Pub Charity delivered a message to these business forum breakfast participants in Dargaville that more community groups need to apply for funding available from poker machines

Money for community ‘untapped’ by Ann Morgan

There is a large pool of money available to finance community projects in Dargaville and around the country, but too few organisations are applying for funds.

This is the advice to the Dargaville Business Forum from Pub Charity CEO Martin Cheer and his northern area manager, ex All Black Stu Wilson.

Pub Charity distributes the proceeds of poker machines back into the community and last year this amounted to more than $33 million.

“Although a lot of community groups rely on the funding, not enough groups are applying for the money which must go back into the community,” said Dargaville Business Forum chairperson Peter Boyd.

“Both speakers at our recent breakfast meeting were very inspirational with the information of how they operate as an organisation and how to tap into available resources which will add value to our wider community and economy.”

“The Dargaville Business Forum puts these events together because we are here to promote economic growth in Dargaville and the surrounding districts. The activities and goals of the community groups are part of that growth.

“What they do helps to strengthen a structure for business to grow around and attract new opportunities. There are an incredible variety of different projects Pub Charity will fund and if you miss

out the first month, the advice is to reapply as each month there are funds to give away.”

Mr Boyd said there was an exceptionally good turn out for the breakfast with more than 75 people attending.

“It was a really positive response. Stu spoke on team work and his experience within the All Blacks and his observations of how the team has progressed.

“Relating to business he spoke on three key elements of a strong team. When you are knocked down — get back

up again. Have a strong reserve bench so you always have something to fall back on and keep going, during those tight games — stay in the fight and don’t give up. All these examples can be applied to any organisation.

“The Business Forum encourages everyone to work together and show how strong we are as a community as strength brings success. Work together with common goals and communicate with each other and we will see things happen.

Welcoming new citizens

A winter surprise

Taniwha efforts rewarded

The Kaipara District Council welcomed the region’s newest citizens Tania Lean, Liza and Riaan Prinsloo, Margaretha Marinkovich, Yuth Var and Likusuosua Takulua — not pictured — on Tuesday, August 11 with a citizenship ceremony followed by an afternoon tea. Commissioner Richard Booth presented each new citizen with a young kauri tree to represent new beginnings.

Luke and Zoe Douglas who live on Baylys Coast Road had the experience of sliding around in what looked like snow last week. They woke their mum Leanne up to tell her that it had been ‘snowing’. “I thought it would just be a bit of frost but it really did look like snow,” she said.

The Rodney and Otamatea Rhino’s rugby team recently took part in a week long tournament in Kerikeri to compete for the Taniwha shield finishing fourth overall. Five players were invited to try out for the Northland Primary School team and two are in the running to play in the 2015 Roller Mills Rugby tournament held in Whangarei. Prizes were awarded at the Kaiwaka Sports Association earlier this month with Players of the Tournament going to Tyrone DeArdenne and Brady Foster.

Kauri Coast a top park by Ayla Miller

The Kauri Coast Top 10 Holiday Park has won the supreme award at the franchise annual conference, securing its position as the best out of 47 in the country.

The award is based on the park’s overall performance taking into account TripAdvisor ratings, people’s choice votes, business and sales.

The park has operated under the management of Jane and Chris McComb for two years and they say the award is quite an achievement for the relatively small park.

“We always aim to exceed our guests expectations. We set very high standards for ourselves in terms of cleanliness, service and facilities.”

The couple lived in Auckland for eight years with Chris running a plumbing and gas fitting business and Jane working in the IT industry. Jane originally has a hospitality background and holds a degree in catering and hotel management which she completed in England.

“We decided we wanted to move out of Auckland and buy a holiday park or something similar. The Kauri Coast Holiday Park offered a good lifestyle and a good business. It was already a well established successful business with scope to develop it further.

“For us it is a very beautiful natural environment. It is the sort of place that people might come to feeling a bit tired having driven from Cape Reinga. It is

CEO of Top 10 Holiday Parks David Ovendale, Jane McComb and KiwiRail Scenic Journeys and Interislander representative Derek Batchelor-Cook

such a peaceful place that they relax and end up with a smile on their face. We are surrounded by rivers so it is an alternative to a beach holiday. There are swimming holes and they can tube down the river. A lot of people see it as being safer than the sea and in a very peaceful bush setting.”

Jane says the park is gaining in popularity and credits this partly to the national tourism boom and as a result of their efforts over the last two years.

Save old library from sale by Ann Morgan

Expressions of interest are urgently needed for individual or community groups to use the Old Wellsford Library and save it from being sold. The Rodney Local Board has extended the deadline for applications until August 22.

Auck land Counc i l Properties Limited was proposing to sell this building, however after lobbying from the community the Local Board requested that this be reconsidered and agreed to look at what sustainable use could be found for it.

“We have fought to retain it because the community wanted it kept, but we need to find some sustainable use for it to achieve this,” said Local Rodney Board member Phelan Pirrie.

“It may be that it is shared, we are open to considering anything that would enable it to be used as a community asset, viably and long term.”

Anyone and everyone, groups or individuals are welcome to put in an expression of interest for a use for the building.

“In order for it to be retained for community use, whilst there is money to support the operating cost for approximately two years, beyond that the group will need to be able to cover costs themselves after that period of time.” The Local Board have asked for expressions of interests some months ago and at the end of the

time there were no expressions received so they have extended the time to see if anything comes up.

“We do not want it sold and are really hoping there will be something that will compliment what’s in town and meet a community need, especially with its unique location of being on the main road. It would be great if it was a whole community project,” said senior community development project leader Sue Dodds.

Forms and guidelines are available and anyone interested should contact Sue Dodds at [email protected] or on 021 863 32.

Applications must be in no later than August 22.

Lighting up the canvas by Ayla Miller

Emerging Mangawhai artists will soon have the chance to learn how to paint artificial light with a workshop organised by Mangawhai Artists Inc and run by artist Elena Nikolaeva on Sunday, August 23.

The workshop will explore artificial light in the darkness, twilight and how to paint glowing streetlights, shop windows and city life in the evening.

Elena has been vice president of the Mangawhai Artists Inc for two years and says she is grateful to be part of the active arts community.

She says a lot of her inspiration comes from nature, and although this workshop will focus a lot on street scenes, she believes Mangawhai’s natural beauty is the reason behind the large art circle.

“I like to experiment and explore new directions and share the results of these explorations with others.

“Those who come along to the class can expect to improve their artistic skills and learn something new,” says Elena.

Her tutoring style is individualistic in approach and artists will have the chance to learn from her one on one in a classroom situation.

Students will need to have some experience painting before and know how to mix paints.

The workshop will run from 9.30am–3pm at 60 Wintle Street, Mangawhai Heads.

Members will pay $40 and non members $45.

For bookings contact Elena at [email protected].

Calling all young leaders by Ayla Miller

The Zonta Club of Mangawhai are offering two scholarships for future young leaders to take part in the 10 day Youth Development Voyage on the Spirit of Adventure.

The scholarships have been fundraised for throughout the year with garage sales and a successful quiz night which raised $6,125.

This is the first time the Zonta Club of Mangawhai has been able to offer two scholarships and advocacy committee member Sue Poynter says this is due to the tremendous support from the community.

“The voyage fits well with the philosophies of Zonta which is to improve the status of women around the world and empower young women. I would encourage any young woman to apply if they feel they would like to develop new leadership skills, challenge themselves and to push themselves out of their comfort zone,” she says. Applications

are open to young women who are New Zealand citizens or permanent residents, aged from 15–18 years-old and live in Mangawhai, Tomarata, Wellsford, Kaiwaka, Maungaturoto or Waipu areas.

“The course builds confidence and develops leadership skills. It teaches working collaboratively as part of a team and making important decisions. Many of them form close bonds and long lasting friendships.”

Applications must be in by September 25 and forms can be requested from [email protected] or phone/text Sue on 027 555 6636 with your email address.

Wellsford’s young achiever by Ann Morgan

Wellsford Volunteer Fire Service member Liam Connolly has won this year’s Pride of New Zealand Upper North Island Regional Award for the Emergency Services category and will be going on to the national award ceremony on September 16.

The awards aim to celebrate those Kiwi volunteers, campaigners, fundraisers, caregivers and other people who go above and beyond for others.

Liam is 19-years-old and has belonged to the Volunteer Fire Service for three years and St John Ambulance for one. He says his role as a volunteer has its challenges with the different incidences he has to attend such as car accidents, house fires and other tragic events but it is all worth it and the positive aspects are great such as “when you help save someone’s life”.

He has a full-time job in Warkworth and is applying to join the New Zealand Police Force.

“I enjoy the family aspect of the volunteer positions and I want to keep it that way.

“I have always wanted to be a cop and my uncle graduated in 2013

which has really inspired me to pursue the career,” he said.

“I was naturally attracted to the fire service because both my dad and grandfather were in the service.”

Liam says he naturally cares for people and always wanted to be an ambulance driver but soon realised there’s a lot more to it than just driving an ambulance.

Calling time at Big River by Ann Morgan

Long-serving Big River FM identity Anaru Tana has decided the time has come to step aside and hand over the reigns of the Dargaville radio station he became involved with in 1997

Station manager since 2006, he says it is time to take a break and spend more time with his family.

“The station is in a very good solid position and it will be exciting to see what the future brings,” said Anaru.

“In the past five years we have trained 38 interns here. They have all gone on to be productive in what they do. That is a huge success and they all stay in contact. It has been a pleasure working with them and they are all different in their own way, just like everybody else.

“My role has not just been as manager as sometimes I am like a dad to them. You can’t get everything off the internet. Some things you need to be taught practically and balance is essential for growing.

Anaru says being told ‘no’ it can’t be done is what drives him.

“To me that makes me want to achieve what others think cannot be done and I think to myself there has got to be a way to do this. Being under-resourced is not an excuse as things can still be accomplished.

“We have worked hard to get the station to where it is at today. There is

limited financing but we have managed to progress positively.”

“As for myself, I am having a break from radio and am going to enjoy time with my family. My son Wiremu is 16 years old and finishes school next year. I have always had a desire to learn more about my culture and Te Reo Maori. I have decided now is the time for me to do that — it is long overdue.

Anaru’s last day will be Saturday, September 20.

Flag design reaction by Ayla Miller

A straw-poll conducted by the Lifestyler has come up with one firm conclusion. Let’s leave the current New Zealand flag just the way it is.

We showed the selection of 40 designs around Dargaville as the flag debate heats up and the referendum date gets closer.

New Zealanders are being encouraged by the government to have their say about which flag they would like to see representing the country and will have the chance to vote for their favourite designs between November 20 and December 11 in the first of two referendums.

However, our poll found overwhelming support for keeping the current flag, and when pressed, respondents selected their second choice with three new designs pretty much tied as choices.

These were the silver fern in black, white and blue, black and silver, and red, white and blue. However, the general

consensus centred on the cost of the flag exercise, and most of those taking in our survey felt the $26-plus million should be spent on other things such as roading, agriculture and child poverty.

“There are better things we could be spending $26 million on,” said Dargaville resident Kylie Tane. “There are more immediate problems and policies that need attention.”

The flag consideration panel will choose four designs which voters will rank from most preferred to least preferred. A second referendum will be held between March 3 and March 24 next year where voters will be asked to choose between the original or the competing flag.

Fundraising for fire station by Ayla Miller

The Dargaville Volunteer Fire Brigade are holding a quiz night on Friday, September 18 to raise funds for upcoming projects.

The funds will help the volunteer organisation to recognise 50 years of service for one of their members as well as helping to purchase a new van.

The vehicle will be used to transport food and drinks to the firefighters during long call outs and for competitions between brigades.

“The current van is getting a bit old now,” says senior firefighter Penny Searle. “It has done a really good job but it is time for a new one. It will be a community event where people from all different walks of life can come together to raise funds for an

organisation that helps everyone. We want to fill up the station so people can enjoy our facilities and there will be food and drinks available to purchase.”

They are also hoping to offer spot prizes and are looking for local businesses to sponsor these.

“The community always rallies behind us which helps us thrive and keeps the passion in the brigade.”

Those interested in making up a team of six can contact fire chief Jeff Palmer on 021 210 4254 or deputy chief Michael Ross on 022 459 4650. The event will cost $10 per person.

New hope for long-term back

IT IS PURE LOGIC AS TO HOW THE TEETER INVERSION TABLE WORKS.

After nearly eight years in New Zealand, Inversion Therapy has now gained a reputation for success with long-term sufferers of back pain.

Discs: It uses Gravity to apply traction, the traction gently opens the discs and as they open up they create suction, this suction draws fluid from the surrounding tissue back into the discs, rehydrating them. This is the key! Discs do not have their own blood supply, the rely on transfer of fluid from the surrounding tissue to keep them healthy and hydrated and over the years as discs get thinner with age, they lose the ability to take on fluid (just like squeezing a sponge) and they start to dehydrate.

Dehydrated discs are less flexible, they are harder, more prone to injury, they interfere with nerve roots creating pain and ultimately the dehydration causes degeneration. The Teeter Inversion table slowly and gently brings the hydration back into the discs, plumping them up. This brings back lost height (most people will regain around 2 CM of height), it separates the nerve roots a lot more effectively and returns quality of life.

Muscles: A lot of Pain is Muscular, when muscles are stressed they become tight which restricts the flow of blood and lymph through the muscle so toxins build up, Co2 and Lactic Acid. A reverse stretch opens up the muscles and there is a treatment on the table, which is called Rhythmic traction, which is a gentle rocking motion. This stimulates circulation and encourages blood flow through the muscles, which clears the lactic acid into your lymph system where it stimulates lymph flow and deals with it. Most people with serious neck issues see a large improvement after only one treatment.

Posture: Poor posture is one of the major cases of pain and is a major contributor to the deterioration of the body with age. A difference in leg length causes most of the hip and knee issues, as they continue to place uneven loads on the joints; much in the same way as the misalignment of your wheels on your car, they eventually wear away the wheel bearings.

Trying to correct posture is extremely difficult due to muscle memory as it constantly pulls the muscles to where they want to be. At a level of 40 degrees or more on the Teeter, the muscle groups open up and slowly come back into alignment, using the table daily, at least once a day, does not allow the memory to pull the muscles out of alignment and slowly the muscles start to lose their memory and go with the flow, allowing the body to slowly come back into correct posture. Then using the table once a day will ensure it is kept there.

This is not rocket science, it is just pure logic, if a machine is out of alignment it does not last long, the only difference between the body and a machine is the body is constantly repairing itself, however if the wear and tear on the body is greater than the body’s ability to repair itself, it is a slow decline. The Teeter slowly brings the body out of its decline and allows the body to repair itself resulting in a far healthier life.

If you are serious about investing in your health and really sorting your issues out, come see us at one of the shows, you have nothing to lose and the chances are a lot to gain.

The Teeter Inversion Table works on three levels: Discs, Muscles and Posture.

Inversion New Zealand was started eight years ago by Dave and Nancy Hare. Dave had suffered over twenty years of back pain from Degenerated Discs and had basically given up and decided to just live with it.

“To me surgery was never an option,” he said, “as long as I could still walk, there was hope.”

Dave tried everything; every time he was overseas he would search for anything that could possibly help.

While on one of these overseas trips eight years ago, Dave discovered the Teeter Hang-Ups.

“The first time I tried it, the pain disappeared and I was completely pain free for about 30 minutes, nothing had done that,” he said.

Dave never believed it would fix him, “as specialists had told me it was irreversible, I now knew I had a place to go every time I wanted some serious relief.”

To Dave’s surprise the more he used the table the longer the pain stayed away, until after nearly three months he was completely pain free.

“I couldn’t believe it,” Dave said.

“I had spent large amounts of money on every form of treatment available and here was something I had never heard

of sorting it out for me in a very short period of time.”

It was then Dave decided to introduce Teeter into New Zealand and Inversion NZ was born.

Over the years INZ have helped thousands of people get some serious relief and has seen results in not only backs, but necks, hips, knees, posture, circulation, increased height, blood pressure and lots more.

“We have testimonials from people with over fifty years of back problems and even have them in a number of schools in New Zealand for their special needs children,” said Dave. “The blood to the brain helps these kids and the results are excellent.”

What this means for the aging population is that it maintains the health of the brain as we all get older.

INZ now have a division putting them into industry as back pain costs companies a considerable amount of lost production.

Both Dave and Nancy will be attending the shows. Dave told me that he realised that, had he not tried the Teeter for himself he would still be suffering, “I would still be a miserable grumpy bugger, living with pain, that is why we do the shows, people need to try it for themselves.

Frank Harwood (84) of Turangi using his Teeter,Frank has been inverting for seven years and

has found it keeps him young

“Most people actually get off with the pain either gone or considerably less,” he said. Come along to one of the shows for a treatment, if you have completely resigned yourself to having back or neck pain for the rest of your life, the chances are you will be pleasantly surprised.

DEAR DAVE AND NANCYIn 2008 I had been living with serious lower back pain for many years due to two discs with serious degeneration and was scheduled for a double spinal fusion at a cost of $48,000. The Specialist had recommended many lifestyle changes including changing my profession, which was not practical as I own my own business. At the Waikato Home Show I experienced a demonstration on a Teeter Inversion Table by Dave and Nancy Hare. To me the effect was amazing, I actually experienced some serious relief which lasted for an hour or two; I was told that the relief would last longer with time as long as I used the table regularly, so with the surgery scheduled for 12 weeks time, having nothing to lose and a lot to gain I purchased a Teeter. Four years on I still use my table on a daily basis, my back is as strong as ever with very little or completely no pain, I am still at my same profession and working as hard as ever and most importantly I did not have the surgery. I consider the purchase of my Teeter has been one of my greatest investments, not only has it enabled me to avoid serious and costly surgery, it has kept me in my profession and it has brought my health back.Thank you very much for the opportunity.Very best regardsPaul GordonCambridge

Turning black and grey to greenThe septic tank. Hardly a thought which fills any rural homeowner with joy — but this old-fashioned and sometimes dangerously inefficient way of dealing with household waste water is as essential to the home as broadband or the refrigerator. Or is it?

and, thanks to the natural action of these soil-munching dynamos, all that comes out the other side is the liquid component.

The resulting liquid is sent through a cascade of filtration gardens, in which the natural action of plants’ root systems act as a powerful filter. We all know what makes the best fertiliser, and these filter gardens grab their share, growing green and strong. A well maintained system of this kind smells of nothing more than a verdant garden. And with no need to replace artificial pumps, filters or other gizmos, the maintenance of the Simple Waste Water Solutions system is easy, and

A D V E RT O R I A L

Not long ago, we accepted dial up modems, and before the fridge was the humble icebox. Now a new technology looks set to eclipse the septic tank — one which harnesses nature in a two-stage

process, turning household grey water and black water into an asset.

Simple Waste Water Solutions two-part system uses no electricity, unless a small (solar) pump is needed to tackle hilly terrain. Waste enters a capacious composter drum, where voracious tiger worms live up to their name, chowing down on the solid waste breaking it down by up to 95%. This means no costly pump-outs,

Green by nature and green in colour, the Simple Waste Water Solutions composter and plant filter cascade may be the end of smelly septic tanks

can be accomplished by the homeowner with minimal fuss and no specialist tools.

The savings in power, maintenance and efficiency are already mounting up, but this Kiwi invention has one more ace up its sleeve.

A complete install, rendering every drop of household waste (from both the bathroom and the kitchen and shower) can cost less than repairing that old underground septic tank. Best of all, it’s a greener way to process waste, doing away with noisome runoff and costly pump-outs, and instead relying on processes perfected by nature.

How to do better than the best by Andy Bryenton

The designers of the new Ford Ranger ute must have faced a daunting task when they sat down at the drawing board to begin work on their latest creation.

“When we set out to improve upon the Ford Ranger, we knew we had our work cut out for us: The current Ranger is one of the toughest, most capable trucks out there,” said Richard Tilley, vehicle line director, Ford Asia Pacific. “But thanks to our proud truck heritage and global expertise in the utility segment, we’ve made what was great even better, with a bold new look, improved efficiency and a new level of refinement.”

Luckily, Ford have some historical precedents to draw on. They have, in the past, bettered the knockout achievements of the Model T, GT40, and Mustang, bringing brand new ideas and technology to the game in the process. And while the 2016 Ranger does not redefine the ute market — as 2011’s game-changer arguably did forever — there’s a checklist of reasons to take a close look at this highly anticipated machine. A selection of powerplants under the hood is flagshipped by the globally proven 5 cylinder Duratorq TDCI, boasting an 18 per cent boost in fuel economy and lower emissions.

This mill churns out 147kW of power and 470Nm of torque, allowing the new

Ranger to work and play harder than its predecessor. A super efficient 2.2 litre variant and a 2.5 litre Duratec petrol engine are also options.

But it’s in the field of added extras that the Ranger truly shines. A vast suite of driver assists lead out with hill launch and hill descent control, adaptive cruise control, lane assist and even a tyre pressure monitor.

The addition of Ford’s revolutionary SYNC II system puts a suite of electronics at voice command as well as at the driver’s fingertips, and both families with kids and workmen on the move will appreciate the incorporated 240 volt socket, which can accommodate laptop chargers and even small power tools.

Last, but by no means least, the Ranger has improved design, both in aesthetics — looking tough and angular — and in off-road practicality. The new ute can wade through 80cm of water, and boasts generous approach and departure angles, all while loaded up with a tray full of gear. It’s a winning combo, incrementally building on the strengths of the 2011 Ranger and its legacy for a new generation.
