WHAT IS KALAP TRUST?Kalap Trust, is a non-profit organisation working with the people of Kalap.

Kalap is a village lying forgotten in time in the upper Garhwal region of the northern state of Uttarakhand in India, ~200 kms from Dehradun city. Situated at an altitude of 7,500 ft, the village is nestled among virgin pine and deodar forests, and overlooks the gorge cut open by the roaring River Supin.

The community of about 450 people ranks high among the 'most remote places' in India. It is 11 kms from the nearest roadhead. The village is a gram panchayat and comprises the main village Kalap and the four settlements - Karba, Unani, Jhai and Dhawla.

In terms of development indicators, the village ranks almost zero on all parameters. The village is a 'Grade F' posting for any government official (Dehradun is Grade A). The only barely functioning public institution in the village is the government school. The biggest crisis is a lack of any public health infrastructure.

The village economy is primarily agrarian and pastoral. There is no cash economy. There is no scope for employment which generates wages.

Kalap Trust is an initiative by people who are familiar with the village and its problems. The basic idea is very simple -- 'to make Kalap a better place to live'.

The Trust was formally incorporated in September 2014, though work has been going on since June 2013. These are the following areas where the trust has been involved in:

1. Developing the village as a responsible tourism destination. To generate gainful employment for the local people, tourism was the first choice thanks to the village's scenic location. Local men and women are being trained as mountain guides. Rooms in village homes are being converted for homestays. For more details visit: www.kalap.in | www.facebook.com/visitkalap

2. Addressing Public HealthPublic health remains the most serious priority in Kalap. The trust was formally incorporated and work started with urgency to cater to this crisis. With small-scale intervention ruled out, the only alternative was to scale up. The first medical camp was conducted in the village in the first week of October 2014.

a) TUBERCULOSIS is almost approaching epidemic proportions, with almost 40% of people screened at our first medical camp suspected of being infected. b) Nutritional Disorders are the next biggest issue. Vitamin deficiency and anaemia are a priority. The most vulnerable are children and women. We need to intervene to address this.

3. Creating more livelihood optionsWork is underway to setup two cooperative units in the village to focus on handloom products and food processing.

4. Environment conservationa) Wood is the primary source of cooking fuel. We need to urgently find solutions to make use of this finite resource more efficiently. b) The lack of livelihood options has meant that some villagers are involved in smuggling endangered herbs and medicinal plants from the forests around the village. The only solution to this is creating sustainable livelihood options for the community.

5. Cultural preservationThe village is home to a unique cultural identity which needs to be preserved.

a) Garhwali, the spoken language is listed in UNESCO's 'Atlas of the World's Languages in Danger'. It designates Garhwali as a language which is in the unsafe category and requires consistent conservation efforts. Most critical is preserving local folklore, which is rendered as songs.

b) The dance form again is unique to the region. An important part of instilling pride in the cultural identity would be promoting the dance form.

FUNDRAISER – PHOTO SALEDo you want to own a photograph of a place and a community which has never been photographed before?

Quite rare, isn't it? This was the start of what made working at Kalap special.

The first call for support was to document this unique place and its people. It has been one year now, and the collective effort has ensured the beginning of a trove of content that the community can treasure.

One of the first objectives of this effort was that the community, the villagers, start to take pride in their home. Working in the Himalayas you will see a lot of negativity in local communities simply because of the harshness of life there. They often are not able look beyond that. "We did not know our village is this beautiful," was the first reaction, when the first photographs of the village was seen through our lenses. This has today gone beyond verbal appreciation, you now will hear villagers say: "Don't

throw garbage there, it will spoil the beauty of the photographs". Solid waste management is a challenge, and today photography is playing a small role in it!

Where do you start when you are at a place that has never been photographed before? That was the biggest challenge. It helped that everyone who went there was trigger happy! Today we have an archive that captures the moods of the village in

every season and the people in different facets of life.

The people who have worked at the village as documenters are: Yatish VT, Deeptangan Pant, Prathap Nair and myself, during th course of my work there. They spent their own money to travel, live and work in the village.

This was a unique experience for me personally, working with different photographers, giving space to their creative urges and then finally curating their work. And it is a continuous process, as I will continue to be photo-documenting in the village and as will

everyone who works there.

Today we invite you to be a part of this story and contribute. The project has expanded with Kalap Trust. The photographs are now going to give back to the community. We are selling some of them to support Kalap Trust's activities (details at

http://tinyurl.com/ne9clkn).

The profits from the sale will be split 80:20. 80% goes to Kalap Trust and 20% to the owner of the photograph.
