———–—–-——-——Blue-Gray Breweriana Show February 16-19 2005-——–———————

It all started with me picking up Jeb Burruss Wednesday and heading straight to the show. We arrived at 10PM that

night and we would be sharing a room with Gary “$5 Bag” Deachman. Now I will say handling Gary when he was

on the “medicine” is pretty trying but you throw in Jeb on the “medicine” and I was basically tag-teamed for 3 days.

The first night we stayed up until 1AM as Gary finally talked me out of my M-1-26 Voigt (I am very sorry Michigan

collectors) as he traded me seven little old miscellaneous openers (2 C-1s, 2 C-2s, 2 E-19s, and a B-6). Gary was

very happy as now the only M-1 he needs is a M-1-7 King’s Malt Chremal. It got the show off to a fast start for me

but as Jeb found out, the show has lots of breweriana but the good openers are fairly scare. I did get a C-17-37 Lar-

gay and a couple of openers from Ken Ostrow. I had to depend on Larry Moter for my other “big trade” at the show.

Jeb and I went to Larry’s house Friday morning and I gathered up a pile of 7 openers I needed from Larry and he

picked out 9 he needed from me. Jeb figured it would take all morning for us to trade out. Larry picked one from

my pile and I picked one from his pile. I said okay and started to grab a second one when Larry said, “what the heck,

pile for pile” and we were done. My kind of trading. The show saw lots of JFO members in attendance (too many to

list) and it was great time had by all even though Jeb and I got into a shouting match about eBay on Friday night and

it didn't matter in the end as the “Truck Driver” got the opener anyway. Gary was a great referee. Jeb and I returned

home Saturday evening and he spent the night and of course had to buy a few “good ones” from the collection. He

flew out the next day and we all three agreed to do it again next year.

———–—–-————“On the Road” with Mike Krejci “The Truck Driver”——–———————

This report begins with a month long trip. Starting January 16th I traveled around the country with two small cranes.

I started in Chicago and generally speaking made a big circle. Stops were made in Nashville, Birmingham, New Or-

leans, Houston, San Antonio, Corpus Christe, Dallas, Oklahoma City, Albuquerque, Phoenix and Las Vegas, along

with several smaller towns. This was a "demo" tour showing off the machines. There was a three day show in San

Antonio, so I had a chance to do some sightseeing. I especially liked Riverwalk. Lots of good restaurants to choose

from.

The high lite of this trip was being able to spend some time visiting with John Burress. He showed me around the

country and Saturday evening we went to a great place for supper. The name of the place escapes me now. Then we

went to a local bar for some refreshments. There was live music a plenty of "eye candy" that I think my eyes caught

diabetes. I told JEB that I was born and raised in Wisconsin and pretty much figured that's were I'd stay.....but after

visiting Tavern on The Green, I was considering relocating. Sunday we visited a flea market. I found two Q type

openers along with a G-32 Miller. I was able to purchase four nice openers from John. I got an A-15 Schreirer, a L-1

Knickerbocker, a B-24 Fleck's and A I-20 Pearl.

The rest of the trip did not turn up any good beer openers. But I was able to add four Hard Rock Cafe openers to my

collection. I picked up one from Houston, San Antonio, Salt Lake City and Las Vegas. If anyone out there is near a

Hard Rock Cafe I'd appreciate hearing from you. I might need an opener. In addition I also added 10 openers from

states or places I visited. This part of the opener collecting bug I caught from Art Santen.

Thanks to Ebay I was able to add some nice openers to my collection. Most notable was an A-24 Miller, A-57 Blatz,

N-43 Schlitz, P-8 Heileman, M-21 Rainier, D-11 Hagerstown,F-1 Geo. Bocher,N-38 Leinenkugel, P-19-UL Sach's

Pure Malt and an A-29-UL Wald Rose Everything for The Home Brewer. In some cases I might have 18 wheeled

over a fellow collector, but as I've heard at live auctions "there are no friends at auctions" That being the case I still

hope we are friends.

Also of note this past quarter was a visit to the Yuengling Brewery in Tampa. Of the big breweries I've visited of late

this was the most enjoyable. Even though they are the fourth largest brewer in the US, they retain the small time fam-

ily run business atmosphere. What was really neat on this tour was the fact that we were allowed to take one of our

two complimentary beverages along on the tour. So we could enjoy the beer while learning how it was made. I did

buy two openers in the gift shop to add to my collection.

All in all a good past few months. Till Omaha Bye!

Spouse’s Corner By Pat Stanley, the Editor’s Spouse

Two weeks from tonight we will be packing the car to head West, 1200 miles West. We leave on the 9th of

April. Going out won’t be too bad as the first night we will stop in Nashville to stay at the site of the 2006 JFO Con-

vention. That will be our longest drive on the way out. Then stop in the O’Fallon, MO to see Ollie and Shirley Hib-

beler. Next off to Jefferson City, MO to see Harriet Waldo and John Burruss (JEB). And finally arrive in Omaha on

Tuesday the 13th.

When we sadly leave JFO 2005, John thinks we can make it home in two days. Sometimes he forgets that

we, like his openers are getting older! Maybe we can just load our vehicle into Mike Krejci’s 18 wheeler and hop a

ride home. I’m sure John must have something he could bribe Mike with…oh…probably not…Mike keeps running

John over on eBay.

I’ve been reading back over the 2001 newsletters and there’s not much interesting to report other than

Spouse’s Corner. The rest is all dry openers. John and I agreed that we are going to have to figure out a new project

for my contribution. It will have to be easy as my new job…now a year old…is still keeping me very very busy.

I am listening to the UNC Villanova game as I write. I don’t even know the rules, but I understand how to

read the scoreboard. NC State and Duke already are out of the Sweet 16 and UNC isn’t doing very well. It’s in the

2nd half and UNC has never led in the game. Oh…just as I typed that, we went 2 points ahead. If you see a “Go

Heels” in this article, just overlook it!

OK, Pat focus…in the January 2001 newsletter, Bob Stahly told about a very unusual Coca-Cola wall mount.

He said they were made in the late 50’s by A.J. Hunt and Son in Kangley, Illinois which is a suburb of Streator.

Now we have been in Streator and a suburb??? I don’t think so. The biggest thing in Streator is the big basement

Bob dug by hand for his collection. (When John read this, he told me that actually Bob made all of this up. In my

review of 2001 I remember another article where John had concluded that Stahly’s initials really stood for BS. I con-

cur, but we still will be very glad to see him in Omaha along with his dear wife Marge.)

The battle between Dave Pinney and Jeb Burruss was included in the January issue. Pinney won. It turns

out that his father organized Pinney Beverage Co. in Salt Lake City. Nineteen years later his father was killed in an

auto accident. His mother continued in business until 1955 when Budweiser decided that a woman couldn’t operate

a beer distributorship and gave the franchise to a man. The business folded in six months. My math says that his

mother ran it 5 years. UNC up by 5. Go Heels!!

The April 2001 issue included pictures of Corkie the Yorkie Stanley and Bailey Young….who was a brand

new puppy. Both are coming to Omaha along with Bailey’s sister Munchkin. It sounds like Bailey and Munchkin

travel better than Corkie. She will be okay after the first day after she is convinced that she really isn’t going to the

vet’s.

In July 2001 I was still sharing a computer with John. I bet it was a 90-10 arrangement. Sure glad I got my

own computer!! His mouse is set to click super fast on eBay pictures. Makes me dizzy to use it.

In John’s write up about the 2001 Convention in St. Jo, MO he was complaining about the time I take to put

on my make up. When we fly he tries to get me to check my cosmetic case. Sorry John, you better leave room in the

Expedition for my cosmetics and time in the schedule to put my make up on!!

When you read the July 2001 issue, you “re-live” the “near death” choking experience John Mlady had in St.

Jo while Deachman continued to eat and talk. So glad John is still around to host this convention!! Go Heels!!

Thom Thompson sent in an article on Dave Gausepohl’s collection that appeared in the Lexington, Ky news-

paper. At that point he had more than 400,000 beer related treasures in his home. I don’t even know what to say

about that!! Speechless!! Or is that Spaceless!!

As I browsed through the convention pictures, I started asking John…Is so and so coming to Omaha?? We

finally decided that he just needed to email me the list!! 33 Members so far!!

Shirley Hibbeler didn’t like the picture of her dozing at the auction (tired from gambling). I certainly under-

stand. I have unsuccessfully attempted to edit out some of me. I think it’s revenge for not approving of “all” his pur-

chases….one recent one comes to mind that cost a “few” hundred. Few made me go Whew. I’m sure John is still

disappointed that I was home when UPS arrived with that one.

Speak of the truck driver, Mike Krejci. He submitted his story for the October issue. Most stories about how

the hobby got started have some correlation to the hobby. Not so with Mike. He really got into openers when he

PAGE 3 JUST FOR OPENERS APR 2005 ISSUE #106

stopped at an antique shop to look for pig shaped cookie jars. Well, maybe it is related…now he tries to hog all the

openers!!

40 seconds to go. UNC up by 3. Go Heels!! Oh my…Villanova is at the foul line.

I won’t be able to email this article to John until he watches the recorded game. He’s dreaming of openers.

In Ollie Hibbeler’s article on the ABA in Charlotte, NC, he had to give up a good opener to John in a trade as

“that John has a photographic mind”. If they ever did a brain scan, they would only see opener images.

1.8 seconds and UNC only up by 1. More stress than an opener trade. CAROLINA WINS!!!!

This is all pretty funny coming from me. My office is just down the street from the Dean Dome where bas-

ketball is played. Twice when we had evening games on week nights, I started down the street towards the Dean

Dome (my route home), totally unaware that it was a game night and had to make a big u-turn right in the middle of

the street and go through a maze of back roads to get home before John had received still yet another package of

openers, cleaned and polished them. Lately, about every time I hit the garage door opener, the door opens only to

expose Mr. Clean polishing his latest acquisition in the garage. I am signaled to stay out in the drive until he vac-

uums up all the little wires. Those are the wires he has told me couldn’t possibly land on the hood of my vehicle!!

Well, better get some sleep. Have a long, long drive coming up. See You in Omaha!!

prohibition opener manufacturers of the U.S.

Great letterhead with a showing a B-21 style

PAGE 21 JUST FOR OPENERS APR 2005 ISSUE #106

This quarter on eBay certainly saw many good openers

(and corkscrews) sold. For most JFO members it was just

a question of, “Did the Truck Driver (Mike Krejci) want

it?” If he did, you don’t have enough money in the world

to beat his top bid (I was a victim several times). Any-

way as is the usual case, there were enough good items

that everyone should have gotten something they wanted.

Lots of good “A”s sold with the highlights being an A-9-

34 White Eagle at $112.51 (in nice condition), an A-16-6

Goetz at $125.00 (the Missouri boys chased Jeb hard on

this one), two different A-17 Dr Pepper openers at

$251.50 and $382.87 (several have turned up eBay and

they all bring good money), an A-43 Coca-Cola from

Waterloo IA went a little cheap at $184.49, Mike ran over

Jeb for the A-47-1 Krug at $231.49 and finally an A-53

Coca-Cola ballerina legs with a ginger ale ad saw very

spirited bidding before selling for $238.50. A couple of

side notes on the A-5-69 Atlantic City that sold for

$89.00. A few years back, Larry Moter, found two from

one dealer at a Richmond Antique Show and I know of a

couple of others turning up. Maybe this was the first one

offered on eBay as $89.00 seemed high. Also “Mr.

Minnnesota”, Pat Stambaugh, beat Jeb out on the A-1-

107 Engesser (with a split key ring) at $94.99. It looked

pretty rough but amazingly was an upgrade for Pat on the

one he had. I would hate to see what it looks like.

“Brass “B”s” were not too exciting this quarter (except

for the B-1-12 Forrest City), but several nice “B-5”s were

sold and I decided I really wanted a B-14-UL Virginia

Brewing (thinking it was from Roanoke VA). Of course

the serious Virginia collector made me pay ($103.51) and

several collectors questioned where it really was from.

There were two possibilities, Virginia Brewing of Roa-

noke VA or Virginia Brewing of Virginia MN. Either of

the two states have serious collectors, but after contacting

Bob Kay (the foremost beer label collector in the country)

and he sending out several inquiries, no luck on which

brewery actually put this opener out. Please check the

picture (Page 29) and if you have a good idea, please let

me know.

The Tennessee boys really wanted the B-18-315 Tennes-

see Brewing with it realizing $132.50. Then we reach the

stratosphere when a B-24-56 Salem goes for $585.00. As

John Cartwright pointed out to me, the winning bidder

had an eBay web page and on it he claimed, “if it is from

Salem Oregon and being sold on eBay and I need it, I

never get beat out”. Obviously someone was out to get

him and ran him up badly on an opener that usually costs

$20.

Several nice “C”s were sold this past quarter but nothing

bringing high prices. Even CBOs have seen to slow

down in price. Cast iron, “D” types, have seen the for-

eign market flooded but every so often the openers with

an English patent will see a spike in price and I assume it

must be from a tough brewery. The once hard to find D-

11-1 Hagerstown was sold twice and both times at current

value of $50-$60.

Wire openers, “E” types, saw some good brewery names

offered for sale. Once again nothing too eye catching

except the E-5 Dr Pepper bringing $262.00 (it was in nice

shape). The other highlight was your Editor hearing the

horn sound just before Mike ran me over again with that

darn 18 wheel truck as he really wanted the E-28-2 Gund

at $116.49. Several nice “F” types were offered and most

brought reasonable prices, but I was very surprised at the

F-9-5 National only bringing $42.00. I have one and

have seen one other so $42.00 was a very good buy. I did

beat out Pat Stambaugh on the F-9-9 Schells (and boy did

it take a lot of cleaning to make it look decent) as I

needed it for my convention display.

Figural bottle openers saw a lot of activity on the low end

and not many good ones were sold. The “Skull” keeps

being offered for sale and low prices seem to reflect the

over abundance or lack of interest. “G” types were high-

lighted by the sell of some nice G-1 Pepsi=Cola openers.

Once again another area of the market (Pepsi openers)

that has languished the last couple of years on eBay.

“H”s were highlighted by the H-2 Pepsi=Cola from Roa-

noke going for $70.00 (I wanted it to go with my H-2

Coca-Cola opener from Roanoke). The H-11-12 Miller

rarely is offered for sale and being the only H-7 or H-11

showing a bottle brought spirited bidding before finishing

at $46.55.

Now we come to the “Bar Mounts” or “K” types. Two

good Blatz “K”s were sold, a K-9 and a K-11 and both

brought reasonable prices. The highlight was that darn

18-Wheel truck which never runs out of gas (I mean cash)

blowing a fellow JFO collector out of the water for a K-

10-UL Schlitz by paying $512.02. Maybe it is time to

start selling some of my openers (maybe Pat won’t read

this part of the newsletter)? It was a Schlitz and Mike,

the “Truck Driver” likes his Schlitz openers.

“L” types had some nice “L-2”s sold but the nicest condi-

tion one, an L-2-9 Strohs, did not meet reserve at

$176.58. A nice L-2 “Jackson’s Napa Soda” brought a

good price at $178.63. Good “L-4”s continued to scare

this past quarter on eBay with the only highlight being an

L-4-46 Carling at $64.00.

“M-1”s and “M-2”s saw limited action all stayed below

the $100.00 level. Sliders, “M-3”s, saw the usual com-

mon ones sold and like the “M-1”s and “M-2”s stayed

well below the $100 level. I show five M-25-1 Lemp

bullet corkscrews selling and although it is very common,

two brought well over $100.00. Most likely some new

bidders on eBay and this should normally sell in the $40-

50 range (tops). This quarter continued the small nest of

M-73 Kessler slide-out corkscrews that saw initial action

last fall. Two different colors brought $290.00 (blue) and

$285.00 (yellow) and they were both in great shape.

“N” types was where the Truck Driver struck again, run-

ning over Scott Williams for the N-43-UL Schlitz at

$117.50. If Mike keeps this up he will run over every

club member by the end of the year. As a side note, some

nice belt buckles were sold this past quarter and they

really do generate a lot bidders on eBay (the chief one

being Art Johnson from Naples).

Wall mounts, “O” types, saw a lot of action this past

quarter especially with Starr openers. The overall market

for Starr openers has certainly drifted downward the past

year. Highlights include an O-505 “Big Bill” and “Big

Boy” both being bought for $180.00 each with “Buy-It-

Now” (BIN). This was the first “Big Bill” I had seen be-

ing sold individually on eBay (one was offered in a Starr

collection last fall). The most expensive wall mount this

past quarter was the oversized “Starr Flight Malted Milk”

and it closed at $346.00 (actually a pretty fair price for

this particular opener as some have gone well over

$500.00 on eBay).

Beer advertising corkscrews, “P” types, saw many nice

examples sold this past quarter. As usual the A-B beer

knives led the way with a mint P-25-9 in mint condition

bringing $1,044.00. A mint P-34-1 Schlitz with the origi-

nal pouch followed close behind at $997.00 (the “Truck

Driver” is happy since his mint one only cost him

$240.00, I was second place). John “Woody” Cartwright

had a field day again with wood handle beer ad cork-

screws. He rarely gets beat and has amassed a marvelous

collection of “Wood”. His best buy this quarter was a P-

19-UL for $10.00 with an ad for Cape Beer (Cape

Girardeau, MO). The seller did not mention the beer ad

and John just liked the town name and bought it for that

reason. If you play enough on eBay, you will get lucky.

Some nice rare types appeared in the “P”s including a P-

67-1 Krueger, P-108-1 Pfeiffer and topping all “P”s out, a

P-79-1 Loerzel Bros from New York and it brought

$1,705.00. A seller was watching on eBay as this issue

goes out, as another one has been listed on eBay.

The “Q” types even made this quarter’s list as I was the

lucky bidder on the Q-47-UL Schlitz (beat out Mike as

truck got a flat on this one). The Q-47 is a tough style to

find and real tough to find with a beer ad. Two tough

“R”s sold, a R-6-2 Sprenger (in nice shape) selling for

$216.49 and a R-8-1 Kaier (it had a nice repaint job)

bringing $305.00. The R-6 use to a strong $500.00-

600.00 opener and the R-8 at least a $1,000.00. Times

are changing for some openers and I guess too many of

these have been on the market.

General corkscrews continued to see many European rare

examples selling with a French Brevette 1881 Patent be-

ing the top seller at $10,212.00 (that would buy John Pat-

ton a lot of E-14s). Several other examples brought in the

$3K to $7K range. U.S. patent examples, at least the

rarer ones, were not as plentiful this quarter and the top

seller was a “Hootch Owl” bringing in $3,253.00 (seems

like I traded Mr. Bull one a few years back for $800.00

worth of beer openers, at least it found a good home).

Below is a label for a pre-pro Near-Beer beverage called

“Schooner Brew” from the National Beverage Co of

Chattanooga, TN. I have a Schooner Brew opener and

now it was considered a “beer” with no booze.

Here is the B-14-UL Virginia Brewing Co. Does anyone know the state it is from (VA or MN)? Both states had some Iron Ore mining but mainly Minnesota. Apples would have been from Virginia so who really knows? Not many Bock Beer open-ers were made. Get the word out and help me find out about this opener. Hopefully it is from Virginia so Pat Stambaugh will not bug me about it. Possibly pre-pro but most likely a post-pro bottle opener. Help!!!!!!
