships and jobs.

5. Organised the introduction programme of Graduate Finishing School of Vidya

Poshask on March 24th 2010.

b. PLACEMENT SERVICES PROVIDED TO STUDENTS:

1. Manjunath Bhat and Avinash Gavadi of our college were deputed for the

campus selection by the Zuari Industries held at Ankola on July 10th 2009

and got selected.

2. An orientation programme and test for selecting candidates for MBA

course was organized by Mallikarjun - IMS Global Education, U.K. on

January 21st 2010. 21 students were short listed.

3. Franklin Institute of Air Hostess conducted a campus interview

on 6th April 2010. 10 students were short listed.

4. Tata – Johanson Company organized recruitment drive on April 3rd 2010

for Uttar Kannada District in our college. 25 students of final year were

selected.

WISHES TO ADD.

Our college has finished 5 years of Accreditation and will undergo Re-

accreditation in the coming Academic year.

The staff and students contributed their might to Chief Minister’s Flood Relief

fund. A Sum of Rs. 25000/- was collected and handed over to the

Tahashildar, Kumta.

Ford Foundation from Us has selected our college as one of the nine

institutions in South India for the social upliftment and improvement of higher

education.

16 members from teaching community assisted the Civil administration by

acting as PRO in the Gram Panchayat Elections as well as in the counting of

votes.

PART – CPLANS FOR 2010-11

1. The Bioclub to organize a Educational work shop on Coastal Biodiversity

Conservation and Management in collaboration with the Forest department.

2. Plan to organize Planting of more trees in association with the Forest

Department.

3. To undergo NAAC Re-accreditation.

4. To apply to UGC for financial assistance to improve the Infrastructure and other

physical facilities.

5. The Department of Sanskrit will continue adopting deserving students of

Sanskrit optional in B.A. Ist Semester.

6. The Department of Chemistry to organize the state level seminar on ‘Water

Quality in the Present day Scenario’.
