With offerings focused around the theme of Energy, attendees had the opportunity to experience 16 multidiscipli‐ nary tracks and more than 3600 slide and poster presentations. Keynote speaker Thomas Friedman discussed the need for constant innovation in the workforce—a skill mechanical engineers have in spades—and featured speak‐ ers Nathan Widenman, Rustom K. Mody, and Michael Coats shared a wide range of expertise with their fellow me‐ chanical engineers. IMECE was also host to over 150 board and committee meetings in which hundreds of ASME volunteers came together to discuss policy, plan for the future, and share best practices from around the globe. Nota‐ ble Knowledge & Community (K&C) meetings included the K&C Operating Board, the Global Communities Operating Board, the Technical Communities Operating Board, and the Committee on Information and Com‐ munications, which puts together the K&C Leadership News. Many meetings were open to outside mem‐ bers, who gained new knowledge of the work these volunteer leaders do on their behalf. AWARDS RECOGNITION AT IMECE 2012 Congratulations to Anita Rebarchak!
At ASME’s illustrious Honors Assembly held at the 2012 International Mechanical Engineers Congress & Expo (IMECE), Committee for Information and Communications (CIC) Member‐at‐Large Anita Rebarchak received the Old Guard Young Engineers Award. This honor is aimed at furthering the goal of the Old Guard to help young engineers bridge the gap between col‐lege and professional life. Congratulations to Anita for the recognition of her great work as a mechanical engineer and an ASME volunteer!
Hank Cook Receives Award from Board of Governors
Congratulations to Hank Cook, Chair of ASME’s 2013 Nominating Committee, for receiving Fellows Status from the Board of Governors. Mr. Cook was recog‐nized for his skills as a project manager and plant engineer, as well as his talents as a leader, problem solver, and organizer. As part of his award he received a certificate, badge, pin, and membership card. We’re delighted to see Mr. Cook recognized for his great work with ASME and for the industry.
The First Outstanding Program Award (OPA) Winners Announced
The inaugural Outstanding Program Award (OPA) results are in! Spon‐sored by the K&C Programs and Activities Board, the OPA program rewards Sections for putting on outstanding programs for their mem‐bers and thereby provides examples of best practices for all Sections. Students and Researchers Win Big at ASME Society‐Wide Micro and Nanotechnology Poster Forum
The ASME Society‐Wide Micro and Nanotechnology Poster Forum, held at the International Mechanical Engineers Congress & Expo (IMECE) 2012 in Houston, featured more than 200 posters from students and researchers from around the globe. This year, an unprecedented seven ASME Divisions sponsored 10 cash prizes. ASME offers congratulations to the following award winners:

GAIN CRUCIAL SKILLS AT THE 2013 LEADERSHIP TRAINING CONFERENCE
The eighth annual ASME Leadership Training Conference (LTC) is fast approaching! With the theme of “Spring Training—to Elevate ASME’s Game for World Class Service,” this year’s LTC will be held at the Hilton Ballpark Hotel, St. Louis, Missouri on February 28–March 3, 2013. The conference provides ASME volunteers with lead‐ership training, essential information for key unit and committee members, and networking opportunities with peers.
LTC caters to a wide range of knowledge, with two distinct tracks designed to meet all participants’ training needs. The Select Track caters to incoming or current unit and committee level volunteers, while the Premier Track provides the people and planning skills needed by incoming unit Chairs or Vice‐Chairs as they prepare to lead their unit. Both tracks help at‐tendees become more confident in their leadership roles, gain useful operations tools, and reinforce lessons in realistic ap‐plications and scenarios.
The workshops will be complemented by an Idea Mart exposition featuring ASME products and services—including a both for CIC—and there will be a plenary session on asme.org. Want to share the knowledge you gain with your fellow unit members and debrief your ex‐ecutive committee? All presentations given at the LTC will be available on the LTC web site!

ASME New York and New Jersey Rally after Superstorm Sandy
On October 29, the East Coast was rocked by Superstorm Sandy, a natural disaster that ultimately left 7.5 million people without power, and tens of thousands without homes. The storm shut the ASME New York and New Jersey offices for a week until power could be restored.
ASME staff and leadership have provided incredible support to those in need during this challenging time. With the support and collaboration of ASME, the staff raised an astounding $78,000 in vacation day donations, cash, and checks to support their colleagues who were impacted by Sandy. The staff in turn rose to the challenge to create another great IMECE for 2012 with limited time and resources.
ASME also had the benefit of the support of members and volunteers who have given their time and funds to support the organization and help ASME through adversity. As volunteer Dan Nathan‐Roberts said in his note to ASME staff, “We, the entire ASME family, are thinking about you and wishing you the strength to move forward.”
As we look ahead to the future of the Society, it’s inspiring to see that no matter the roadblocks set in front of us, we always face them together as one ASME.
Planning for NEMB 2014 Is Underway!
Thanks to the great response and participation for this year’s Global Congress on NanoEngineering for Medicine and Biology (NEMB), planning for NEMB 2014 has already begun!
Next year’s event will take place in the spring on the West Coast. Details are still forthcoming, so be on the lookout for addition‐

Strategic Budgeting for Improved Services
At this year’s International Mechanical Engineering Congress & Expo (IMECE), the Board of Governors approved a new plan for group
budgeting that will help ASME look ahead and achieve goals more strategically. With the support of ASME staff, volunteer leaders will as‐
sess and communicate their unit’s expertise, capabilities, and needs. The Board of Gov‐
ernors and Committee on Finance and Investment (COFI) will then utilize that infor‐
mation to set a strategic direction, with clear targets and long‐term objectives.
In the forthcoming months, ASME groups will take a five‐year outlook, and then begin
development of a three‐year balanced budget, which will be eventually approved by the
ASME Board of Governors. This planning takes into account not just the current opera‐
tions and plans, but looks ahead to address strategic objectives, international expan‐
sion, new products and missions, and legislative and economic concerns.
