Junior Achievement of Chicago is an educational nonprofit bringing financial literacy, work readiness, and entrepreneurship

programs into classrooms from kindergarten through high school. JA of Chicago is the largest JA office of more than 120

area offices in the United States and reached an all-time high of 431,281 students during the 2011-2012 school year.

Today, students need an educational experience that gives them confidence about their future and skills to succeed in the global economy

University education price tag steadily climbing, while most teens do not understand basic personal finance

Uncertain economy and number of jobs requiring postsecondary education is on the rise

Employees increasingly value workplace entrepreneurship and unemployment

rates are encouraging young people to become more entrepreneurial

Partnerships and support from corporations, small businesses, universities, foundations, service clubs and individuals allows JA to bring volunteers and programs to local classrooms. JA trains volunteers to deliver our educational materials, which are provided at no cost to the students or schools.

JA programs show students the value of an education, bridge the gap of what they are learning in the classroom with the real world, and equip them with the skills and tools they need to be more successful in school and their future careers.

To our Valued InVesTors and FrIendsevery parent’s dream is for their children to have a better life than they did. Yet with the challenge

of financing advanced education becoming more difficult each passing year and the job market

and our economy remaining uncertain, young people today are less confident that they can achieve

this dream.

a 2012 survey commissioned by Junior achievement usa revealed that only 56 percent of teens

between the ages of 14 and 18 years believe they will be as financially well-off as their parents.

and despite the widespread belief that advancing to higher levels of education beyond high school

is a necessity for future success, a report by the organization for economic Cooperation and

development shows that the united states continues to lose ground in this area, compared to

other developed countries.

With the obstacles young people face today, there has never been a more crucial time for students

to take control of their own futures, and understand that their own choices related to work readiness,

money management skills, and business ventures will shape our communities and our economy

for decades to come.

The need for your support of our programs has never been greater. We are pleased to report that

Ja of Chicago reached 431,281 students (25% market penetration and a 5% increase over the prior

year) in our 12-county outreach area in Chicago and the suburbs. With your continued investments

and support, we will expand our programs by focusing on Ja’s three pillars of success for our youth:

financial literacy, work readiness, and entrepreneurship.

The Junior achievement elementary school programs include grade-specific lesson themes for kindergarten through fifth-grade students.

High school students had the opportunity to practice professional development skills through competitive interviewing, resume writing

and career-oriented workshops while participating in “JA You’re Hired!,” an innovative new program. Developed by JA and presented by

The University of Phoenix Chicago Campus, the program brought together more than 130 students from nine Chicago-area high schools

at the Chicago Marriott O’Hare. Local business professionals from more than 50 Chicago companies (including those from the financial,

education, technology, retail and business sectors) helped students develop and practice their networking skills.

Participating high schools included: Austin Academy (Chicago), Dunbar High School (Chicago), Highland Park High School (Highland

Park), Kankakee Area Career Center (Bourbonnais), Lemont High School (Lemont), Niles North/West (Skokie), Round Lake High School

(Round Lake), Carl Sandburg High School (Orland Park), and Wells Community Academy (Chicago).

THe Ja CoMPanY ProGraMJA flagship program continues to inspire students

each year, Ja of Chicago awards high school students who participated and competed in the flagship Ja

Company program, which challenges high school students to take on “officer” roles while running their

own company. This year, the Company of the Year award went to “Inkspot,” which is a magazine written,

produced and marketed by lemont High school students.

2012 sCHolarsHIP aWardsProviding over $100,000 to exceptional students

each year, Ja gives thousands of dollars in scholarships and awards to exceptional students who have

participated in Ja programs. This year, we provided more than $100,000 in scholarships and awards to

24 outstanding high school students. The top award, the Colonel Henry Crown scholarship, provides

$20,000 over the course of four years at an accredited college and includes a paid summer internship

at a Henry Crown affiliated company.

Junior achievement’s year-round Bowl-a-Thon events bring together thousands of business

professionals who represent over 40 Chicago companies to raise awareness and funds for Ja.

Participating in a Bowl-a-Thon is a great way for companies and individuals to support students

in their community, while also having fun with colleagues, friends, and family. This year, the

Bowl-a-Thon events raised over $648,000, which will directly support over 48,000 students.

18TH annual daY aT THe raCes

since 1982, golfers from all over the Chicago area have come together

to support Junior achievement. With 70 foursomes, the 2012 outing

raised over $320,000, a $75,000 increase from last year, which will

enable us to reach thousands of Chicago area students with Ja’s

economic education programs.

Professional golfer and lPGa Tour star, Paula Creamer, led a clinic

at this year’s event. Paula provided golfing tips before joining fellow

golfers on the course.

Hundreds of guests showed their support for Junior achievement at arlington Park race Track while networking and

mingling amongst friends, colleagues, and clients at the 18th annual day at the races event. Guests enjoyed the

excitement of thoroughbred racing and the gorgeous setting of arlington Park, while experiencing exciting first-rate

service in the sky suite level, a delicious buffet and open bar, and the opportunity to bid on their auction items.

We would like to extend special thanks to Bill Morrison of northern Trust for serving as the event chairman and

to northern Trust and Mayer Brown for sharing the secretariat suite. Thank you to our entire day of the races

committee, event sponsors, and auction donors who helped to make this a successful event, raising $123,000.

Ja’s Golf outing was held at Cog Hill Golf & Country Club and included

foursomes on the premier dubsdread course, one of Chicago’s most

renowned courses. Golfers enjoyed a full round of golf, breakfast, lunch,

and an afternoon reception featuring hors d’oeuvres, cocktails, and a

silent and live auction.

We cannot express enough thanks for our fantastic supporters and a

special thank you to our 2012 chairman, neal Campbell of CdW, and to the

entire golf committee for their hard work in making this event a success.

At an event hosted by Junior Achievement at the Standard club in chicago on October 27, 2011, warren Buffett showed his support for JA while discussing the importance of youth financial education.

the Chicago area. Ja is a not-for-profit tax-exempt corporation under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal revenue Code and is a publicly

supported organization as defined by sections 170(b) (1) (a) (vi) and 509 (a) (1) of the code. Contributions to Junior achievement of
