EDITOR’S CHOICE AWARDS BEST PROJECTOR INNOVATION 2017There’s no denying the JVC DLA-Z1 is an impressive piece of technology and the use of a native 4K D-ILA device and a high quality all-glass lens means it can deliver the sharpest images we have seen from any projector. The use of a blue laser light source is equally as impressive, producing incredibly bright images and the widest colour gamut that we’ve measured to date. It’s big, feature-packed and capable of delivering some lovely images, with accurate greyscale and colours after calibration and a staggering amount of detail. The video processing is excellent and the motion handling also very good, whilst the added brightness results in superb 3D images that were devoid of any crosstalk. However it was with HDR content that the Z1 really impresses and thanks to the native 4K panel, the increased brightness and the wider colour gamut the HDR images are the best we’ve seen from a projector. As a statement of intent from JVC the Z1 is certainly impressive and hopefully we’ll soon see the technology trickle down to cheaper models but in the meantime it’s our choice for the Best Projector Innovation of 2017.

Best Projector£3,000 And Over

JVC DLA-X5900

EDITOR’S CHOICE AWARD BEST PROJECTOR £3,000 AND OVER 2017JVC’s latest lower-end projector might only be a refinement of the previous generation but it’s a great reminder of what the company does so well. Although it doesn’t use native 4K panels, it can accept a full 4K/60p 4:4:4 signal and project at a resolution higher than Full HD. It also supports High Dynamic Range (HDR10 and Hybrid Log-Gamma), Wide Colour Gamut (WCG) and 10-bit video. It’s attractively designed, well made and has an excellent feature set that includes a low input lag mode, calibration controls and a motorised lens memory. If that wasn’t enough the DLA-X5900 also has JVC’s superb black levels and contrast performance and, at a retail price of £3,999, it’s our choice for the Best Projector Over £3,000 available this year.

BEST BUY AWARD IMPROVEMENTS ENSURE THIS PROJECTOR REMAINS HARD TO BEATThe X5900 also looks nothing short of resplendent with any decent-quality standard dynamic range source you throw at it. Colours are beautifully nuanced and natural. Black levels are pretty much perfect, and far beyond anything any rival projection technology can deliver. Details look crisp and clean, underlining the new-found skills of the latest e-Shift system. Motion is believable, and standard dynamic range images are bright and punchy.

HOME CINEMA AWARD BEST BUY 2017The X5900 delivers a fantastic performance with standard dynamic range (SDR) content, with great blacks and contrast ratios. The 10-bit video depth eliminates most banding and the wider colour gamut produces more vibrant and saturated colours, which the JVC was able to render with excellent accuracy. When watching SDR content the projector delivered images that were detailed and natural, with a lovely sense of depth and decent motion handling. The increased resolution, which the latest version e-shift handles very well, coupled with the wider colour gamut and 10-bit video depth do result in some excellent projected images.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED AWARD 2017We had the Sony VPL-VW360ES in for review and side by side at the same time as the X7900 and the main resolution difference is not a major issue at normal viewing distances. In fact the JVC might be faux 4K but it wins out against the Sony in just about every picture attribute. With SDR material and zoomed out completely we get an on/off contrast of 137,500:1 and zoomed in we get 47,073:1 which is very good without the DI. Measurements were taken as always with the lens at exactly 3 feet with our Klein meter and software. This removes any influence of the room and screen and gives you a clean number to work with. In HDR mode with the zoom at the maximum we get 247,500:1 and zoomed in it’s 64,259:1 and that again is without the Dynamic Iris. With the DI in use it measures black at 0.0001nits so the on/off numbers are far higher.

With SDR content the JVC is certainly the current master of this domain under the £10k price point in our opinion. The dynamic range available within the image, from the blacks to just above black detail right through to the accuracy of the colours and highlight detail is superb.

Overall the picture quality of the DLA-X7900 is exactly what we have come to expect from the JVC brand over the years with a stunning image that is beautifully cinematic and staggeringly accurate. Black levels and dynamic range are still the envy of all their rivals at this price point with an improved HDR performance over previous models putting the cherry on top of the cake.
