CAMP News

Leadership Camp

On the 4th-6th of April our new college leaders will be attending a Leadership Camp that will develop them into effective student voices within the college. The students are made up of the College Captains, the Sub-School Captains, Home group Captains and the Student Representative Council. The camp is based around learning about leadership and building working relationships with other team members. The students will also be expected to take on tasks that will put them out of their comfort zone and develop self esteem through this process. Most of all they will learn this through fun and interactive activities.

If you are interested in any further information on the camp please contact Mr. Brett Wilson on 9707 7600.

SPORTS News

It has been a hectic few weeks in Sport with – Yr 7 Volleyball and Tennis, Intermediate Cricket and Tennis and a Baseball Gala Day. The Yr 7 boys Volleyball team came a close second out of 8 teams which was a great effort well done boys! Our Yr 7 Tennis team dominated with the girls winning all matches and going through to the next round. The boys team together with Belinda Hannan did extremely well placing 2nd I was very impressed with all our students on court. Our Yr 8 boys Cricket team played Fountain Gate in the Regional Final on Monday the 21st March, they never looked like losing, having the game wrapped up in 1 hour 45mins. The boys are a good chance to go all the way to the Final which is very exciting for the College and the team. Both our Intermediate Baseball and Cricket teams won and proceeded through to Regional Finals. Last but not least our Yr 8 Baseball team state runners up last year won all their matches at the Gala day. A big thanks to all staff and parents involved.

TECHNOLOGY News

JAVA IS NOT JUST A PLACE...

In Information Technology, Year 10 students are currently learning how to program in Java after they learn the language VB.net. Unlike the Indonesian city, Java (in computing terms) is a programming language and computing platform that runs on more than 850 million personal computers worldwide as well as on mobiles and TVs. It helps you to play games online; view images in 3D and chat with people around the world (just to name a few applications!). Our Information Technology students have the benefit of learning about technology that is very relevant to everyday life.

Our Year 11 students are learning to make web pages. We look forward to seeing the products of their creativity and efforts.

* Reminder: Students are invited to compete in this year‟s NSWU international computer skills competition. See Miss Polan in B-Block office for more details.

AND THEY’RE OFF AND RACING.... Our students recently had the opportunity to attend the Superbike Racing and Classic Car Racing, which were both held at Philip Island. The Classic Car Racing excursion gave students the rare chance to see and experience the thrill of old cars being restored and modified to race. Some of the cars date back to the early 1900s! A big highlight of the day was to attend a guided tour by a „young‟ 80 year old gentleman who managed the event. His knowledge of each and every vehicle and their history was phenomenal.

FOOD FOR HEALTHY LIVING Year 7 Our Year 7 students have made a terrific start in Food Technology. They have been demonstrating safe and hygienic use of tools and equipment in the kitchen and learning about stoves, hotplates and the griller. On the menu this term for our junior masterchefs has been kebabs and macaroons. * Reminder: Workbooks for Year 7 Food Technology can be purchased from the General Office for $9 and please bring containers to each lesson for this class.

Year 9 Our Year 9 students have been learning about healthy eating. They have recently watched the DVD “Eat to Save Your Life.” They have a Diet Related Disease Investigation CAT due this week. We are now moving to the processed and packaged food component of the course. Students will make many healthier versions of commonly eaten convenience foods. Last week we made Moroccan rolls and this week we make chicken nuggets (mmm!).

There is an excursion coming up soon. Miss Murphy‟s class will go to Eden Rise on Friday 1st April and Mrs Graham-Lee‟s class will go on Tuesday 5th April. At Eden Rise we will assess the nutritional quality of foods sold in food courts. We will also examine the foods labels of many foods commonly available from Coles Supermarket. * Reminder: Please ensure all permission slips are returned by next lesson.

Lunchtime activity of the week:

TOP SOCCER ON SHOW AT THURSDAY LUNCH

About 20-25 boys

display a lot of

enthusiasm and some good skills every Thursday during lunchtime. Many players are keen followers of the World game and show it with outstanding attacking moves. Last week, the blue team, driven by Ali and Ife, put a lot of pressure onto the red team. The “reds” replied with determination and Mohamed, Ilyas and many more fought to the last of their energy. This week, the red team ran out 4-3 winners in an even game with the “blues” convinced that they can turn it around in the next match. Everybody is already looking forward to the next instalment of the growing rivalry. More players are always welcome. Teachers in charge: Leo Stauber & Vishnu Devnarain.

MUSIC News

VACANCIES: We still have a number of spaces left for any student wishing to learn a musical instrument at Kambrya College. Please obtain an expression of interest form from the Front office and return it as soon as possible so that lessons can commence immediately.

Instruments on offer: Flute, Clarinet, Saxophone, Trumpet, Trombone, Bass Guitar, Guitar and Drums.

VOICE LESSONS: If any student is interested in getting voice lessons, these will be offer as of the start of term 2. These lessons will be structured different to the rest of the Music Department. A voice teacher will conduct lessons at Kambrya College but will not be directly part of the Instrumental Music Department. Therefore lesson costs are somewhat different.

For interested students, voice lessons will be charged at the rate that the Victorian Music Teachers Association sets, which is $60 per hour or $30 per half hour. If there is a group of 2 students for half an hour the cost will be $18 per student. There is also a separate set of guidelines for voice students that parents and students will need to adhere to.

Any enquiries can be directed to Roz Wilson on 9707 7600 or [email protected] .

For your URGENT Attention!....

Dear Parents/Guardians/Carers, It has come to my attention that some students in the school may have head lice and I seek your cooperation in checking your child‟s hair this week Head lice do not transmit infectious diseases – they are transmitted by having head to head contact with someone who has head lice. You may be reassured to know that head lice are commonly found in places other than at Kambrya College Head lice are common in school-aged children and are the most adaptable of creatures. They have survived living solely on humans for 10,000 years!!!! What can you do? I seek your cooperation in checking your child‟s hair and in those instances where head lice or eggs are found, treating your child‟s hair. Please see the attached pamphlet Treating and Controlling Head Lice, from the Department of Human Services. This pamphlet has informative guidelines regarding detecting and treating head lice and eggs. How do I treat my child for head lice? The attached pamphlet (as noted above) has informative guidelines regarding detecting and treating head lice and eggs. If head lice or eggs are found on your child‟s hair you need to inform:

the school and advise when the treatment has started,

parents or carers of your child’s friends so they too have the opportunity to detect and

treat their children if necessary. When can my child return to school? Health regulations requires that where a child has head lice, that child should not return to school until the day after appropriate treatment has started. Please note, this refers only to those children who have live head lice and does not refer to head lice eggs. Kambrya College is aware that head lice can be a sensitive issue and is committed to maintaining your confidentiality.

Yours Sincerely,

Joanne Wastle

Help Your Child Get the Most from High School

High school is the beginning of adulthood for students. Their decisions and choices begin to impact their future. Read on to learn how to help your child understand the importance of taking high school seriously and how to get

Talk to Your Child

Ask you student what they want to get out of high school. What do they expect? What do they think will be different about it? By discussing these and other topics before the first day of school, your child can start to get into the mindset of being a high school student. Talking about their fears and apprehension can also help ease many of their worries about high school.

When you talk about your own experiences, make sure not to overemphasize them. You want your student to be successful with their own interests and hobbies, not for them to relive your high school experience.

Be Supportive

It is important to be your child's personal cheerleader, and to be enthusiastic and encouraging of their individual interests. Discuss the various elective classes available at their new school. Show them how they can develop their own academic interests and hobbies through the available classes. See if there is a list of all the clubs and extracurricular activities, or a club fair at the beginning of school.

Learn More

You should familiarize yourself with your child's high school classes. Many first and second year courses are prerequisites for honours and advanced placement courses. If your child is an advanced student and/or is interested in attending a college, completing honours and advanced placement courses is important.

If you are concerned that your child is enrolled in the wrong courses, discuss this with your student and their guidance counsellor. Help your student get into the right track of courses to meet their future goals.

High School Orientation

Orientation is a great opportunity for your student to become familiarized with their new school's campus. Knowing the layout and where their classes are before school begins decreases their chances of becoming lost or late to class. Being lost or late on the first day is a fear of many students and creates a bad impression on new teachers.

Your child will be able to meet some new friends at orientation before classes start. They might also be able to meet some older high school students that can give them hints and tips with their new classes and teachers.

Emphasis on Education

Don't put too much pressure on your child, but make sure they realize that high school will affect their future. Discuss with them where they see themselves as adults. Ask what colleges or careers they think they are possibly interested in, and then research these fields together. Having even a vague plan for their future can provide the needed motivation to succeed throughout high school.

9. COMPUTER GAMES BOOT CAMP

Are you interested in becoming a profess-

Computer Games Camp is run by the Faculty of Information Technology and is aimed at Year 9 - 12 students. 10. SO YOU WANT TO BE AN ARCHITECT? Architects develop plans

and drawings for buildings, working with builders and planning authorities to see that their ideas are implemented. Architects need to study an accredited university degree to get registration with the Architects Registration Board. Appropriate university architecture degrees in Victoria are run by Deakin University (Geelong Waterfront campus), Melbourne University (following a Bachelor of Environments), Monash Uni (Caulfield campus) and RMIT (City). The ATAR for Deakin last year was 78.10, Melbourne (Environments) was 85.00, Monash was 91.45, while RMIT used a pre-selection kit, interview and the ATAR to select students (so ATAR not published). You need to visit the various universities (eg at open Day) to help determine which course best suits you. Another course you might wish to consider is the Advanced Diploma of Building Design (Architectural). This is run at a number of TAFEs such as Box Hill, Chisholm, Holmesglen, RMIT, Swinburne, Victoria and Wodonga. This 2.5 year diploma offers para-professional skills and knowledge for the design of residential/ industrial/commercial buildings. Like many other TAFE diplomas, with good results, this diploma can be upgraded to a degree.
