With breathtaking European exteriors and adult themes, NBC’s “Emerald City” is most definitely not your father’s “Wizard of Oz.” George Dickie speaks with the actors who play Dorothy and the Wizard, Adria Arjona and Vincent D’Onofrio, about reimagining these iconic characters to hew more closely to the ones in L. Frank Baum’s novel.

12-13 Kaitlin Olson keeps her sassy style from “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” as she takes the lead as the unlikely guardian of her sister’s children in “The Mick,” a Fox sitcom premiering Sunday before moving to its regular slot Tuesday. Jay Bobbin talks with Olson about her new role.

14-15 With Donald Trump about to become the nation’s 45th president, Arnold Schwarzenegger is the new boss to preside over a boardroom full of celebrities on “The New Celebrity Apprentice.” George Dickie speaks with Schwarzenegger and one of the celebs answering to him, “Jersey Show” alum Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi, about their roles and how they fared.

17 A familiar sitcom concept gets a new look – but a familiar face – as veteran actress Rita Moreno is among the stars of the Netflix update of “One Day at a Time,” which begins streaming Friday. The winner of every major entertainment award talks with Jay Bobbin about making the Norman Lear-produced series when she’d never seen the original.

BY GEORGE DICKIE With sweeping European vistas, impressive special effects and dark and brooding characters, NBC’s “Emerald City” makes clear early on that this new fantasy/drama series is not your father’s “The Wizard of Oz.” Nor are you in Kansas anymore.

Premiering Friday, Jan. 6, the hourlong series, a reimagining of L. Frank Baum’s original 1900 novel, stars Adria Arjona (“True Detective,” “Narcos”) as Dorothy Gale, a young Kansas nurse who with K9 police dog Toto is swept by tornado into a fantastical land of competing realms, deadly warriors, dark magic and a bloody battle for supremacy.

It’s ruled over by the Wizard (a heavily bearded, nearly unrecognizable Vincent D’Onofrio, “Law & Order: Criminal Intent,” “Jurassic World”), a guileful monarch who has outlawed magic, antagonized a growing cauldron of witches and is faced with disaster at the hands of a mythical force. He’s a fraud trying to maintain his tenuous hold on his kingdom.

And Dorothy’s dropping into this land seemingly from the sky certainly qualifies as magic in the eyes of its denizens, thus immediately making her an outlaw. As she fights to survive in this hostile realm, she discovers her own strength and empowerment, a plot point that the actress playing her, Arjona, found attractive.

“I felt responsible for certain aspects of the script,” Arjona explains, “that Dorothy’s a very insecure and settling character and just becomes this empowered woman toward the end. And I think that journey to me was a lot

more important to showcase to little girls that you can embody yourself, you can be a strong woman.”

“I went on this journey with her,” she continues. “... (This role) was my first baby, it was my first lead in a TV show and obviously you start out a little bit scared, you start out a little bit nervous. You’re kind of unsure what is right and what is wrong and that’s the point where Dorothy kind of starts the show. And then toward the end, the crew becomes your family. The director becomes almost like your dad, your co-stars become your brothers and sisters, and you feel so much more comfortable and so much more empowered that it kind of feeds into the character itself. So at the end of the show, I felt a lot more secure of myself. I felt a little more like Dorothy, like the actual real Dorothy. I felt strong.”

Conversely, D’Onofrio – who was drawn to the project by the opportunity to work with director Tarsem Singh (“The Fall”) and a talented cast including Joely Richardson (“The Patriot”), Florence Kasumba (“Captain America: Civil War”), Oliver Jackson-Cohen (“The Raven”) and Ana Ularu (“Inferno”) – loved the idea of playing someone whose motives are not what they seem to be.

“I just took the whole idea of the original where he’s just a fake, the man behind a curtain,” he says, “and we just used that as a metaphor and we dove deep into the psychology of that and how, if we were going to examine that, how far would we go? Like, who is he to begin with? Who is he in the regular world and who does he pretend to be in Oz? ... He almost becomes the king there in a way. And who does he have to be to get that far? And so we just developed him like that.”

NEW MIDSEASON PREMIERE!

NBC reimagines Oz with epic ‘Emerald City’

Is there a wistfulness that comes with the knowledge that “grimm” is ending after this season? No. You know, I’m so busy that I haven’t even had time to think about it. You know, there’s 10 different things going on at once and because of that, I have to just focus on what’s tomorrow versus looking back at yesterday. So for an actor, it’s a good place to be. ... No time to get nostalgic.

has shooting this season is different from the others?Oh yeah. First of all, it’s only a half a season, which is great, and there was finality. So you could properly, I guess, prepare yourself for the end – emotionally prepare yourself and sort of do your goodbyes over time. And normally as actors, we don’t know the job is ending. It just ends and you don’t get asked back. Then you see people like three years later, “Oh man, I missed you. I’m sorry we didn’t get to say goodbye.” So this is different.

What has the reaction been from fans at the conventions you’ve been to?It’s very sweet. I think that they appreciate that they have been informed that it’s over versus pulling the plug and then we not come back. So I think everyone appreciates that. It’s always better to know. And also, there had been like small Twitter “Save Grimm” campaigns that are cute but we know that the show’s not ending because it’s not doing well; it’s ending because the storytelling is over. Which I think is the best way to go – on your terms.

Being on two platforms, cMT and hulu, must be heartening after being canceled by aBc last season, no?Absolutely and even more so because we never felt like we were finished in terms of what was left to tell, or in our case just saying it always seemed like there was more. So very glad, too, and of course that’s just the way of the world, now, the multiple platforms, and then you take it across internationally there’s so many different ways to watch. So we’re very, very grateful for that and we’re grateful to keep making more of these, especially originating from a home like CMT that I think understands more than most clearly what country music is all about.

Did the news of the cancelation come as a surprise to you? What I will say is that we were never one of those shows that the next season was ever promised to long in advance. So every season we were grateful for that pick-up and we never knew for sure until it happened. So when we weren’t picked up it was a little surprising just in terms of the depth of passion that our fans had. But having said that, I was nothing but grateful for the four years that we had at ABC and there would be no ‘Nashville’ had it not been for the people who stood up for us at ABC and made this TV show happen. ...I know network television is a tough game and there’s that danger, always. What it did give a chance for was for our fan base to show how devoted and committed they are to the show and not just with words but with all their actions, whether it was hashtags or signing petitions and the like, they made themselves heard. And you can’t even say it didn’t have an effect because CMT will be the first to tell you that it did, and Hulu as well. I imagine that they saw that outcry and they said, ‘There is still life in this (show).’ More than just life for us because with this new platform I think the stories we’re going to be able to tell and the places we’re going to be able to go ... being on CMT will be different than being on ABC and perhaps in ways that might be pretty beneficial.

CELEBRITY JAY BOBBIN’S Q&ACELEBRITY

As you assume – with Leeza Gibbons – the hosting of Hallmark Channel’s telecast of the Tournament of Roses Parade for the first time, what has your preparation for the event been like?

I went over the script from last year’s show a couple of months after (being chosen), along with a DVD copy of the parade, just so I could follow it. There’s so much content that you have to edit on the fly, I had to see how you weren’t married to the script and could put in your own perspective at times. That started a while ago. We’ve also met with a couple of rose experts, to talk about the different types of roses and what makes them unique and special. And there also are things to learn about equestrian teams, so we’re getting the prep there ... so that when we get to that day, we don’t have to cram and jam stuff into our short-term memories.

Both you and Leeza are “Entertainment Tonight” alums. How is it to be teamed with her?

When I found out they had decided to partner us up, I was just relieved. We both have the same pedigree in a sense, and that’s me patting myself on the back, because I can’t hold a candle to her background and what she’s done.We certainly understand broadcasting on television very well, and she’s one of the nicest people you’ll ever know, but she comes with her full game face on. Every single time. I just hope I can hang in there with her, because she’s so good.

Do you have any concerns about viewers finding the Rose Parade on Jan. 2, given its “never on Sunday” rule?

They told us of that tradition early on, and Leeza – because she’s so wonderful – immediately went, “What’s the history of the ratings for a Jan. 2 parade vs. one on Jan. 1?” We sense not only the transition that’s happening (with the hosts), but we’re also trying to remind everybody that it’s actually on Jan. 2 this time.

TASTYGEORGE DICKIE’S WHAT'S FOR DINNER

When was your last vacation, where and why?

“The last true vacation I had with no work was Disneyland with my family and that was to celebrate my high-school graduation, and that was in the summertime.”

What book are you currently reading?

“I am currently reading two books. I am reading ‘The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People,’ just because I’ve heard so many good things about it. And then I’m also listening to an audio book, and that one is ‘Grit’ by Angela Duckworth.”

What did you have for dinner last night?

“Last night, my grandma came over and then she cooked us some traditional Chinese food.”

What is your next project?

“I just got finished working with a charity called She’s the First and they sponsor girls education in low-income countries. So now I’m looking toward doing an opportunity with them in the wintertime, in January I guess.”

Everyone has to start somewhere. With Rachel Fong, it was with an Easy-Bake Oven.

Yes, the 17-year-old recent high-school graduate from Piedmont, Calif., and host of the YouTube baking channel “Kawaii Sweet World,” developed her baking skills by way of those Hasbro toy ovens with a light bulb for a baking element.

“It was just kind of a throwback to my childhood,” she explains, “and I think a lot of people connected with that because they had Easy-Bake Ovens, too. And then from there, I started getting into actual baking videos and that’s where I’m at now.”

“Kawaii Sweet World,” which debuted in December 2010 with the first of its video tutorials for making kawaii (the Japanese word for “cute”) desserts, has gained big traction on YouTube, garnering millions of views and more than 880,000 subscribers. A quick look through the channel reveals an imaginative mix of confections ranging from a giant hot chocolate mug cake and emoji macaroons to Hello Kitty cookies and Disney Tsum Tsum cake pops.

She discovered her love of baking thanks to her mother, but when she didn’t care for the desserts they were making for Dad, she began baking on her own with her toy oven. That eventually led into video production, a detour into craft videos and then the advent of “Kawaii Sweet World.”

Her skills – both video and baking – are self-taught and the recipes she prepares are her own. She shoots all her videos from the studio she created in her parents’ basement.

After taking a gap year, she’ll be off to Stanford University next fall to study possibly economics or political science, though she’s not quite sure which yet. She’s certainly gratified by the success of “Kawaii Sweet World” and wouldn’t mind continuing it into adulthood but she wants to explore what else is out there for her.

Meantime, she’s grateful what it has given her.

“It definitely validated all my hard work ...,” she says, “because I had had my channel for so long and then the baking videos really helped my channel take off. So it was definitely a great feeling because I was really shy in school, too, and then also it kind of validated me as a person because my channel really gave me a voice even while I was still really shy. So that was definitely a great feeling.”

Abbie Mills’ (Nicole Beharie) death at the end of last season on “Sleepy

Hollow” means a new co-lead for Tom Mison and a new partner for Ichabod Crane as the Fox supernatural drama returns for its fourth season Friday, Jan. 6.

She’s Janina Gavankar, a 36-year-old Chicago-area native and veteran of such otherworldly series as “True Blood,” “The Vampire Diaries” and “Arrow,” who takes on the role of Diana Thomas, a Homeland Security special agent, single mom and former military officer who will team with the 18th-century sleuth to take down the forces of evil as the series shifts to a new city, Washington, D.C.

“She’s a very modern, independent lady and a mother,” Gavankar explains, “and her priorities are, number one, keeping the world safe for her daughter. I think they see things very differently. He has a little bit more panache in the way that he handles things. She likes to just nip the problem in the bud fast. So there are a few times that they butt heads trying to pick the best way to remedy a problem.”

This isn’t the first time Gavankar has been the newcomer on an existing series, having come on board “True Blood” and “The L Word” in their fourth seasons as well. This season, much of the “Sleepy Hollow” cast is new, with a different location and setting and several new characters. And she’s happy to report the production team has been adept at rallying around the newcomers.

“I’ve been through both versions of that,” she says, “and the groups that rally around you are the ones

that have sustainable shows. And actually this year, Lyndie (Greenwood) and Tom are the only two actors that are returning, so it’s a bunch of new people. It’s five new regulars and Tom and Lyndie. So they have ushered us in with such open arms, I’m incredibly grateful for that.”

Did you know: Gavankar has the distinction of being the first actor on Twitter

“It’s probably not the most ideal thing unless you’re in your 20s and can handle that, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything. It was exactly what I wanted. I got to do what I love to do on ‘Teen Wolf,’ all the action stuff, then go and have fun on ‘Wipeout.’ To me, that’s the perfect career.” – Jill Wagner, seen recently in “christmas cookies” on hallmark channel, about having done those two series simultaneously

“Speaking for myself and my bandmates, I know that everybody’s grateful, and it’s been nothing short of a miracle that we’ve been able to have this 44-year relationship with our fans all over the world. BY JAY BOBBINKaitlin Olson hopes the forecast for her new show is as sunny as it’s been for her in “Philadelphia.”

The actress brings her sassy persona – well-known to fans of the long-running comedy “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,” now on FXX – to broadcast television in “The Mick,” a Fox sitcom debuting Sunday, Jan. 1, before it assumes its usual Tuesday slot two nights later. Also a co-executive producer of the series, Olson plays Mickey, a hustler so rough around the edges that she’s a highly unlikely candidate to become a guardian of youngsters ... yet she does, when her affluent sister is arrested and promises to get Mickey the money she needs if she’ll mind the kids.

The spoiled youths (played by Sofia Black-D’Elia, Thomas Barbusca and Jack Stanton) are full of attitude, but they quickly find they’ve met their match in their estranged Aunt Mickey, whose streetwise sensibility levels the playing field almost immediately. Also a cast regular is Carla Jimenez (“Raising Hope”) as housekeeper Alba, who becomes a major aide to Mickey, and Dave Annable (“Brothers & Sisters”) has a recurring role.

“I knew I could make this character special,” the lively and friendly Olson says, “and I was very excited to produce this, so I could cast the people I wanted and be able to give notes. You just have some creative control. Of course, as we get closer to the premiere, I’m flip-flopping: ‘Oh, boy. If people don’t like it, they will not blame the writers or anyone else. This is all on me.’ That’s just my personality, though.”

Though “The Mick” is a new project, it keeps Olson in her comfort zone, since she’s working with a number of her “Philadelphia” teammates on it: John Chernin and David Chernin are the creator-writers and serve as executive producers, as does fellow “Philadelphia” veteran Nicholas Frenkel. “That was the reason I did this,” Olson confirms. “I would have been terrified to sign onto a (broadcast-)network show otherwise, because it’s just not what I’m used to. It feels very safe.

“I really think my ‘Sunny’ fans are going to love it, and I’m really hopeful that the people who don’t watch ‘Sunny’ – or didn’t really give it a chance – will watch this show simply because it’s on Fox. It’s definitely not as risque, but it’s the same sense of humor and the same tone and a similar vibe. There’s a way to make a family comedy that’s funny and a little bit edgy, and I think we’ve pulled that off.”

As “The Mick” starts its run, Olson also will continue to be visible as anger-issued “Sweet Dee” on “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” as it begins its 12th season Wednesday, Jan. 4 ... with its 13th and 14th rounds already ordered by FXX. The wife of that show’s creator, Rob McElhenney (who’s also a star and executive producer of it), Olson finished her work on Season 12 before diving fully into “The Mick.”

“It’s so much fun for me to do ‘Sunny,’ because I’m not doing anything other than acting on it,” she reflects. “They’re long hours, but it’s only 2-1/2 months out of the year, and it flies by because we’re having such a good time. I have a lot more jobs on (‘The Mick’), so I’m doing something pretty much seven days a week. It’s much more intensive, but we’re figuring out our way, and it hopefully will get smoother and smoother.”

The Jan. 1 premiere of “The Mick” is scheduled after an NFL doubleheader, so Fox clearly is positioning it for maximum exposure. While that obviously pleases Olson, she reasons, “I just wanted it to be the show I wanted to make. As long as that part is there, whatever else happens is fine with me. It really is, but I’m very proud of this. I think it’s very funny.”

BY GEORGE DICKIEArnold Schwarzenegger can’t help but take note of the irony in succeeding Donald Trump on “The Celebrity Apprentice.”

“The interesting thing,” the actor, entrepreneur and former governor of California offers, “is that he was doing ‘The Celebrity Apprentice’ and then goes into politics, and I have been in politics and went into ‘The Celebrity Apprentice.’ ”

With Trump moving on to the White House in a little more than two weeks to become this country’s 45th president, Schwarzenegger moves into the boardroom to preside over 16 celebrities playing for their favorite charities when the eighth season of the unscripted series retitled as “The New Celebrity Apprentice” opens for business Monday, Jan. 2, on NBC.

The new season will focus on technology and Schwarzenegger will assign related tasks to a group of business-savvy celebrities including reality stars Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi, Kyle Richards and Porsha Williams; athletes Laila Ali, Eric Dickerson, Lisa Leslie and Chael Sonnen; musicians Carnie Wilson, Boy George and Vince Neil; and TV presenters Carson Kressley, Matt Iseman and Brooke Burke-Charvet.

As in past seasons, those who drop the ball in their challenges will be given their walking papers. At this writing, the former “Terminator” star wasn’t sure how he would, well, terminate the underachievers but he didn’t rule out using Trump’s famous line, “You’re fired.”

“It will definitely be one of many possibilities,” he says, “from ‘You’re fired’ to ‘Hasta la vista, baby’ ... or ‘You won’t be back’ or ‘Get to the chopper’ or whatever it may be. There are many different things that we can use and so we don’t really know exactly yet what we’re going to end up with. You know, is it going to be a different one or is it going to be the one?”

As a former competitive bodybuilder and a seasoned entrepreneur himself, Schwarzenegger can be an imposing and intimidating figure, something not lost on ex-“Jersey Shore” star Polizzi during boardroom sessions

“It was terrifying for me because it just reminded me of being back in school and I got in trouble and I was sitting in front of the principal or in front of my parents getting yelled at,” she says. “So I was terrified every single boardroom.”

Polizzi says she decided to do “The New Celebrity Apprentice” because she’s a fan of Schwarzenegger and she likes to try new things and test herself. After going through the competition, she says she came away knowing herself a little better and what her weaknesses are.

“I need to stop being so nice to people,” she says with a laugh, “so you’ll see I never really stick up for myself and I just go with the flow because I hate drama. ... So that’s probably something that I’ve learned, to just (say) ‘who cares?’ and say what you want to say. ...”

“You know, I’m used to doing reality shows where it’s just fun and you’re just hanging out,” she continues, “and this is like the total opposite because it’s obviously a competition. So it was a little bit of a challenge for me to kind of be competitive because I just wanted to make friends and enjoy the experience.”

BY JAY BOBBINAs Julie Andrews maintains what has become her New Year’s Day tradition, she’ll be in familiar company.

The widely beloved Oscar, Emmy and Grammy winner returns to Austria for her eighth stint as host of PBS’ annual “Great Performances” offering “From Vienna: The New Year’s Celebration” Sunday, Jan. 1 (check local listings). That city’s Philharmonic again will perform Strauss-family works in the opulent Musikverein, and Andrews will take in some of the local sights as usual, but there’s a reason she says the occasion will “feel just a little extra-special” for her this time.

“I’m on the board of the Los Angeles Philharmonic,” the ever-gracious actress explains, “and our brilliant maestro, Gustavo Dudamel, is the maestro for this particular concert. He’s worked with the Vienna Philharmonic before, and it’s lovely that we’re coming together on it.”

Dudamel also will leave the concert hall to make the rounds of Vienna with Andrews, and she’s not surprised that he’ll be joining her out and about.

“Every single place he travels, he manages to fit in a master class or visit the equivalent (education) system,” she reports. “He was raised in Venezuela, which has a great teaching institute for children, and he has started one in Los Angeles. He’s going to be doing some of that wonderful work at (Vienna’s) Superar, and I’ll be talking about it, so it’s very good serendipity all around. It makes this very special, because he is a glorious guy in every way.”

With Vienna State Ballet soloists also featured, Andrews has anticipation about several other guests in the program, the internationally famous Royal Lipizzaner Stallions. She’ll tour their Imperial Stables, “and that might have been a request from me,” she muses. “They had filmed them once before when Walter Cronkite was the (concert’s) host, and I just said, ‘Oh, couldn’t we go back there?’ And it’s behind the scenes, and they’re such great stables and such beautiful animals.”

Coming off a 2016 that brought her huge success as the director of an Australian staging of ”My Fair Lady,” one of the musicals that cemented her own stardom, Andrews – also seen in ABC’s recent telecasts of her screen classics “Mary Poppins” and “The Sound of Music” – soon will appear in the Netflix series “Julie’s Greenroom,” an introduction to the performing arts for preschoolers. For any and all other activities, though, she still treasures her New Year’s Day date that typically concludes with Johann Strauss’ spirited “Radetzky March.”

“It’s a tribute to Vienna, a tribute to the music and a tribute to the Strauss family,” she reasons, “and it’s a gift that PBS gives us all for New Year’s Day. And they’ve been doing it for 33 years. That’s a long time to guarantee great, quality music and pretty, lovely pictures. It’s sort of a picture postcard, really.”

Julie Andrews

If it’s

in Vienna, it must be new year’s Day

BY JAY BOBBINRita Moreno has no problem helping to generate a fresh version of “One Day at a Time”: She never saw the original show.

That isn’t to say the rare EGOT – winner of two Emmys, a Grammy, an Oscar and a Tony – isn’t a fan of the work of executive producer Norman Lear. The chance to team with him for the first time was one of the top attractions for the veteran actress in signing up for the Netflix update of Lear’s sitcom, now involving a Cuban-American family and starting its 13-episode streaming run Friday, Jan. 6.

Moreno essentially has what was Nanette Fabray’s recurring role the first time around, though she’s a full-time cast member as Lydia, mother of single parent Penelope (Justina Machado) and grandmother of spirited teens Elena and Alex (Isabella Gomez, Marcel Ruiz). And there’s still a Schneider, the Casanova-in-his-own-mind building manager and handyman now played by Todd Grinnell, succeeding the late Pat Harrington Jr. Mackenzie Phillips is a guest star in an episode, though not in her initial “One Day” role of Julie.

“I don’t think the part of the grandmother was that strong” in the original series, the ever-energetic Moreno says, “and in this one, she’s in every episode. I love playing her because she’s so ‘big.’ Justina and I just dubbed our scenes into Spanish, and I laughed so hard because I hadn’t seen anything. All I see when I’m dubbing are my scenes, but I kept breaking up. It’s a funny show, and this is a wonderful character.”

update

While “West Side Story” alum Moreno acknowledges the single-parent relevance “One Day at a Time” had during its 1975-84 run, she appreciates another theme the new version adds: “Leave it to Norman. (Penelope) is a veteran of the war in Afghanistan, and I love that, because it opens up a huge side to her character.”

It also provides major on-camera interaction with Machado, which Moreno enjoys: “Our first shot out of the box, we got big laughs, and one of my favorite things to do with Justina in the show is just to have an argument with her. We both get so Latina. The hands start to move and the eyes are flashing and the teeth are gnashing, and it’s hilarious.”

Even for the ethnic leaning of the new “One Day at a Time,” Moreno reasons that the show needs to appeal to all viewers. “That’s a fine line, and you have to be really sensitive to that, not to have other people speaking another language too much or too often ... that kind of thing. That balance is gorgeous here, but in the final analysis, it’s really about a family – one that happens not to have a husband and father.”

Soon to start recording her voice work for a new season of the Sprout series “Nina’s World,” 2015 Kennedy Center Honors recipient Moreno is coming off a holiday period when she appeared with several symphony orchestras as the narrator of “Peter and the Wolf.” She notes, “I love doing things for children. They’re so darned cute.”

BY DAN LADDAlthough the Rose Bowl is not part of this season’s College Football Playoff, it is still considered the “Granddaddy of Them All” with its own parade and fanfare. When it airs Monday on ESPN it will feature a classic Big Ten/Pac-12 matchup in the form of the Penn State Nittany Lions and the University of Southern California (USC) Trojans.

Penn State’s return to prominence is one of the big stories of the 2016-17 college football season and they’ve done it on the arm of quarterback Trace McSorley. The Nittany Lions had an amazing season, particularly the second half which saw them vault from an unranked team to place among the Top 5; coming up short for CFP after McSorley led them to a Big Ten championship.

A redshirt sophomore, McSorley won the starting job after the departure of Christian Hackenberg. He played respectably in a 24-17 loss to Georgia in last season’s TaxSlayer Bowl; nearly bringing Penn State back after a Hackenberg injury. As this season went on, he continued to develop, and the Lions entered the Top 25 after an upset win in October over No. 2 Ohio State.

With that victory the stage was set for Penn State to partially control their own destiny. They ran the table down the stretch with McSorley putting up big numbers at times, including a comeback win over Wisconsin in the Big Ten Championship game, earning them that No. 5 ranking entering the Rose Bowl. Only the Trojans stand in their way of possibly climbing higher in the final rankings of the season.TraceMcSoRley

In a way, it’s interesting that Natalie Portman wasn’t cast as Jacqueline Kennedy earlier: The resemblance is striking when the actress is done up in full first lady guise.

But then again, now is that time ... not only in matching up the ages, but also for what the movie “Jackie” demands of Portman.

It’s a profile of President John F. Kennedy’s wife in the hours and days after his assassination in 1963. Portman proves to be very up to the task of the portrait, and even though she already has an Oscar for “Black Swan,” she’s certainly on the path to another very possible win here.

Much has been made of the public image Jackie Kennedy conveyed in the wake of the tragedy, and the film is set a week later as she’s interviewed by a journalist, played by Billy Crudup (and meant to be historian Theodore H. White, who isn’t named in the movie). From that set-up, the script travels back to various encounters Jackie had, including those with major power players – such as brother-in-law Robert F. Kennedy, portrayed by Peter Sarsgaard.

For all the other fine actors on hand, though (such as John Carroll Lynch as an effective Lyndon B. Johnson and a briefly seen Caspar Phillipson as JFK), “Jackie” belongs to Portman by definition, and director Pablo

Larrain and screenwriter Noah Oppenheim are happy to hand it to her. She knows who she’s playing, but she doesn’t overplay her hand – and in re-creating such a legendary individual, that is true art at work.

Her Jackie Kennedy is sort of a steel magnolia, supposedly fragile on the outside, but with an inner reserve of strength that proves quite surprising and welcome at key moments. She could trade on

the massive sympathy being cast her way from virtually all sides, but she rises to the occasion of being her own person, though no one says that will be easy. And it surely is not in this case.

There’s also major self-awareness on the part of the new widow, since she realizes the world is watching her. Of course, she’s had plenty of experience in that by then (as the flashbacks demonstrate), but even the fact that she has submitted to the interview indicates her recognition that others are awaiting whatever she says and how she says it.

We haven’t seen much of Natalie Portman lately, relatively speaking, but “Jackie” more than makes up for that. Plainly put, it’s a great job and a surefire ticket for her to the film-award season.
