NAVIGATION ACTS Date:1650-1700s What it did: Controlled trade, The sugar
act, Special courts, currency act, Resentment/Stifling of colonial manufacturing.
Colonial response: Most resented it and many ignored it.

PROCLAMATION OF 1763 Date:1763 What it did: After the French and Indian
war. Issued by King George the 3rd , recognized the Indians rights to the land and could not settle west of the Appalachian mountains.
Colonial response: They were not happy.

STAMP ACT Date: 1765 What it did: Taxed everything printed on
paper so colonists had to buy stamps for paper products.
Colonial response: The colonists ignored the stamp act and boycotted all British goods until the Parliament agreed to let the colonies have representation in the Parliament.

SONS OF LIBERTY Date: 1765 What it did: A secret society that stated
that only the colonial governments should tax.

DECLARATORY ACT Date: 1766 What it did: Stated that parliament had
full authority over legislation in the colonies.
Colonial response: Ignored in celebration over repeal of the Stamp Act.

QUARTERING ACT Date: 1765 What it did: The colonists were forced to
quarter, or house and feed British soldiers.
Colonial response: The colonists resented this. New Yorkers were especially angry because most of the troops were stationed there.

TOWNSHEND ACTS Date: 1767 What it did: Made colonists pay taxes on
imported tea, glass, paper and other items to pay for military cost.
Colonial response: The colonists again boycotted goods imported from England. English imports were cut in half during the boycott.

BOSTON MASSACRE Date: 1770 What it did: British Soldiers arrive to
enforce the Townshend Act. Colonists gather and begin to throw snowballs, ice, and rocks at the British soldiers. In the heat of the moment a soldier hears the word ‘Fire” and the Redcoats shoot into the crowd killing 5 people.

TEA ACT Date: 1773 What it did: The East India Tea Company
would have a monopoly for tea trade in the colonies. (They would be the only company allowed to sell tea to the colonies.)
Colonial response: Colonists fear that England may grant monopolies on other products.

COERCIVE ACTS Date: 1774 What it did: Four of the acts were issued
in direct response to the Boston Tea Party. The other act enlarged the boundaries of what was then the colony of "Canada“.
