www.kzoovette.org July 11, 2012

Meeting called to Order by President Arlene Matteson at 7:40 PM. Welcome/Introduction of Guests: No guests present this evening. Approval of Minutes for June 13, 2012: Motion made by Linda Hearld, seconded by Judy Morrison. All members voted in favor and

motion was carried.

Board Member Report President’s Report: Arlene

Health/Car/Family Updates Nothing was mentioned this evening.

“Detroit Tigers Bus Trip”, Friday, August 31st As of this evening we show 22 people have signed up to attend this event. Arlene assures us that we

will fill the bus with 45 people making it $55.00 per person. We meet at Meijer’s on Westnedge at 4:00 PM. The game begins at 7:00 PM. Please contact Arlene/Tom ASAP if you wish to attend.

“Family Helping Family” NCCC provides us with a “Family Helping Family Directory” and it is linked to our website.

Car Business Recommendations Arlene has compiled all this very useful reference information and posted it on our club website. A

hard copy will be available to each member at our August meeting. Old Business

“Parade of Homes” There was no official report of revenue gained from the “Parade of Homes” as Jim Commissaris was

not present this evening, though people who worked it stated that there was a lot of attendance.

July 4th Parade in Schoolcraft – Dave French Dave stated that 5 cars from our club were present that day in spite of high temperatures which

definitely affected overall attendance for this parade.

“Club Throws” Arlene announced that our club throws are in and ready to be claimed by members who ordered

them with payment due at that time. Please contact Arlene or Tom if you were not at the club meeting and wish to receive your club throw.

5 Vice President’s Report/Competition Report: Sheldon Smith Sheldon reported that we had 21 students at our May 19th Driver’s School at Eaton Proving Grounds,

Marshall; our club profited $95.46. Governor’s Report: Mike Beery Saturday, July 14th, is “Onstead Show Car Nationals @ MIS”, and Mike is, again, encouraging

members to visit our MI website, then go to the Jackson Club website as they are putting on this event. The “NCCC 53rd Annual Convention”, Topeka,KS, was held on June 23-30, 2012. Bill Siebel attended

the convention this year and Mike invited him to share his experience with members. Unfortunately, he reported that while passing a truck, one of the truck tires fell apart causing him $3,000 worth of damage to his corvette! He had no wins at the Valve Cover Race this year, though in spite of the afore mentioned, he did very much enjoy being at the convention.

Please refer to the newsletter for additional information. Treasurer’s Report: Tom Matteson Tom reviewed the Income/Expense Statement for 05-10-12 through 06-11-12. Motion was made by Linda Hearld, seconded by Larry Morrison, to accept the Treasurer’s Report

as presented. All members voted in favor and motion was carried. Tom brought our attention to the Saturday, August 11th, “Midwest Corvette/Chevy Show” in

Valparaiso, IN, and circulated a Sign-Up Sheet for attendance to this event. Member at Large +5 Years: Larry DeLong Larry spoke about the changes and additions to the 2012 Events Calendar. Please refer to our

website/newsletter for the latest updates. Member at Large -5 Years: Glenn Russell Glenn has been working on changes to our KCC Logo, and spoke about static clings and a club flag.

His search continues for just the right fabric on which to represent our club flag and he will share that information at our August meeting.

Men’s Breakfast: The men will be meeting for breakfast on Monday, July 16th, at 9:00 AM, at “Mulligan’s Grill & Sports

Bar”, 9136 Shaver Rd. in Portage (west side of road and south of Meijer’s). Club Members Report – Open Forum: Tom Matteson was recently contacted by an employee from “Community Living Options”

(Kalamazoo), and was asked if it was possible that someone from our club could grant a “50th birthday wish” to her friend and co-worker, to ride in a “Blue Corvette” on her special day. Jim Horrock agreed to grant her this wish and represent our club, with Dick Krogel as backup in case of rain. She requested that they drive passed all the group homes where she is employed (Kalamazoo) as her friends and co-workers came outside and waived back to her in the “Blue Corvette”. In the end, a collection was taken up by her co-workers with $33.00 collected and presented to Jim for gasoline; Jim and Sue were each given black T-Shirts and black bags representing “Community Living Options” for their thoughtfulness.

Arlene shared with members that Bev Smith no longer will be available to assemble and mail out the

club newsletter. We will need another member to volunteer to continue to staple and mail copies of the newsletter in order to offer this service. Please contact Arlene with questions/considerations ASAP if you would like to assist.

We thank you, Bev, for helping to compile and mail out the newsletter this past year! Bob Marcinkewicz is working with Shane on our Website and is adding “Tech Tips” so we can refer to

Driving School and KCC Low Speed by Doug Blower

This year’s McLaughlin/Siebel/Meesseman Memorial Low Speed

Driving School was held on a nice, hot and dry day. No need to drive

through any rivers or lakes in the course this year. During this driving

school the students learn not only driving techniques for various types of

obstacles one would encounter at the tracks around, but also learn how to work the course as a corner

worker and get a good feel for how an autocross event goes. Throughout the morning and afternoon

sessions students got to drive their cars in a manor they have never had before. I got to feel what it was

like to experience full on understeer and oversteer situations. By the end of the two sessions I had gained

much more knowledge and confidence on navigating my car around a track. The day proved to be a great

tool on learning how a NCCC sanctioned autocross event is done.

KCC’s low speed event took place at Harper Creek High School.

Weather was also pleasant for this event, just a little windy. A certain tent

can attest to that. The course consisted of a couple of sets of chicanes and

right and left hand sweeping turns. For those of us that had just completed

the driving school it was one of the first local events to compete in and we got

to do so against some of our instructors from the school. The Low Speed

consisted of seven events, each having two runs. This was my first

opportunity to compete in a sanctioned event and I can say I got the bug. It took a few runs on the track

to get a feel on where a good driving line was. Everyone continued to drop their lap times as the day

progressed. I continued to get better as the day went along as well. We did half of the events in the

morning then broke for a nice lunch and completed the rest of the events in the afternoon. It was a great

way to spend a Sunday, racing with a good group of people and having a great time. Thanks to everyone

that helped make this a wonderful event!

Club Throw We have one extra club

throw left. If you did not get one of these blankets and still would like to have one, ($37 includes tax) let Arlene know 269-375-8604

Introducing new members… Chris and Sherry Trautman

I am originally from Houghton Michigan. I attended Northern Michigan University 1994-1996 and

Majored in Aviation Maintenance Technology. With family roots in the southwest Michigan area I decided to move here in 1996 after college. I started my aviation maintenance career at Kal Aero which was bought out in 1999 by Duncan Aviation. While at Duncan I honed my skills on various aircraft types and finally settled on a specific brand. Like planes, cars draw you in with technology, looks, build quality, passion and soul. In 2003 I came to work at Kellogg Company at which time I bought my 1997 C5 Corvette. I have been fortunate enough to have traveled the world supporting our business missions as far away as Moscow Russia.

My Corvette affair started young. On trips to visit my Grand Parents in St Joe, if I was good, I would

be allowed to visit the 1966 and 1965 Corvette in the garage. The 66 was a black coupe and the 65 was a Nassau Blue Convertible. I remember riding on the lap of a relative in the 66 with the lap belt going across both of us. Thinking to myself how cool the car looked inside and how fast it could go, but being so young as not to know what the car make really was or how big the engine was. Years later I discovered that it was indeed a Corvette I was riding in with a big block engine. We currently know where this car is and I dream of someday bringing it back into the family and restoring in back to its former glory. It currently sits engine-less rotting in a garage for somebody else’s dream restoration. When my uncle turned 16 he got the 65 Convertible "Lucky Bugger" which he still has today.

In the midst of the dream job a collapse in 2008 in the housing market sent ripples across all job

sectors. At this time I started my Corvette website "Corvette-web-central.com". It’s a site for information and buyers guides about as you probably guessed Corvettes. Several years ago I decided to develop buyer’s guides for Corvettes using my knowledge of the current generations of Corvettes and combine that with the methodology we use in aviation to keep people safe in the skies. Our site continues to grow every day and our buyers guides are offered in many formats and have been sold around the world. Corvettes and Aviation are my passions and I love solving technical problems so like a junkie I seek out and love to help fix things.

In 2000 I met my wife while working at Duncan Aviation. As a designer of aircraft completions she

often crossed my path on the hangar floor. The silence of other mechanics stopping to observe her figure often clued me in to her approach. After some cat and mouse she finally decided I was worth a second look. In 2006 we started dating and were married in 2008. She shares my love of Corvettes and always goes to Car shows with me. She is my web designer, editor and consultant. She currently works at the West Michigan Glass Art Center located in the Park Trades Center.

Welcome back to Ron and Judy Oisten

In 1993 we purchased a 1988 Blue Metallic Corvette Coupe and in 1993 we joined the Kalamazoo

Corvette Club. We met so many wonderful friends in the Kalamazoo Corvette Club and had a lot of fun driving our Corvette to various events. One trip we will never forget was to the Upper Peninsula where Ron was in the lead with 12 Corvettes following when we got pulled over by a Michigan State Police Trooper. In November 2002 Judy transferred her job to Lansing, and in 2003 we moved to Charlotte, MI where we lived for 9 years. In December 2010 Judy retired after working 38 years and Ron retired from the Lansing Auto Auction.

During the 9 years in

Charlotte Judy got involved in Eaton County Politics, after two men in a white panel van tried to steal our two Labrador Retrievers out of our front yard. She was successful to end the sale of unclaimed family pets from Eaton County Animal Control to a broker that resold them for profit. As a result of this Judy is also mentioned in a book written by Allie Phillips (former Assistant Ingham County Prosecuting Attorney) titled “How Shelter Pets are Brokered for Experimentation: Understanding Pound Seizure”

Ron volunteered at the local nursing home driving seniors to doctor appointments, playing Flight

Simulator on his computer, flying RC airplanes and helicopters. Ron also had his Labrador, Boomer, licensed as a Pet Therapy dog where he took her to visit the nursing home in Charlotte.

In March 2008 we were honored to be invited by Mike Sikkema to tour Air Force One when

President Bush flew into Dayton Ohio. Mike attended a Corvette Driving School several years ago with Ron before enlisting in the Air Force.

In February 2012 we moved into our home in Vicksburg, which wound up being within walking

distance of our 3 year old Zoey and 5 year old Peyton. We are now able to enjoy our grandchildren and Thad and Christina love having us so close. We have been spending a lot of time working at our house and swimming in the pool lately. It is so nice to be back in Kalamazoo close to our family and friends again.
