No más Silencio frente al Abuso Emocional P ort Townsend, WA—Rodeadas por aguas cristalinas y las montañas de la Península Olímpica, las mujeres del Círculo de Justicia de Dove House se apoyan unas a otras en el proceso de sanar del abuso sufrido. A pesar de que sus historias son diferentes, hay un elemento común – sus experiencias de abuso emocional no fueron reconoci- das por algunos profesionales, el sistema legal, su familia o la socie- dad. Todas han reconstruido su vidas después de años de ser saboteadas y degradadas por sus parejas. El Círculo ha sido un proceso de transformación para cada una de ellas, y como dijo una miembro del Círculo: “Sé que no estoy sola en mi pasión y deseo de crear paz y seguridad en mi hogar y relaciones; estas son metas compartidas y valoradas por todas y estamos trabajando para lograrlo”. Juntas están abordando este tema para que otras mujeres no tengan que sufrir en silencio la vergüenza del abuso emocional. Together they are addressing this issue so others do not have to suffer through the silence and shame of emotional abuse. The women began their Emotional Abuse Awareness Campaign by organizing a panel called “Emotional Abuse: Define. Acknowledge. Prevent.” The panelists included a domestic violence advocate/ therapist, a child therapist, the deputy police chief and a survivor of emotional abuse. The panel attracted an unusually large and diverse audience and ignited a vital conversation which named that emo- tional abuse does happen in the community and needs to be addressed. Their accomplishment has fortified the women’s determination to educate and train the community and professionals. The Circle plans to broaden the Awareness panel llamado “Abuso Emocional: Definir. El Círculo tiene previsto ampliar la campaña de sensibilización a todo el condado de Jefferson con más eventos educativos y la capacitación de profesionales, tales como la policía, empleados de la corte y proveedores de salud. Breaking the Silence about Emotional Abuse
Port Townsend, WA—Surrounded by pristine water and the mountains of

Empowering Emerging Leadership
Spokane, WA— Giselle Cárcamo, Justice for Women Coordinator, is facilitating new regional interactive
Spanish leadership training workshops for emerging leaders. Storytelling, movement and co-created narratives are used to walk together through the five practices of leadership: purpose, vision, partnership, resourcefulness and performance.
Last fall, the Intercommunity Peace & Justice Center partnered with the Rainier Beach Community Center, Seattle; St. Vincent de Paul Parish, Connell; and Casa La-tina, Seattle for these unique two-hour Spanish-language workshops designed to empower Latina leaders.
Capacitación para Lideresas Emergentes
Spokane, WA—Giselle Cárcamo, Coordinadora de Justicia para la Mujer, está facilitando nuevos talleres interactivos
de capacitación de liderazgo para lideresas emergentes. Téc-nicas narrativas, movimiento y narraciones creadas en equipo están siendo utilizadas para practicar juntas los cinco pasos del liderazgo: propósito, visión, compañerismo, resiliencia y realización.
En otoño pasado, Intercommunity Peace & Justice Center se asoció con el Centro Comunitario de Rainier Beach, Seattle; la iglesia de San Vicente de Paúl, Connell; y Casa Latina, Seattle para facilitar talleres en español de dos horas de duración diseñados para capacitar a lideresas latinas.

El Círculo, en colaboración con la Municipalidad del Rímac, organizó la primera “Conferencia de Sensibilización y Estrategias contra la Violencia de Género” conferencia diseñada para educar a la co-munidad del Rímac sobre la prevención y denuncia de casos de violencia de género. Diversas autoridades no sólo felicitaron la iniciativa de la sociedad civil si no que participaron como ponentes en dicha con-ferencia. Entre ellos destacan, el alcalde del Rímac, dos congresistas de la república, autoridades locales del Ministerio de la Mujer y la Comisaría de Familia, psicólo-gas, trabajadoras sociales y directoras de organizaciones que trabajan en contra de la violencia de género.

Peruvians Challenge Gender-Based Violence
Lima, Peru—In the district of El Rímac, a group of enthusiastic women leaders,
who are very committed to their commu-nity and church, decided to take a more ac-tive role in fighting gender-based violence in their community. Upon discovering that many cases of families and women report-ing abuse have not been well received by the local authorities, these leaders decided to guide and inform people going through this difficult situation. They have reached out to collaborate with other institutions and agencies working against gender vio-lence in neighboring districts.
In partnership with the Municipality of El Rímac, the Circle organized “Build-ing Awareness and Creating Strategies to Prevent and Respond to Gender-Based Violence,” a conference designed to educate their community to prevent and report gender-based violence. Several lo-cal authorities not only applauded but also participated in this initiative, including the Mayor of El Rímac, congresswomen, policy makers, local authorities, psychologists, social workers and heads of women-led organizations.
The Circle´s task has just begun. They have decided to continue working with women, men and families who suffer from violence, and are coordinating with other agencies and authorities to propose gen-der-based violence prevention programs.

glés) en Spokane, las residentes se reúnen para discutir la seguridad peatonal de los escolares de la zona. La escuela primaria está en construcción, por lo que se trans-porta a los niños en autobús a las escuelas cercanas. Como la escuela del vecindario no está en sesión, el tráfico mantiene un ritmo constante de 35 millas por hora, incluso cuando los niños caminan a las nuevas paradas de autobús, cruzando
arterias llenas de autos que se dirigen al centro de la ciudad.
El Círculo de Mujeres para la Justicia de TLC decidió expresar esta preocupación y evitar que ocurra una tragedia en su co-munidad. Ellas testificaron ante el Comité de Transporte y Tráfico Peatonal y ante los concejales de la ciudad sobre la necesidad de mejorar la seguridad peatonal. Su testi-monio no cayó en oídos sordos. El Círculo

They testified in front of the Pedestrian Traffic and Transportation Committee and their city council representatives about the need to improve crosswalk safety. Their testimony landed on eager ears. The Circle was thrilled to hear the actions the council would take: three schools, including Finch Elementary, the school the TLC children attend, will have traffic cameras and $124 fines for speeders!
The women are finding more than just a willing audience for a safety is-sue. They’re finding strength through each other and within themselves. “The Circle makes me think about wholeness, self-care, self-love and love for others and humanity. Uprising of Hope in Tanzania
Handeni, Tanzania—The tem-peratures are rising in Tanza-
nia along with the confidence and spirits of the 25 Women’s Justice Circles of Handeni. The women are overcoming personal and
cultural barriers, never missing meetings and setting in motion a cascade of actions throughout the region. Some Circles hold small collections at each meeting as start-up capital for individual members to start small businesses. Another Circle started a nursery school, enlisting a volunteer teacher and enrolling 35 children. Through a partnership with the Women´s Center for Communication & Development (CE-WOD), the Circles lobbied their district for health budget transparency. They formed the Handeni Women Circles Co-alition (HAWOCCO), which advocates for improvement in maternal health services

Handeni, Tanzania—Las temperatu-ras están aumentando en Tanzania
junto con la confianza y el ánimo de los 25 Círculos de Mujeres para la Justicia de Handeni. Las mujeres están superando barreras personales y culturales, nunca faltan a las reuniones y están poniendo en marcha una serie de acciones en toda la región. Algunos Círculos hacen una colecta de pequeñas cantidades de dinero en cada reunión como capital inicial para que sus miembros inicien pequeñas empresas. Otro Círculo comenzó una guardería, reclutaron a un profesor voluntario y 35 niños se inscribieron. A través de una alianza con el Centro Femenino para Co-municación y Desarrollo (CEWOD por sus siglas en inglés), los Círculos presionaron a su distrito para que haya transparen-cia presupuestaria en el sector salud. Formaron la Coalición de los Círculos de Mujeres de Handeni (HAWOCCO por sus siglas en inglés), que aboga por la mejora de los servicios de salud materna y está desarrollando programas educativos cul-turalmente apropiados para promover el liderazgo de las mujeres.

Port Townsend, WA—Rodeadas por aguas cristalinas y las montañas de la
Península Olímpica, las mujeres del Círculo de Justicia de Dove House se apoyan unas a otras en el proceso de sanar del abuso sufrido. A pesar de que sus historias son diferentes, hay un elemento común – sus experiencias de abuso emocional no
fueron reconoci-das por algunos profesionales, el sistema legal, su familia o la socie-dad. Todas han reconstruido su vidas después de
años de ser saboteadas y degradadas por sus parejas.
El Círculo ha sido un proceso de transformación para cada una de ellas, y como dijo una miembro del Círculo: “Sé que no estoy sola en mi pasión y deseo de crear paz y seguridad en mi hogar y relaciones; estas son metas compartidas y valoradas por todas y estamos trabajando para lograrlo”. Juntas están abordando este tema para que otras mujeres no tengan que sufrir en silencio la vergüenza del abuso emocional.

Breaking the Silence about Emotional Abuse
Port Townsend, WA—Surrounded by pristine water and the mountains of
the Olympic Peninsula, the women at Dove House Women’s Justice Circle walk together on their journey of healing from abuse. Even though their stories differ, they recognize a common thread—their experiences of emotional abuse were not acknowledged by some professionals, the legal system, their families or society. The women all have healed themselves after years of being sabotaged and degraded by their partners.
The circle has been a transformative process for the women, in which they each now know “that I am not alone in my passion and desire to create peace and safety in my home and relationships, and that these are shared and valued goals we are working towards” (Circle member). Together they are addressing this issue so others do not have to suffer through the silence and shame of emotional abuse.
The women began their Emotional Abuse Awareness Campaign by organizing a panel called “Emotional Abuse: Define. Acknowledge. Prevent.” The panelists included a domestic violence advocate/therapist, a child therapist, the deputy police chief and a survivor of emotional abuse. The panel attracted an unusually large and diverse audience and ignited a vital conversation which named that emo-tional abuse does happen in the community and needs to be addressed.
Their accomplishment has fortified the women’s determination to educate and train the community and professionals. The Circle plans to broaden the Awareness

Empowering Emerging Leadership
Spokane, WA— Giselle Cárcamo, Justice for Women Coordinator, is facilitating new regional interactive
Spanish leadership training workshops for emerging leaders. Storytelling, movement and co-created narratives are used to walk together through the five practices of leadership: purpose, vision, partnership, resourcefulness and performance.
Last fall, the Intercommunity Peace & Justice Center partnered with the Rainier Beach Community Center, Seattle; St. Vincent de Paul Parish, Connell; and Casa La-tina, Seattle for these unique two-hour Spanish-language workshops designed to empower Latina leaders.
