What is Bright Futures

Merit based scholarship program funded by the Florida Lottery.

Its purpose is to reward academic achievement by providing funding to attend postsecondary education in Florida.

There are three different awards within this program

General Eligibility Requirements for Bright Futures

Be a Florida resident and U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen as determined by you postsecondary institution.

Enroll in an eligible Florida public or private postsecondary institution

Enroll in a minimum of 6 hours per term (or the equivalent)

Begin using the scholarship funds within three years of graduation (unless you enlist in the military).

Must not be found guilty of, or plead no contest to, a felony charge.

Must apply during your last year in high school – Application opens Dec. 1 of senior year.

Must complete the FASFA application – opens January 1, 2012

Three Award Levels

1. Florida Academic Scholars Award (FAS)

2. Florida Medallion Scholars Award (FMS)

3. Florida Gold Seal Vocational Scholars Award (GSV)

• Currently paying: $101.00 per credit hour at the Universities and $62.00 per credit hour at the community college

Medallion Scholars (FMS) – For students graduating

in June 2012

Initial Requirement

• 3.0 Weighted GPA

• 16 credits of college prep courses

• 75 hours of community service

• 980 minimum SAT score (reading & math)

• 21 minimum composite ACT Score

• Currently paying: $76.00 per credit hour at the Universities and $47.00 per credit hour at the community college

Award Value

Gold Seal Vocational (GSV)– For students graduating in June 2012

•3.0 Weighted GPA in “CORE” classes (instead of World Language that is counted for the other CORE GPA, use Fine Arts and HOPE)

•3.5 Unweighted GPA in 3 vocational credits in 1 vocational program

•83 in Reading and Sentence Skills and 72 on the Algebra sections of the CPT, OR 440 on the Reading and Math SAT, Or a 17 on the ACT English, 18 on the ACT Reading and 19 on the ACT Math

•30 hours of community service

•Award amounts match Florida Medallion Scholars

Q = What if I have a prepaid college plan? A = You can use both the prepaid and the Bright Futures Scholarship. Bright Futures can be used to cover

expenses that the prepaid plan does not cover.
