Get BusyAt HPU, we believe in learning by doing — so you’ll find plenty of internships, co-ops,
and research projects locally and globally to get your hands busy. Like developing
marketing strategies and materials for the U.S. Tennis Association, crunching numbers
for the World Bank, or designing a website for an international real estate consulting
firm. Or even conducting research at the Oceanic Institute or on the deck of our
HPU-owned vessel, Kaholo. And because we’re located in Honolulu — the hub of
Pacific trade and commerce — the opportunities are nearly endless.

Your HPU Student BodyAt HPU,
our student
body is made
up of almost
equal portions
of Hawai‘i,
mainland, and
international
students.
You study for a class taught
by an Australian…with friends
from Sweden, Indonesia,
and Italy…while sitting at
an open-air café on Fort Street
Mall in downtown Honolulu,
surrounded by smells and
flavors from Korea to
Poland to France to China.
Professors…classmates…
internship and co-op
opportunities…the very
environment…at HPU,
you’ll discover a uniquely
global education.
Why Hawai‘i Pacific University?
HPU offered amazing opportunities for hands-on learning. You can
access the research vessel starting your freshman year, and all of
your labs are based around the oceanography and marine biology
laboratories. I’ve experienced what most marine biology students don’t
have until their master’s or even their doctoral programs.
What kind of research programs have you been involved with?
Sea turtles are my passion, and I was thrilled to be chosen as the
youngest member of a research team tracking them in Panamalea
Cove. We would kayak to our GPS locations to see where the turtles
are, and sometimes I would find myself snorkeling within two feet of
one of the turtles. Being that close just melts your heart. The research I
was conducting can help protect their habitat, and I really felt like I was
making a difference.
What’s your most memorable HPU experience?
I am part of a program rescuing stranded marine mammals, the only
one in all of the Hawaiian Islands. I’ve worked on humpback calves,
spinner dolphins, and more. Sometimes they survive and sometimes
they don’t. It’s a balance between heartbreaking and amazing, but it’s
something that I know I wouldn’t experience outside of HPU.

“HPU’s global focus is not only helping me in my choice of major, but also in the way that I think about the world around me. My eyes have been opened to the challenges that we face as a society, but at the same time I am comforted with knowing that there are so many talented people in the world. With HPU’s global focus and the experiences I’ve had, I will be better equipped to go abroad and serve others.”
Saige Martin ’13 International Relations Philadelphia, PA
How have HPU’s global adventures changed the way you look at life?
I spent two months in Peru last summer
working in orphanages and an elementary
school. It opened my mind to new people
and relationships, and helped me realize how
important it is to get to know other cultures and
people and help in any way possible.
What attracted you to HPU?
As an international business and computer
science major, it is the perfect school for
me because Hawai‘i is the gateway to Asia,
Australia, North America, and South America.
How does HPU’s student body and location impact your education?
The diversity of HPU and Hawai‘i make for
a unique education. In my classes, you have
different viewpoints from different countries. I
have friends from around the world. And living in
Honolulu puts you elbow-to-elbow with people
from just about any culture you can imagine.
Did HPU’s diversity help you in your career?
I came from an international background, so HPU
was the perfect fit. I was able to interact with
people from around the world, which is exactly
what’s needed to be successful in my industry.

HPu resultsA Smart Educational InvestmentWe know that a main draw of college is preparing for your future. And we’re

“My experiences at HPU
also helped me learn what I
didn’t want to do. Through
the program, I interned in a
local university lab for a semester
and a summer, doing cutting-edge
paleooceanography. While fascinating, I learned that
I didn’t want to be in a lab for a living. By the time
I got to Boston, I knew I wanted to pursue science
journalism, even interning at noVA for a season.
HPU prepared me for that experience.”

“ As part of my HPU practicum requirements,
I interned with a local news station. Because of
the hands-on experiences I gained through that
internship, I found my calling as a journalist.
I am now a morning news anchor for one of the
top TV stations in Hawai‘i. HPU prepared me
well for the fast-paced, research-oriented, and
innovative job that I love.”

Buys in College Education.
Hawai‘i Pacific University
Reputation Outstanding. A private, not-for-profit, coeducational, nonsectarian, career-oriented postsecondary institution founded in 1965, HPU is consistently ranked among the best educational institutions in the nation. It is accredited by the Accrediting Commission for Senior Colleges and Universities of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). The Nursing Program is accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC), and is approved by the Hawai‘i Board of Nursing. The Social Work program is accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). The University is a member of the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB International), and is recognized by the Hawai‘i Commission on Postsecondary Education.
Location Stunning. Strategically located in the center of the Pacific Rim — the region with the fastest growing economies in the world — HPU provides an American education in an international setting. Cosmopolitan, culturally vibrant, and ethnically diverse, Hawai‘i is famous for its clean air and water and a population that enjoys the longest average life expectancy among the 50 states in the nation. In fact, Honolulu was recently ranked one of the safest and cleanest large cities in the United States.
Campus Distinctive. Hawai‘i Pacific University combines the excitement of an urban downtown campus with the serenity of a traditional campus set in the green foothills of O‘ahu’s Ko‘olau Mountains. The main campus is located in downtown Honolulu, the business and financial center of the Pacific. Eight miles away, situated on 135 acres in Kane‘ohe, the Hawai‘i Loa campus is the site of the College of Nursing and Health Science and the College of Natural and Computational Sciences. HPU is also affiliated with the Oceanic Institute, a 56-acre aquaculture research facility at Makapu‘u Point, that offers students research and hands-on opportunities. These three distinctive sites are conveniently linked by shuttle.
Student Body Incredible. More than 7,000 undergraduate and 1,200 graduate students from all 50 U.S. states and from more than 100 countries make HPU one of the most culturally diverse universities in the world. In fact, the student body is roughly split into thirds — one-third from the U.S. mainland, one-third from Hawai‘i, and one-third from around the globe.
Academic Programs Comprehensive. HPU offers more than 50 undergraduate and 13 graduate degree programs in the areas of business administration, communication, liberal arts, and science, including several pre-professional programs.
Faculty Accessible. Multicultural, diverse in their interests, and passionate about teaching, HPU faculty are renowned for the personal interest they take in each and every one of their students. HPU boasts more than 500 full- and part-time faculty from around the world with outstanding academic and business credentials, ensuring that HPU students can easily access a globe’s worth of knowledge and experiences. A vast majority of HPU faculty hold the highest degrees in their fields. The student: faculty ratio is 15:1, and the average class size is less than 25.
Value Extraordinary. With tuition cost almost half the U.S. average for private universities, HPU is among the most affordable such university in the nation. In fact, Bloomberg Businessweek says HPU has the “Best Undergraduate Return on Investment” among Hawai‘i colleges and universities.
