Without intervention, youcan sequentially run up to twelve 10- or 20-mLsample vials—using anyone of four methods thatyou store in the sampler. Methods may be linked for optimum throughput.

Headspace sampling is highly efficient in intro-ducing volatile compounds from almost anymatrix into a GC. This technique makes easywork of samples that have:

• A solid or extremely viscous matrix—preventing direct injection

• Liquids that require preparation beforeinjection

• Vapor as the target of interest, such as for perfumes.

The procedure is simple. In many cases, all you have to do is place the pre-measuredsample in a vial, seal the vial, and heat thesample. This is one of the fastest, cleanest, and easiest sampling techniques.

Headspace Sampling: Ideal for Most Samples

Headspace sampling is ideal for mostlaboratories. This technique —samplingthe gas above a sample held at a con-stant temperature in a sealed vial—works for virtually any type of matrix.

Sample preparation can be as simpleas sealing the pre-measured samplein a vial. This saves considerable timeand eliminates or reduces solvents.

And because gas sampling is cleanerthan liquid sampling, the injectionport requires less maintenance andcolumns last longer.

Until now, however, headspace samplers have been too feature richfor many laboratories.

Not any more.

Agilent Technologies’ 7694E head-space sampler is an inexpensive, simple-to-use, and reliable headspaceunit. With all the quality and reliabilityyou expect from Agilent, the 7694Eheadspace sampler offers just thefeatures you need—at a price to fityour budget.

Designed for optimum value, thisheadspace sampler provides:

• Low capital and operating costs

• Constant heating time for assuredrepeatability

• An inert nickel sample path that protects against sample carryover, loss, or degradation

• Automation for processing up to 12 samples unattended.

Simplicity Makes It Reliable andEasy to UseThis standalone unit offers justenough features to meet mostlaboratory needs:

• Rugged construction and simplicity

of design for continuous operation

in almost any environment.

Agilent instruments are tested underextreme conditions to ensure theirreliability.

• Easy-to-use controls for minimal

operator training. A simple, easy-to-use keypad lets you quickly setsampler parameters and store meth-ods with the push of a button. Youcan also link up to four methods forexpanded flexibility.

• Interface to any gas chromatograph

for maximum flexibility. You can use the sampler with any GC.Because all Agilent instruments aredesigned to work together seamlessly, you can enjoy optimum performancewhen it is coupled with any Agilentchromatograph. When you combinethis sampler with the low-cost,Agilent 4890D GC, you gain a power-ful yet affordable system that can analyze volatile compounds in virtuallyany matrix.

• Constant heating time, one vial at

a time, for assured repeatability.

Samples with the same parametersreceive exactly the same treatment.

• Automatic parameter increments

for easy method development.

You can set either the oven tempera-ture or vial equilibration time inincrements to determine optimumsampling parameters.

• Vial shaking for more

representative sample results.

This feature can help homogenizesamples or dissolve salts.

Results are reliable and consistent.

Rework is minimized.

Laboratory productivity rises.

1 Put a known amount of sampleinto a headspace vial (istd, salt,or pH-adjusting reagents, ifrequired).

2 Crimp vial cap.

For the Agilent 7694E headspacesampler, repeat up to 12 times.

3 Place a vial in the Agilent 7694E headspace samplerand push the button marked “Start.”

3 Heat the sample and wait for equilibration.

4 Sample using a gas-tightsyringe (preferably heatedat or above the temperatureof the sample for greaterprecision).

Manual sampling techniquesare simple and inexpensive. They are also tedious and subject to human error. Auto-mation, in contrast, ensuresconsistent and reliable results. It also frees laboratory person-nel for more productive tasks.

The Agilent 7694E headspace sampler is the

sampler to buy for low cost and high value.

Automation Gives Fast, Consistent Results

To ensure that our products meetexpectations, provide maximumuptime in your laboratory, and offerprecise, accurate results, we give rigorous attention to detail in everystep of the manufacturing and testingprocess.

We design, build, and test ourinstruments to comply with industrystandards for safety and electromag-netic capability. Such standardsinclude those of the CanadianStandards Association (CSA), theInternational Electro-technicalCommission (IEC), the EuropeanCommunity (CE), and the Inter-national Special Committee on Radio Interference (CISPR).

We also perform many additionaltests to ensure proper operationunder power fluctuations andextremes of temperature, humidity, and vibration.
