Nick Restifo has run a pro-style offense at Saint Ignatius for thirty
years. The Restifo offense has used strong armed pocket passers
often in the past, but has also found success with more mobile
quarterbacks. His offense has produced both 3,000 yard passers and
1,000 yard rushers. Ignatius has averaged 29.5 points per game since
his arrival.

Runs a swarming 3-5 stack defense. His blitzing schemes create
pressure on the opposing quarterback while relying on both zone and
man coverage from his defensive backs. The outside linebackers in
the 3-5 stack tend to be athletic, bringing the most pressure of any
position on the defense on the opposing team's quarterback. He has
moved players into 4-3 and 4-4 defenses in the past to maximize the
talent on the field.

Playing in College: Nine players from the Lancaster
class of 2009 are playing on NCAA football rosters
(NC State, Mount Union, West Point among the most
notable).
Lancaster Location: Lancaster is located 30 miles southeast of Columbus, Ohio. The average
drive from Lancaster to Columbus is about 40-50 minutes. This game is the second in a four
game trip which will bring Saint Ignatius to Dayton, Stuebenville, and Columbus. Last season
the team only traveled to Buffalo, Warren, Lakewood, Parma, and University Heights. Only one
of those games was more than 100 miles away.
Return to Central Ohio: Saint Ignatius football has
played 8 games all-time against teams from Central
Ohio (none since 2003). Ignatius is 7-1 in those
games. Ignatius is 1-1 against Saint Francis DeSales,
4-0 against Westerville North, and are 1-0 against both
Westerville South and Pickerington.
Historical Landmark: In 2003, as part of Ohio's bicentenial, the High School was made a
historical landmark due to Robert G. Heft's designing of the 50-star flag. He originally designed
it as a school project; he only got a B- on the assignment after it was turned in. It was changed
to an A after Congress accepted the flag design.
The Carpenter Family: Coach Rob Carpenter played
10 seasons in the NFL for the Rams, Giants, and
Oilers gaining 4,363 yards and scoring 29 TDs. His
sons all played college ball – Nathan finished at
Lancaster in 2010 and will play at Ohio, Georgie is
currently at Marshall, Jonathan played for the Bearcats
in Cincinnati (and is currently coaching as a graduate
assistant), and Bobby played for Ohio State prior to
playing for the Dallas Cowboys. As players at the
collegiate level, no Carpenter has ever lost in a bowl
game (11-0).
Lancaster Pronunciation: Many in Lancaster make it a point to tell visitors that Lan-CASS-ter
is located in Pennsylvania. In Ohio, there is only Lan-KISS-ter.
Recent Successes: 6 of the past 7 years the Golden Gales have made the OHSAA Playoffs
(1989, '93, '94, 2003, '04, '05, '06, '07, '09). They have held shares of their conference

Tradition in Winning: Centerville has made the
OHSAA Playoffs each of the last three years, and five
of the last six. They have qualified for the playoffs 11
times. They have also won a share of their
conference title 21 times since 1975. Their last losing
season was in 1974, when the team went 4-6. The
Elks have played for one OHSAA state championship,
falling to Saint Ignatius in 1991, a summary of that
game is on the left.
1991 OHSAA State Championship Game: After a pair of early turnovers in Saint Ignatius
territory, the Wildcats found themselves down by 14 points just 5:08 into the first quarter. The
Cats fought back, though, and were able to make it a 14-9 game by the end of the first period.
Defensive back Joe Lewandowski recorded a safety on the first play after a brilliant punt by TJ
Mandat (off a bobbled snap). On the kickoff resulting from the safety, Dean Lamirand returned
the ball to the Centerville 11, where a ten yard blast by Eric Haddad and a one yard touchdown
run by Brandon Hatton brought the game to a five point margin. An Elks missed field goal set
up a series of possessions with no scoring, until a score with under ten seconds left gave
Centerville broke the scoring. The score at half had the Elks leading 21-9.
Saint Ignatius, while down 12 points, never lost their composure. In the third quarter, an all-out
blitz by the Elks with the Wildcats in their own territory allowed Lamirand to find an opening in
the coverage in the third quarter, and he raced for a 72-yard touchdown on a perfectly thrown
ball by quarterback Kevin Mayer. Entering the fourth quarter, the Cats trailed by a score of 21-
16. Then, with 7:10 left, one of the great playcalls in Cats history. Kevin Mayer took the snap
and tosses the ball to Cats running back Eric Haddad, who pulled up near the line of
scrimmage and tossed a 37-yard touchdown pass to receiver Mike Sako who elluded four
tacklers for the go-ahead score. A Kevin Mayer to Eric Haddad swing pass for the two-point
conversion would close out the scoring. (Information from Tim Hudak's Wildcats! Vol. 2, Page

Smile for the Cameras: Saint Ignatius played in the
first high school game ever nationally televised. Don
Bosco Prep, however, has played three games on
national television in the past three years defeating De
La Salle High School from California in 2007 and
2008, and Prattville from Alabama in 2009.
Feeding College Football: Ten players on the 2009
football team at Bosco will be continuing their athletic
careers at the Division I NCAA level. Colleges
chosen by Don Bosco athletes include Pitt, Virginia,
Boston College, Yale, Vanderbilt, and Colorado. The
Ironmen lose two running backs, two defensive ends,
two linebackers, three offensive linemen and a wide
receiver to Division I universities.
Just another National Champion: Saint Ignatius has
played numerous national champions in its history. In
2008, the Cats played the defending national
champion Bombers of Saint Xavier. Canton McKinley,
whom the Wildcats are 10-4 against in the Chuck Kyle
era, won the national title in ‘97. Moeller, winners of
five national titles, are winless against Ignatius (0-4, 0-
2 in the playoffs.) The team with the most titles is
Massillon Washington (9-time champs), the Cats are
12-1 against them all-time. In ‘95 the Cats shared the
national title with Berwick. The Cats defeated Berwick
handily in ‘97 (37-6), but lost a nail biter 30-28 in ‘98,
their most recent match up. The Cats are 0-2 against
Penn Hills. In all the Cats have played 6 former
national champions.

Conference Switch: Mentor will be switching from the LEL to the Northeast Ohio Conference
beginning in 2011. Menot has plenty of success in the LEL, going 59-13 (.819) under Coach
Trivisonno. He is 36-31 (.539) out of conference in 13 seasons.
Outscored: 2009 marked the first time the Cardinals
have had a sub-.500 mark under Coach Triv. This
was the second time they were outscored.

Outmatched: Although Mentor v. Ignatius is usually a
very competitive rivalry, the Wildcat football program
out scored Mentor 136-7 at the JV, freshman, and
Varsity levels in 2009 over the course of four games.
The 40 point win in 2009 at the varsity level is second
in the series to the Cats 41 point win in 1989.

NFL Players from the Mentor Football Program:

Difficult 2009: In 2009, although the team lost only
four games, the Cardinals were unable to qualify for
the playoffs for the first time since 2005. Losses to
Solon (Regional Finalist), Saint Ignatius (Regional
Semifinalist), Archbishop Moeller (Regional
Quarterfinalist), and Massillon (State Semifinalist) left
the Cardinals out of the hunt. That experience,
however, allows them to bring back over half of their
starting lineup.
Tough Schedule: Four of Mentor’s opponents made
the playoffs in 2009, and seven made the playoffs in
2008. Opponents had a combined regular season
record of 59-40-1 in 2009, and two teams had perfect
regular seasons in 2009 (Solon and Saint Ignatius).
Charity Game: In week one both Saint Ignatius and
Mentor will participate in a doubleheader at Cleveland
Browns Stadium. Mentor will face the Eagles of Saint
Edward before Saint Ignatius takes on Lake Catholic
on August 28th.

Heavily Publicized: In 2009 the Mentor v. Ignatius
game was covered by four radio stations live and two
television stations broadcasted the game on tape
delay.
Coach Andersen: Don Andersen was head coach at Steve Trivisonno's previous coaching

Indianapolis. Sanders signed the richest contract ever
given to a safety in the NFL, and is known to be one of
the most physical run defenders in the league.
Underclassmen’s Success v. Prep: While no recent
match ups have pitted the varsity football teams
against each other, freshman and JV have both
continued to play Prep. In 2009 the JV team defeated
prep 35-7 and the freshman team defeated Prep 6-0.
In 2007, the current seniors defeated Prep 22-14 in a
freshman game in 2008.
Since 2003: In 2005, Don Holl took over at Cathedral
Prep from then-coach Mike Mischler. After four
seasons Holl resigned, returning the job to Mischler
who had already coached the Ramblers for seven
years and had coached at Iroquis for three seasons
(17-16). In his first season back at the helm, Mischler
was 11-3. He is now 72-28 (.720) as a head coach at

The Rivalry: In 2008 the Wildcats and Eagles were
ranked the number six high school football rivalry in
the country. The article by Rivals explained that
Ignatius and Ed's have even competed in a "Battle

blood to the American Red Cross. Needless to
say, the West Side War is one of the most intense
in high school football.

They play three Cincinnati Powers and go to

the Eagles by scores of 28-0 and 37-0. These are
the first consecutive shutouts in the series since
1990. Chuck Kyle has now shut out Saint Edward
six times. That is the most shutouts against any
one team in the Chuck Kyle Era.

Saint Ignatius at Byers Field (Splits)
1-1 (.500)
Byers Field has an official capacity of 11, 423 and a FieldTurf surface. The turf surface
has often been an issue of complaint for many athletes, as it can be difficult to find good
footing during inclement weather. The stadium is currently home to Saint Ignatius, Parma,
Normandy, and Valley Forge. The press box holds about 30 reporters and broadcasters,
with a room for reporters to file stories on the opposite side of the field underneath the
visitor’s bleachers adjacent to the official’s locker room. Coaches’ boxes can be found on
either side of the press box, with a scoreboard operator located adjacent to the section
seven loge.
Saint Ignatius has held a distinct home
field advantage at Byers Field. In 2010
they will be playing four home games and
in 2009 they were 6-0 in the friendly
confines with comeback wins against
Glenville, Northmont (largest in school
history), and Massillon.
About the Stadium: Byers Field is a multi-use facility built for football, track, rugby, and
soccer. With the addition of a large video board in one end zone (which is used for down
and distance, score, time remaining, instant replays, and live action video), Byers Field
has modernized its facilities for fans. The stadium lights, which were originally located in
front of the stands, are no located at the corners of the stands, making sure every fan’s
view unimpeded. Concession stands are found beneath the home team’s grandstands,
and all locker rooms are found beneath the home grandstands as well. The press box is
located above the home grandstands between the stadium’s two loges - each holding 32
fans (found over sections three and seven.)

Please note that the Cleveland Browns Stadium game v. Lake Catholic is considered an AWAY GAME for Saint Ignatius. The
credentials for the Charity Game are distributed by Home Team Marketing.
This is Saint Ignatius' 3rd game at Bedford Bearcat Stadium. Saint Ignatius is 2-
0 all-time in Bedford.
About the Stadium: Cleveland Browns Stadium is the home to the
National Football League’s Cleveland Browns. The stadium was
constructed to host the Browns following their return to the NFL in
their 1999 expansion season. Located just off Lake Erie, the wind is
often a major factor in the kicking and passing games. Ignatius hasn't
played at the Browns stadium since Cleveland Municipal Stadium.
Week One: Lake Catholic Cougars
Cleveland Browns Stadium
Location: 100 Alfred Lerner Way
Cleveland, Ohio, 44114
Saint Ignatius is 9-22-3 all-time in professional stadiums (League Park,
Cleveland Stadium). This is the 50th stadium Chuck Kyle has coached
in (since 1983).
CBS has played host to college football games (including Ohio State
v. Toledo in 2009), international soccer matches, and some of the
biggest concerts tours in the nation in the past, few high school
games have been played in the stadium. The grass surface has been
a major drawback to holding high school games at CBS. The stadium
holds 73,200 people, making it the second largest stadium in the
state of Ohio, and as an NFL stadium, it will have all the amenities
needed for broadcasting or print journalists. The game will be
preceded with a match-up between Mentor and Saint Edward, both of
whom are on the Saint Ignatius schedule in 2010.
About the Stadium: Built in 1994, Bedford Bearcat Stadium is a 5,000
seat stadium and the home of the Bedford Bearcats. With 3,000 seats
on the press box side and 2,000 seats on the opposite side of the
field, the Stadium features a standing room only capacity of 8,000.
The stands span from goal line to goal line on the home side, with
slightly shorter stands on the away side of the stadium.
Week Two: Bedford Bearcats
Bedford Bearcat Stadium
Location: 481 Northfield Rd.
Bedford, Ohio, 44146
Saint Ignatius has not played a game within the Cleveland city limits since 1991. Their last game in Cleveland was against
the Padua Bruins at John Marshall Field. Saint Ignatius was the away team for that game, picking up a 37-14 win. The
Wildcats play in Cleveland at Cleveland Browns Stadium against Mentor Lake Catholic week one, Saint Ignatius will, again,
be the road team.
A FieldTurf surface highlights the on-field amenities, while a
520-square foot scoreboard can be found beyond one of the
end zones. Field lighting is provided by four banks on lights
located behind the stands to give spectators a clear view of the
action. Noted as the #1 Athletic Facility in Greater Cleveland
in 2006 and 2007 by the Cleveland Plain Dealer, the stadium
also acts as home of the Cleveland City Stars, a professional
soccer team. When the City Stars play on the field, it goes by
the name Middlefield Cheese Stadium. The Wildcats last
game at Bedford was against Warren G. Harding in 2004. The
Cats won that game 56-0. That was also the most recent time
the Wildcats played a home game away from Byers Field in
Parma.

This is the first time Saint Ignatius has played at Fulton Field. This is the 51st
stadium Chuck Kyle has coached in.
The stadium holds up to 7,500 fans. The press box is rather old, and
therefore doesn't have many press amenities (no wireless).
Lancaster does provide a phone line available for press. After
Golden Gale wins, the Victory Bell is rung. The bell is located on the
South end of the stadium. After all games, the team and the
Lancaster cheerleaders lead the fans in the singing of the Alma
Mater.

Saint Ignatius will travel to Browns Stadium, Bedford, Lancaster, Centerville, and Stuebenville before finally going home to
Robert M. Boulton Stadium. This is the first time in Ignatius football history the team will play five consecutive road games.
They played four straight road games in 2001, going just 1-3. This is only the third time ('85, '99) that the Cats have
scheduled six road games in one regular season.
Week Four: Centerville Elks
Centerville Stadium
Location: 500 East Franklin St.
Centerville, Ohio, 45459
Opened in 1979, the stadium seats 8,000 screaming fans
(10,000 Standing Room Only) and has long been known as
one of the most difficult places to play in the state. The Dayton
Daily News named it the toughest stadium for opposing teams
to play in the Miami Valley. The team lost only one game at
home, with a missed field goal sealing their loss to Cincinnati
Moeller.
The field was re-turfed two years ago with a synthetic turf. In
describing the field, the Daily News article goes on to speak of the
blaring music, the large scoreboard, and the raucous student section
as reasons the team has a 12th man at Centerville Stadium. During
night games it is common for the fans to participate in a black-out, a
tradition that has been known to make it difficult for opposing players
to maintain concentration. Their band features 200 students and
finished in the top ten of marching bands in the Bands of America
national competition a year ago. They repeat their competitive show
following home games.
Week Three: Lancaster Golden Gales
Fulton Field
Location: 825 East Fair Ave.
Lancaster, Ohio, 43130
Located behind Thomas Ewing Junior High in Lancaster (but
accessible from the North via the high school), the stadium
was built in the 1960's and has undergone some minor
changes over the past 50 years. The stadium is built in a
valley on a winding lane (Arbor Valley Frtive) along a creek
(Fetters Run). Both ends of the stadium are open, with
bleachers lining borth sidelines the entire length of the field.
The field is surrounded by an eight-lane track. The field
surface remains natural grass, and there is no video board at
Lancaster Stadium.

Home Team Advantage?: Saint Ignatius is 3-3 at Ballaban Field and 2-0 at Bedford Bearcat Stadium all time. The Wildcats,
as mentioned above, haven't played at any of the other stadiums the 2010 team will travel to.
Playing in new surroundings: Saint Ignatius is 42-7 under Coach Kyle in new stadiums since 1983 (his first season as head
coach). This season Saint Ignatius will play games at four venues Coach Kyle previously hasn't coached in - Cleveland
Browns Stadium, Lancaster, Centerville, and Stuebenville.
This is the first time Saint Ignatius has played at Harding Stadium. This is the
53rd stadium Chuck Kyle has coached in.
With seats on all four sides of the field, the fans are seated directly
over the players. Perhaps most impressive is the stadium’s
scoreboard with a stallion (“Man O’ War” horse) mounted on top,
which shoots a six foot flame above the scoreboard following a Big
Red touchdown. It also features a 14’ x 14’ video screen. A two story
press box has room for coaches, broadcasters, and print journalists.
Recent upgrades include ProGrass synthetic turf, an upgraded
surround sound system, and a new lighting system. The stadium was
also the first Ohio high school stadium to have “miked” referees in
game. The game between Saint Ignatius and Don Bosco Prep is part
of an annual Rally in the Valley event.
About the Stadium: Seating 6,713 for soccer, football, and
lacrosse, Xavier stadium is a multipurpose high school facility
that recent underwent renovations as recently as 2003.
Standing room crowds have often been reported as over
10,000. The stadium is located on campus and is the
centerpiece of the school’s athletic facilities. With high rising
home stands, the Blue Monster – a nickname for the team’s
well known student section – is located on the scoreboard side
of the field. Alumni groups and the Xavier band are located
beyond the end zones. The press facilities feature plenty of
room for print journalists as well as broadcasters.

Steubenville, Ohio, 43952
Week Nine: Saint Xavier Bombers

About the Stadium: Harding Stadium is home to one of the top
football programs in high school football history, the
Steubenville Big Red. Built between 1928-1930, the stadium
was built with 4,800 seats for $45,000. Currently seating ten
thousand fans, the stadium is known to Big Red fans as Death
Valley.
