TAFE TASTERS A SUCCESS!! On Monday’s for six weeks of this term some of our Year 10 students have been participating in the Wollongbar TAFE– TVET Taster Course. Three of the students; Corey Owen, Dom Andrews and Wilson Lahoud, travel out to Wollongbar TAFE with Mr Pickard where they get hands on experience in a different area of potential study. So far the boys have participated in Automotive (worked on cars and motorbikes, wheels and brakes), Carpentry (made a CD Rack and a moneybox), Paint/Panel beating (painted a sheet of metal) and most recently Metal Fabrication where they have made the tool boxes pictured below. The boys tell us this was a wonderful experience and they would recommend for others to do it ‘if you get the chance’.

“An excellent experience, I now have an idea of what I'd like to do”

Those with good editing skills will be the sub editors and students are writing their articles in pairs for the June 19th deadline. Their articles will appear in the Northern Star on June 26th. National Rural Health Students Network Visit

The NRHSN is a national body of medical and allied health students and their visits to schools nationwide is to provide information and opportunities to Yrs 10-12 rural high school students. Their visit last Tuesday afternoon included information sessions and practical workshops. Our students were told of the varied health careers they can study at a number of universities, how to apply, the nature of study and a descrip-tion of available accommodation and snippets of life on a university campus. The workshops included having a go at the emergency plastering of an injured arm; exploring human anat-omy using “Gutsy Gus”, a plastic take-apart dummy; using medical tools to check blood pressure, heartbeat and reflexes currently used in examinations; participating in a “brain busting” trivia test for medical knowl-edge. Quite a few students attended and asked many questions of the group of young students whom they could easily relate to. They particularly enjoyed the trivia quiz and the practical sessions. Many thanks to Mrs Champion, our Careers Advisor, who organised the visit.

GIRLS KNOCK OUT HOCKEY

On Wednesday 23rd May our Girls Hockey team played against Evans River K-12 school. The girls were short of players but still managed to win 5-3 (with only 9 on the field for the whole game!) Captain/Coach and North Coast representative Abby Vantaggiato led by example controlling the centre of the field with skill and finesse AND scored two goals. She was strongly supported by fellow Academy of Sport player Jennah Hughes who was deadly in the circle with strong shots on goal and great attacking and defensive play. Jennah scored a goal too. Hollie Clark was deter-mined to play well on her 15th birthday and that she did! Another great goal was scored by Hollie. Millie Burnett

demonstrated skill and intelligence both in attack and defence and was also rewarded with a fine goal. Brooke Stevenson isn’t playing club hockey at present but definitely hasn’t forgotten how to play good Hockey (how were the muscles the next day Brooke??) and Peta Garland transferred her Soccer knowledge to the Hockey field showing determination on the wing. Our two new play-ers to the team Bridget Kennedy and Alanna Waters from Year 7 are great additions to the team, demonstrating skill and fitness. Tahlia Brice put the Goalkeeper pads on and played with confi-dence even stopping a Penalty stroke! Well done girls! It was a pleasure to spend a morning with such a great group of young sportsgirls. Our next game will be against Lismore High which will determine the Zone Champions. We will have two strong Year 11 Players Claire Davis and Tegan Elliott back from exams so LOOK OUT LISMORE HIGH!

BOYS KNOCK OUT HOCKEY

The Kadina Boys team faced a formidable opponent in Alstonville High. The Kadina team was shocked to go 1 nil down in the first 20 minutes. The Kadina Boys then scored two quick goals before half time to lead 2-1. Alston-ville scored the first goal in the second half tying the game 2-2. Both teams had competitive spirits resulting in a few strong challenges and tackles. A number of long individual solo runs by Brad Hughes created numerous scor-ing opportunities that could not be capitalised on. Kadina were the next to score to take the lead 3-2. Alstonville had numerous scoring opportunities that were held out by some brilliant goalkeeping by Daniel Sproule. After a number of turnovers by the Kadina team Alstonville were able to convert to tie the game again at 3-3. Kadina took the lead with 5 minutes remaining! Alstonville had one last scoring opportunity with 10 seconds left but hit the side of the net. Kadina held on to be the victors in an exciting physical game. Outstanding Players : Brad Hughes, Daniel Sproule, Zac Grace, Denva Blanch, Roy Finlay and Jacob Finlay. Well done boys ! Our next game will be against the winner out of Lismore High and Casino High.

MUSIC

Earlier this month two Year 7 students spent a week at Lake Ainsworth to participate in Regional Music Camp. They share their experiences below: Alanna Waters Music Camp was a great experience for me to have. It extended my knowl-edge of music to a new level completely; I learned new things like the circle of fifths, and that’s just one example. I also learnt other things like how to sweep the dining room floor thoroughly and that it can be fun, too. I had fun doing rock climbing and archery, but there was also bike riding that I could do, too. We had night games where we all joined in in a variety of games, all of them a lot of fun. I made new friends for life from different schools, all of them I’d never be able to get to know without the opportunity of music camp.

Laetitia Binetruy Music Camp was certainly a great and fun musical experience to have, considering that I have always had a love for music. I not only learnt more on the flute, but singing also. Yes, they did work you hard, but in three days you achieved so much! Music wasn’t the only thing on the program though. Recreational activities and night games were also in-cluded. We also participated in electives where you could choose what you wanted to participate in. There was rock band, percussion, show band and more. I was involved in the flute ensemble. At the end of camp everyone came together to perform a couple of pieces from their group. The concert was probably the best part because you got to see everyone up there and doing what they love. I definitely recommend music camp to anyone who is interested in music or singing. It is a camp I will never forget.

SCU Practicum Student Mr Chris Crane will be teaching selected music classes over his four week practicum period. He has already impressed students with his singing talent and musical experiences. We welcome Chris to the CAPA faculty and appreciate his assistance during the lead-up to the musical “Ma Baker’s Tonic”. He has been practising his conducting skills during band rehearsals.

He is pictured here working with 7T stu-dents on his Musical Bingo creation.

STOP PRESS!! “Ma Baker’s Tonic”, the school musical will be presented during Week 8. Tickets are on sale now at the office (see the poster).
