GONE FISHING! Tents, mezquite and ocotillo bonfires, menudo, carne asada, Argentine sausage and a

couple bottles of tequila to fight off the cold, Mexican rock band Maná, Carlos Santana,

ocean waves and Erick’s guitar fusioned to create the party atmosphere of the night of

December 10.

The next morning, expert fishermen lined up along the estuary of Santa Rosa in search

of corvinas. But apparently, these corvinas were not hungry, although they could be seen

jumping out of the water 50 feet from the shore. However, the flounders found it irre-

sistible. Although no corvinas were brought in, we sure had lots of food, music and fun.

Congratulations to the 1st & 2nd prize winners who received $ 1,350 and $ 650 pesos

cash.

Lady Gets Entire Town To Party Indeed, on December 11, Kino celebrated one of the most important holidays of the

Mexican Catholic people: The Day of the Our Lady of Guadalupe.

It is believed that it was around this time when the image appeared to Juan Diego on

the hill of Tepeyac in 1531.

As usual, the faithful pilgrims walked the streets carrying her image to all corners of

Kino and ended this tradition with the great get together that is celebrated in the Catho-

lic church of Kino. Welcoming back a Father "Pipo" as their new preist. There was

dancing, live music, children's games and lots of food

With the help of El Despertar de una Riviera, A.C. and donations from members of the Mexican,

Canadian and American Kino residents, this year’s Holiday Food Drive was a big success. In total, there

were 440 kg of beans, and 440 kg rice. These two being the main contents of the 120 bags that were de-

livered on December 24 to the “invasions” in the most marginalized neighborhoods of Kino. The bags

also contained sugar, powdered milk, vegetables, cookies , candy, flour, canned goods, toilet paper, laun-

dry detergent and vegetable shortening among other items. Those whom we considered needed it, were

invited to the visit the tourism office where they received clothing and toys.

During Santa’s visit, which lasted a little over 2 hours, we fond "Don Roberto" (see next page) who lives

in a car shell underneath an old tarp. He told us he is looking to sell his land to go and try his luck in the

south. We also found a family of 4 children, whose mother told us that, after having lived and worked in

a field in Miguel German (Calle Doce) for 17 years, they were laid off and were forced to move to Kino.

The four children include 2 year old twin girls. on another street we found a small boy who, after taking

the bag from his mother, found a carrot and began to eat it with excitement. Elderly who have been un-

able to find work, single men, single moms, teens living on their own and people with disabilities were

among those who, through the support of everyone who donated their bit, they received their Christmas

present.

It is noteworthy that the American community members residing in Kino and a few tourists joined us

with bags in hand to wish the families a Merry Christmas.

State Health Director Visits Hyperbaric Chamber Wishing to hear more about the operation and benefits of hyperbaric chamber located in Kino, and

how its use benefits the whole community, the president of DIF Hermosillo, Mrs. Marcela Fernandez

de Gándara and the Secretary of the Sonora Health Department, Bernardo Campillo, conducted a

tour of the Basic Unit of Rehabilitation.

Mrs. Fernandez stressed that the chamber was acquired and the building built to aid in saving the

lives and give treatment to divers who suffer from decompression when they dive for scallops.

They also discussed in detail other conditions that hyperbaric medicine deals with successfully, such

as gas gangrene, vascular disease, diabetic foot, osteomyelitis, among others, and mentioned the suc-

cess stories of patients who have had sessions in the chamber.

In addition, Mrs. Fernandez said that, in coordination with Conapesca, there have been courses

given to divers to avoid decompression and prevent the problem of origin, so that they are now able to

avoid it.

Kino Says “I DO” In 72 Different Voices 37 bridal veils, 37 kisses and 74 anxious faces stood out from the crowd who attended the holi-

day party held in Old Kino and organized by DIF and its President: Mrs. Marcela Fernández de

Gandara. The celebration included singing and dancing contests, gifts for the kids, cake, piñatas,

Santa Claus and of course collective marriages of couples from Kino and nearby communities.

With the presence of Third Officer registrar, Lupita Gaona and a sensational Mariachi band who

played for the couples’ first dance, 37 couples were blessed and legally married free of charge. Mrs.

Fernández de Gandara was an honor witnesse and signed marriage certificate of the couple shown

below.

“It’s Not Cold In Kino” These were the words that opened the Report of Activities meeting held the sunny morning of November 30,

2011 in Kino Bay RV Park. Present were the General Coordinator of the Tourism Development Commission

of Sonora: Javier Tapia Camou, accompanied by Javier de Hermosillo Mayor Javier Gandara Magaña, direc-

tor of the Municipal Institute of Culture, Arts and Tourism: Giuseppe Macias Beilis, the director Hermosillo

Economic Development: Javier Gerardo Moreno Durán and President of Kino Bay Citizen Council: Luis Al-

berto López Murrieta among others.

Coordinator Tapia emphasized that ".. the growth of Kino Bay is everyone’s task ..." and commented that his

department is working with Fonatur on several beach projects along the state, including Kino Bay.

For his part, Mr. Luis Alberto Lopez once again mentioned the warm winter we are having in Kino and called

it an “inviting” climate. He also spoke about the fact that our civil partnership El Despertar de una Riviera is

working on several projects for this new year.

Lastly, Coordinator Tapia said that "For many

years, Kino Bay has been 110 km (68 miles)

from Hermosillo ... (but) we just get closer and

closer" not only Hermosillo but to the entire

state of Sonora and across the borders by the

building of new roads, websites, TV spots, radio

and magazines ads and soon the reopening of

the Kino Bay airport.
