The current environmental signage in place around

the building works well with the architecture and has

clearly been thought out for many areas. During our

visits and research we noticed places where signs had

been made to provide a quick fix for areas that were

lacking appropriate signage. This section will explore

those areas and provide suitable solutions.

The first sign that jurors are confronted with is in an area

where employees and jurors are separated. By placing

a sign that is consistent with the rest of the courthouse,

it establishes the experience of the courthouse within

seconds of entering the door.

Entrance

After passing through security, the jurors are now faced

with a wall with no directions as to which way to go for

the juror assembly room, leading them to the only choice

left; asking the security guards. The proposed signs are in

the same style as those for the security area, and can be

moved out of the way on days when jurors are not needed.

After Security

Along with the movable signs, permanent signage for

the jury assembly room can be added to existing walll

mounted signs. These would assist any jurors that

happen to enter through the back security area and also

allow visitors to see what the rooom looks like in off

hours. Visitors would also be more likely to remember

where this room is if they are summoned in the future.

This sign is on the outside of the rear door of the

assembly room. If juros are trying to locate the juror room

and stumble upon this door, they are redirected to the

check-in area.

Check-In Area

Once the jurors arrive at the entrance to the Juror

check-in area, it is now clear that this is where they need

to be. The added Jury check-in sign underneath of the

Jury Commisioner makes this obvious.

If the door is closed, jurors are encouraged to not enter

the room until they have been officially checked in,

reducing confusion and letting them know someone will

be with them shortly.

These signs replace the paper ones that are currently

in use in this area, and continue the theme of signage

throughout the building.

Bell

This sign for the bell area draws it’s style from the

illustrations on the restroom signage. Using a metal sign

here would reduce the need to replace a paper sign and

continue the more professional look of the jury room.

Exit

Upon exiting the courthouse, many users pass through

the same exit area. This area could be improved by the

use of the same kind of metal signage that is used within

the courthouse. This would stand up to the amount of

traffic much better than the paper sign that occupies

this space now and leave a strong impression upon the

experience that they have traveled with the use of signs

throughout the courthouse.
