What is a “Just Right” book?

A “Just Right” book is a book that isn’t too easy, and not too hard.

When you read a “Just Right” book, you understand what you are reading.

When you read a “Just Right” book, you feel emotions.

When you read a “Just Right” book, you can read most of the words.

You can take AR tests on these books.

Too Easy (old favorite) Book

• A “too easy” book is one that you can read without having any words to work through.

• A “too easy” book is an old favorite from Kindergarten or First Grade.

• A “too easy” book is so easy it is boring.

These books are OK to read for fun, but should not be all you are reading.

Never take an AR test on one.

Challenging Books• A “challenging book” has too many words you can’t read.• A “challenging book” has too many words you can read, but

don’t understand.

You can tell a book is too challenging if you read the first page and you count more than 5 words you can’t read or understand.

It’s ok for an adult to read a “challenging book” with you or to you.

Sometimes you will have a “challenging book” in reading groups. Your group and teacher will support your reading.

Get permission to take an AR test on a “challenging book”.

• Find a book at your table.

• Read the first page(s).

• Decide and write the title on your chart.

Too Easy Just Right Challenging

Make a chart in your Daybook to record the books you check out. Try to find at least one book for each category.
