tipsSafety fi rst, last & alwaysBefore driving a car, do a simple safety check. Turn on the lights and walk around the vehicle to ensure that all lights are in working order. Also check your blinkers for proper operation. Look for any fl uid leaks or things hanging from the vehicle. Check that the tires are properly infl ated.

When you get into the car, adjust all mirrors and seats before placing the key in the ignition. To properly adjust the left mirror place your head against the left window and adjust the mirror so that you can just see the left side of the car. For the right, move your head towards the center of the vehicle and adjust the right mirror in the same way. When you are sitting correctly in the driver’s seat, you will not be able to see your vehicle, but your blind spots will be greatly reduced!

Always wear your seatbelts.

Always drive with your headlights on, a car is visible for nearly 4 times the distance with its headlights on even during daytime hours.

Keep your eyes moving. Notice what is happening on the sides of the road and check behind you through your mirrors every 6-8 seconds.

When driving on a two lane road that allows parking on the right, stay toward the center line to allow for room if someone were to open their door to exit their vehicle in front of your car. This forethought will help you from swerving to miss an opening door. If there is no parking allowed on the road position your car toward the right to allow for more room between you and oncoming traffi c.

When traveling behind other vehicles, there should be at least a 4 second space between your vehicles. When the car in front of you passes a stationary object, slowly count to yourself. If you pass the object before the allotted time, you should back off. When traveling at night or inclement weather, these times should be doubled.

Do Not TailgateTailgating is one of the primary causes of rear end crashes. Roughly one in 20 people require more than two seconds simply to react to a hazard such as a car braking in front of you. In addition, if a car does not brake with the same intensity as the vehicle in front, the gap between the two cars will quickly close. Thus it is recommended that when driving, one keeps a distance of at least two to three seconds when behind another car.

Drive S-L-O-WSome studies do show that going too slow can also increase the rate of accidents. Traveling at the recommended speed limit or a little slower, though, will give the driver 1 or 2 extra seconds of reaction time - time to think or time to brake. In the late 1980s, Sun Life Financial advisor Colin Noble was literally thousands of miles away from the desk he sits at today in his Victoria Street office. Back then he was on a life-changing journey, having decided to serve as a missionary in Japan before settling into a full-time career.

For two years, Colin traveled to locations that ranged from large, overcrowded cities to small fishing villages, offering fellowship and a helping hand where it was needed. “I did a variety of things, like teaching free English classes, volunteering at food banks and even harvesting rice crops for disabled farmers,” says Colin. “Being a missionary really reinforced how much I value having a positive impact on people’s lives.”

Embarking on a different kind of missionUpon returning to Canada in 1989, Colin knew he wanted to pursue a line of work that would allow him to continue to make a difference. As a result, he chose to become an advisor, with the mission to help people achieve lifetime financial security. “My dad was an advisor, so I had seen first hand how much good can come from showing people how to use money wisely to enrich and protect their well-being,” explains Colin. Leslee Lucy, Financial Centre Manager at the Kamloops location where Colin works adds, “His genuine desire to help people is evident in the way he goes above and beyond to ensure his clients are well taken care of.”

Continuing education is keyOne of the ways Colin shows his commitment to delivering the best service to his clients is by keeping his financial knowledge up to date. “I’m a big believer in continuing education,” says Colin. “With tax laws and other key financial elements constantly shifting, ongoing education is critical to making wise decisions.” As Leslee notes, “Colin has taken full advantage of the opportunities Sun Life Financial provides for professional development. He holds the distinction of being the second youngest person ever to achieve the Chartered Financial Consultant designation in Canada. He has also completed the Registered Health Underwriter, Certified Financial Planner and Chartered Life Underwriter designation programs.”
