COOL WATERS

Welcome to Summer! Will you be spending a lot of time by the pool? I hope so.

What is it about water that is so refreshing? I am astounded at the wisdom of God, our Creator, who made over two-thirds of our world water.

Water is the only substance I can think of in nature that purifies. The more contact you have with water, the cleaner you get. That amazes me. The Lord provides us avenues of purity, washing, cleanness! He surrounds us in fact with purifying waters. What a gift.

Take time this month to give thanks to God for the purifying waters and streams He has poured into your life.

Dr. Timothy P. McConnell

Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot

enter the kingdom of God.” (John 3:5)

WOMEN’S CORNER

DEAREST SISTERS IN CHRIST,

Blessings to each and every one of you. I briefly want to thank all of you for your

support this past year. We have done amazing things, thanks in part, to the MANY

VOLUNTEERS that we have had to chair and coordinate our various missions and events. The Coordinating Team was a fantastic group of VERY hard working, dedicated women. I would like to mention a few of our missions and events. We were blessed with a very successful Operation Christmas Child, we more than doubled the amount of shoeboxes that we donated from the previous year, the Meringa Tree was again recognized monetarily from our Green Christmas Cards, we donated new tables to the Fellowship Team to be used throughout the year for church wide events, we donated to the youth mission trip, we were blessed to be able to give $600.00 to Cobb Pregnancy that we collected at our PW Retreat, we organized a church-wide sew-in and made over 300 items to send to Kenya for the orphanages that our Mission Team visited. We also received monetary donations for t-shirts to go with the dresses and shorts that we made. The sew-in even reached out to other church PW groups and several came and joined us. The Easter Baskets for M.U.S.T. were fabulous and the Thanksgiving basket donations were overwhelming, not to mention the $1,000 + that we were able to include for the purchase of turkeys etc. Smashed Potini Night and the PW Spring Luncheon provided a wonderful outlet for fellowship time and fun. The various circles each have special missions that they support each year as well. It has been an honor to have served as your PW Moderator this past year, and I look forward to another blessed year under the guidance of our new PW Moderator, Ellen Foster.

Be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord. 1 Corinthians 15:58

Peace & Grace,

Jane Merry, Moderator 2011-2012

CRAFT CIRCLE

The Craft Circle will take the months of June, July, August off and resume in September on our normal schedule. If

you'd like to "keep your hands busy" and work on hats/mittens/scarves for the Christmas trees and would like to use yarn that has been donated to the Craft Circle, the yarn is located in Room 203/CLC in labeled bins.

LADIES LUNCH BUNCH Ladies Lunch Bunch will meet on Thursday, June 21st at 12 Noon at Bahama Breeze Restaurant in Kennesaw. Directions from the church: Take Sewell Mill to East Piedmont Rd. This becomes Barrett Parkway. Go past Town Center, past I-75, and pass the street going to Cosco. Make a U-Turn at Cobb Place Blvd. Restaurant will be on your right. Go just past it to turn into the parking lot. RSVP to Sandra Allen at [email protected] or 770-977-8742.

PW HONORARY LIFE MEMBERSHIP PROGRAM

An Honorary Life Membership in Presbyterian Women is conferred upon a woman in recognition of faithful service

in some area of the church’s work. 2012 found us honoring a woman who has served as an Elder, Moderator of PW (twice) Vacation Bible School Teacher, member of the choir, participates in Small Group, raised a family of 4, was a teacher prior to retirement, member of Spunky Spirits, prepared and served Wednesday night dinners before we had a chef and in general is always willing to volunteer in whatever way she can to serve the Lord. We proudly bestowed this honor on Nancy Speiser. Congratulations Nancy.

SUMMER CHRISTIAN LIFE TRAINING CLASSES

VACATION BIBLE

SCHOOL

ITEMS NEEDED

Fabric paint markers, empty plastic water bottles

(16.9oz size), toilet paper tubes, paper towel tubes, empty cereal boxes, colored jewelry beads, ficus trees, "hanging" fern plants, large cardboard boxes (mattress/ bicycle/appliance size!).

VOLUNTEER TRAINING

Sunday, June 3, in the CLC from 12:30-2:30pm

(includes lunch) for all VBS volunteers (youth and adult). Training will cover all areas of VBS leadership as well as EPC's new Child Protection Policy.

SNACK COMMITTEE

We needs your help! In order to provide snacks

everyday for nearly 200 kids and volunteers, we have to purchase a lot of goodies. To help with this, we're asking for contributions of gift cards to Kroger, Publix, or Walmart. Any amount is greatly appreciated! Cards can be given to anyone on the VBS leadership team (Hubie Mann, Jo Byrd, Cathy Dubose, Alison Horton, Leigh Sain) or dropped off in the church office.

CHILDREN'S TEACHERS NEEDED

We still need a few more volunteers to teach 1-2

weeks of children's Sunday school during the summer so that our regular teachers can have some time "off". We provide the curriculum and training; you provide the love and encouragement for our children for one or two weeks. What a blessing! Contact Hubie Mann in the Christian Education office to sign-up.

ADULT SUMMER CLASSES

Adult classes begin on Sunday, June 3. We will be

offering two 8 week classes this summer which will meet immediately following the contemporary service and are outlined below:

THE MIRACLE OF LIFE CHANGE

Is life change really possible? For many people who

attempt to make real life changes on their own, the answer is usually no. However, life change is possible. In fact, the Christian life calls us to grow and become transformed, but it is a process that many of us struggle with daily. We will be looking at Ephesians 4 and learning what the transformation process is all about. This course will be led by Eddie Capparucci in CLC Room 204.

JESUS, THE BEAUTIFUL OUTLAW

He was accused of nearly everything--breaking the

law, keeping bad company, heavy drinking and being the devil himself. He was so compelling and dangerous that they had to kill him. But those who knew him best loved him passionately. He had a sense of humor; his generosity was scandalous; his anger made enemies tremble; he would say the most outrageous things. Come and see Jesus. The real Jesus. A Perfect Love who defies conventional belief. A Beautiful Outlaw. This course will be led by Hubie and Terri Mann in CLC Room 202.

What Is the Difference Between a Stephen Ministry

Relationship and a Friendship?

Stephen Ministers have a lot in common with close

friends. You can depend on them; you can trust them; they'll be there for you. But the Stephen Minister's role is different from the role of a close friend. A Stephen Ministry relationship is one-sided. Stephen Ministers listen, reflect thoughts and feelings, and care. Stephen Ministers don't share their own problems with the care receiver as a friend might. They focus only on the care receiver's issues. Friends often aren't very objective. Stephen Ministers maintain boundaries that friends don't--which is why Stephen Ministers are able to help in ways that friends may not. They focus on the process of caring without trying to "fix things" or pushing for results, as well-meaning friends so often do. They listen in ways that let the care receiver find his or her own solutions. They may listen to the same story sixteen times and be willing to listen for the seventeenth as well. Stephen Ministers rely on God to direct and help them as they care for their care receivers. Their care is based on grace; Stephen Ministers strive to be the face of Christ to their care receivers. The Stephen Minister is always sensitive to the care receiver's needs in this aspect, never forcing prayers or Bible verses into the relationship. Stephen Ministry relationships are not forever. The time will come when the care receiver no longer needs a Stephen Minister, and the relationship will close. For more information or to request a Stephen Minister, leave a confidential message at 770-977-2976

ext 13 or [email protected]. The Referral Coordinator will contact you.

Stephen Ministry

at Eastminster

Is Christ inviting you to use your gifts to care for

others who are hurting? Do you wish to walk beside someone struggling with a difficult situation? Are you able to listen confidentially, encourage without directing and seek God’s will through prayer? God is always at work. As you hear Him speak to you, listen and respond to His invitation to do His work. Eastminster Presbyterian Church has had Stephen Ministry since 2005. Since then, many care receivers within our congregation as well as outside the church have benefited from the care of a trained Stephen Minister from Eastminster Presbyterian Church. The next class for Stephen Minister Training will beginning in the Fall. Now may be the time for you to learn more about the application process, training materials used, and the commitment needed to become a Stephen Minister. For detailed information or to suggest the name of someone you know who may have gifts for this ministry, please contact one of our Stephen Ministry Leaders found at www.epres.org/stephen_ministry .

MISSION SPOTLIGHT

What is MUST?

MUST Ministries is a faith-based organization dedicated to providing services to persons and families in

crisis, while maintaining their dignity in the Cobb/Cherokee County area. MUST is a place where one's faith can be put into action and where we can minister to the poor, the brokenhearted and those who are in crisis. Eastminster, along with many other churches and organizations, is actively involved in helping MUST in serving those in need. MUST served close to 34,000 people in the Cobb area in 2011. Approximately half were children. The Must Summer Lunch Program served 145,000 lunches in 2011. 3,100 children a day received a nutritious sack lunch. These children that are on the free lunch program in the schools, and during the summer vacation many would probably would go without lunch that day. For 5 weeks during the summer, Eastminster volunteers gather in our church kitchen and prepare 300 lunches per week. (bologna and cheese, applesauce, cookie and juice box) Sign up to help -- dates are Tuesdays June 5, 12, 19, 26 and July 3—we meet at 10 am in the kitchen. Contact Karen Miller at [email protected] or 678-522-5267 with questions. Three food pantries at MUST distribute a ton of groceries a day with a current increase in demand of 35 percent from the previous year. Eastminster actively collects food goods and delivers them to MUST. Please check the barrels in the lobbies of the main church and the CLC and bring in extra canned goods and non-perishable items. Diapers are always needed. In addition, more than 78,000 hot meals are served in the Loaves and Fishes Kitchen on the Elizabeth Inn campus. Eastminster takes over dinners for approximately 70 people and serves on the 9th of every month. Today MUST has Three Service Centers providing food, clothing, financial aid, education and employment assistance; interview, assessment and referral services, to families and individuals in crisis. Integrated Housing Programs in Cobb, Cherokee, and Douglas Counties dedicated to helping 200+ residents break their own cycle of homelessness. Emergency shelter, transitional housing, and permanent supportive housing and a host of wrap around services provide a healthy environment to foster whole life change. On any given night, MUST Ministries provides a safe night of rest to approximately 140 people through its various housing programs. MUST Ministries has a huge impact on the Cobb community…but there is always a need for more help. We can provide both our “hands on” or monetary gifts, so please see the Missions Committee for more information!
