Welcome to Showcase of Excellence
We at Tryon Fine Arts Center are pleased to welcome you for a fifth consecutive year to the Showcase of Excellence, a month-long fine arts program showcasing the talent and creativity of High School student artists in our area and celebrating the importance of arts in education.
Our Showcase of Excellence art competition is devised to provide our youth and their teacher-mentors with the opportunity and encouragement to explore and develop their artistic potential. The program further highlights the important work being done in local schools.
Feedback from our students and teachers bears testimony to the powerful impact of keeping Arts in Education. Together, with your support, we continue to enable our teachers to inspire, challenge and develop the imaginations and personal growth of our next generation. Thank you for your generosity and commitment to the arts. Sincerely, Mike Rigney Tara Brannon

Doris Turner, Juror
Doris Turner is a Spartanburg, South Carolina native and a graduate of The University of Georgia and Converse College. Doris has been a practicing artist for several years in addition to her career as an art teacher. As a former educator, Doris has passed her love of art onto generations of students at North Cross School, as well as Cannons Elementary. Doris is a member of the Artists' Guild of Spartanburg and Southern Exposure, where she has exhibited her work numerous times over the years.
Juror Statement
As an artist I need a personal reason, rational and inspiration to cre-ate art. When all of these things come together, I believe art is true, honest and universally an important statement. The handling of ma-terials and techniques enhance presentation. Usually the impressive use of the elements of art are evident in the successful works of art.
When grading student art I look for and reward the works which fit this criteria that I hold for my work.
Thank you...
To our sponsors and supporters, our judge, our artists, teachers, administrators and parents for your contributions to this event.
Many thanks, also to the volunteers who made this show possible.
I look forward to working with you in the future as Tryon Fine Arts Center continues to cultivate and support Arts in Education.
Sincerely, Marianne Carruth

Partners in Education
Tryon Fine Arts Center is a proud member of the prestigious Partners in Education program of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, DC. TFAC joined the SC partnership team started in 1996 with The Arts Partnership of Spartanburg, Spartanburg County School District One.
Partners in Education is designed to assist arts organizations throughout the nation to develop or expand educational partnerships with their local school systems. The primary purpose of these partnerships is to provide professional learning in the arts for teachers.
The Partners in Education program is based on the belief that teachers' professional learning is an essential component of any effort designed to increase the artistic literacy of young people. The Kennedy Center's extensive experience with its local professional learning program, established in 1976, provides the basis for this national program.
Currently 100 Partnership Teams in 39 States and the District of Columbia participate in the program. Each Partnership Team consists of at least two members: a representative of an arts organization and a representative of the senior administration of a neighboring school district.
Arts in Education at TFAC
In addition to professional learning opportunities for educators, TFAC offers a range of educational programs throughout the year. We are committed to education in the arts for all members of our community, striving to bring life changing experiences to young people and life-enriching lectures and classes to adults.
Each year, over 3000 pre-K to high school students and teachers from Western North Carolina and Upstate South Carolina engage in music, art, and theater programs provided by TFAC staff and volunteers.
Learn more about the range of available Arts in Education programs at www.tryonarts.org/education.
