WELCOME

On behalf of Mullaloo Surf Life Saving Club (MLSLSC), we would like to extend a very warm welcome to all juniors and their families to what promises to be another great season on the beach.

We have a proud history spanning over 50 years, providing lifesaving services to the Mullaloo community and beyond. MLSLSC is one of the biggest clubs in Australia. With an expanding membership base and growing success in both the competition and education arenas, we have plenty on offer to cater for all requirements.

The Junior program is about education, awareness, competition, sportsmanship and transition to seniors (for U13’s). We never lose sight that the most important factor for all our members is participation and fun.

Surf knowledge and techniques are gradually introduced to the children in relation to their age and ability. When juniors move into the U14 age group at the age of 13, they will attain their Surf Rescue Certificate (SRC), which is the start of their journey as a patrolling member of the surf club.

This booklet will provide all the information you will need to know about the Junior program at MLSLSC. We recommend that you keep this booklet as a handy reference guide. If you require any further information, please feel free to ask any Age Group Manager (AGM) or the Manager of Junior Development.

MLSLSC is proud to be able to offer a wide variety of services and activities to its membership base and the wider community. MLSLSC is a volunteer organization and as such relies on the involvement of parents to step up and provide support. As part of our club ethos, we actively encourage our members to provide volunteer hours over the season. Please ensure you commit to lending a hand.

Finally, I would like to wish you all an enjoyable and safe season.

Jackie Eley Manager Junior Development Mullaloo Surf Life Saving Club

Children MUST obtain their parents’ permission prior to re-entering the water after club day has fin-ished and club caps are to be removed at the end of the session.

AGE GROUP MANAGERS (AGM’S)AGM’s are allocated to each age group and are responsible for organizing and conducting various activities as per the programs developed by SLSWA. The responsibilities of an AGM are as follows:

• Encourage the children of their age group to participate, enjoy, co-operate and compete in all activities of the Club;

• Keep weekly records of each child’s attendance;• Instruct the children of their age group in the necessary requirements of the Surf Education

Program;• Organize the children at competitions, which includes marking the attendance sheet,

assisting in team selections and marshalling the children for their allocated events.• Assist in the instruction of the correct techniques of the events the children participate in;• Keep the children and parents informed of the requirements of the age group and of club

information; and• Ensure the children of the age group aware of and encourage sun protection.

AGM’s are all volunteers, so we encourage and actually require more AGM’s. Please consider joining and assisting in this important function. Note that there is an on-line and practical course completion requirement in order to become an AGM. This will assist those who may not feel comfortable in the role as well as those who have undertaken AGM duties previously. Please contact the Manager Junior Development to find out more.

AGE GROUP MANAGERS ASSISTANTS (AGMA’S) The focus of an AGMA is to assist the AGM with conducting the junior programs during the summer. instructing of the group;• Be a positive role model;• Play an active role within the group; • Be aware of their own and the groups’ safety and wellbeing;• To work as part of a team;• To assist and take an active role to assist the AGM if required

WATER SAFETYMLSLSC maintains a dedicated Beach Patrol and IRB (inflatable rescue boat) Patrol during Sunday sessions to monitor safety for all age groups. These volunteers are all Bronze Medallion qualified or hold an SRC and are focused on assisting the AGM’s in providing a safe environment for all participants. On club days parents who are suitably qualified are required to provide assistance in the water activities. Please ensure you make the AGM aware that you are available to assist. Without the presence of water safety we would not be able to provide aquatic activities for the children. If you are interested in gaining one of these qualifications then contact the Manager of Education. See the contacts section of this document for more information.

VOLUNTEER SUPPORTParents are encouraged to make themselves known to your child’s AGM and to offer assistance when required. Helpers are always needed to ensure that the day’s events run smoothly and safely.

Parents are requested to be on hand during Juniors and to resume responsibility for their children at the conclusion of the day’s events.

Parents without qualifications have roles to play as well;• Committee members • Setting up the beach• Carnival assistants • Social coordinators• BBQ assistance • Carnival Officials

We encourage and need your help. The Club is run by volunteers so all assistance is actively encour-aged and no experience is required. If you can assist speak to your child’s AGM or email the Manager Junior Development. See the contacts section of the document.

PROFICIENCY SWIMSNo child will be able to participate in water events without first completing a Junior Participation Skill Evaluation. This is a requirement of Surf Lifesaving Australia (SLSA) and is compulsory.

Please note that at this time, the U7’s Age Group DO NOT have to complete this requirement.
