Perlman Traditionally the synagogue served three main purposes and bore names reecting each of them: Beit Hat’llah, Beit Hamidrash, and Beit Hak’nesset–House of Prayer, House of Study and House of Gathering. Though we don’t always use these names, our congregation’s home serves all of these functions. Over the past couple of years, with the support of our auxiliaries (WNSCI and NSCI Brotherhood), we experimented with the idea of adding a post Kabbalat Shabbat concert to the mix of oerings. In each instance, we enjoyed a wonderful evening. We began with a Kabbalat Shabbat service and followed each service with a light supper and a short concert. This summer, the experiment continues with the added feature of partnering with Ravinia, Steans Institute. A concert highlighting an ensemble from the instrumental cohort from Ravinia Steans Institute will take place July 6 following our Kabbalat Shabbat Service. We will have the opportunity to hear great music performed by musicians embarking on their musical careers. Congregants Madeleine and Harvey Plonsker and James Stone graciously agreed to underwrite this concert so that our community could enjoy this event without charge. They both support the idea that our congregation is uniquely positioned with adequate space to provide oerings to enhance the life of the greater community as well as our own congregational community. It is our intention to nd more opportunities for such collaborations and post Kabbalat Shabbat concert experiences. Concerts such as this on a Shabbat evening satisfy two of the three traditional purposes of the synagogue: worship and gathering as a community. If you join us again on Shabbat morning, you will experience all three traditional functions on one Shabbat by aĴending the Shabbat morning service with Torah study (Beit Hamidrash–House of Study). Traditionally the synagogue served three main purposes and bore names reflecting each of them: Beit Hat’fillah, Beit Hamidrash, and Beit Hak’nesset–House of Prayer, House of Study and House of Gathering. Though we don’t always use these names, our congregation’s home serves all of these functions.

Over the past couple of years, with the support of our auxiliaries (WNSCI and

NSCI Brotherhood), we experimented with the idea ofadding a post Kabbalat Shabbat concert to the mix of offerings.

They both support the idea that our congregation is uniquely positioned with adequate space to provide offerings to enhance the life of the greater community as well as our own congregational community. It is our intention to find more opportunities for such collaborations and post Kabbalat Shabbat concert experiences.

Concerts such as this on a Shabbat evening satisfy two of the three traditional purposes of the synagogue: worship and gathering as a community. If you join us again on Shabbat morning, you will experience all three traditional functions on one Shabbat by a ending the Shabbat morning service with Torah study (Beit Hamidrash–House of Study).

Come home for Shabbat this summer and engage in it all; elevated spirits, minds, and hearts.

Enjoy!

President’s Letter

Reflections, Gratitude, and Looking Ahead

Jody Weinberg

Marilyn Perlman

Over the last several weeks, I have been asked the same two questions: 1. Are you happy your term as president is over and 2. What are you going to do with all your free time? My answers have been simple. To

the first question I say, “Yes and No” and to the 2nd question I say, “Continue to participate at NSCI.”The last three years have been truly enjoyable and fulfilling. And while I am excited to turn the reigns over to Marilyn Perlman and the new Board of Trustees, I will miss the responsibility and almost daily “work” of synagogue business. I am proud of what has been accomplished during my term, and I look forward to seeing what comes next. My goal at the start of my term was to implement our Strategic Direction, and with the help of a fantastic board, wonderful clergy team, dedicated volunteers and amazing staff, I think we have done a pre y good job. We have worked hard to connect with our congregants and to make NSCI warm, welcoming and accessible to all. We have strived to be a resource to our community, to optimize our beautiful building and to be transparent while aligning our budget, staffing and governance with our mission. We also completed several concrete (yes, pun intended) projects including: a new website, new membership and accounting

so ware, upgrading our security systems and training our staff and volunteers, replacing our 50 year old HVAC system, repairing the exterior of our beautiful building and fixing several of the roofs. But the accomplishments of which I am most proud are the friends I have made and the relationships that have I formed. Lucky for me, these will not end when my job as president is done.I found a quote that said “Being president is like running a cemetery–there are lots of people under you, but none of them are listening.” This is not true at NSCI–the people who make up our congregation are the best, and the support I received has been constant and much appreciated. I have more thank you’s to list than there is space in this column–but I would be remiss if I didn’t extend a huge thank you and much gratitude to all who made my term easy, fun, educational and fulfilling! Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to serve.I plan to stay connected and participate on commi ees, in events and in synagogue life. Being involved at NSCI has given more to me than I could ever give back…but I will keep trying. NSCI is positioned to continue to do great work, and I wish every success and endless strength to our incoming Board of Trustees and my entire congregational family.

With gratitude,Jody

As we enjoy the warmth and beauty of summer, NSCI marks a new fiscal year with important planning for the coming year and the installation of our officers and trustees on our board. I am looking forward to

serving our congregation and leading our board in partnership with our exceptional clergy, dedicated staff, and volunteers to continue reaching for our highest potential in all that we do. Our board is commi ed and enthusiastic–much has been accomplished over the last three years with the outstanding leadership of Jody Weinberg. During her term as President, we made great progress in engaging our community, managing our fiscal responsibilities, assessing the maintenance of our magnificent facility, executing necessary repairs, upgrading our security, launching a new web site, transitioning to new membership and accounting so ware, and proactively se ing priorities for our future–to name just a few endeavors! Many thanks to Jody

and all who support our congregation in countless ways. We will continue to elevate NSCI aligned with our mission and strategic directions. I also want to take this opportunity to introduce myself. I grew up at North Shore Congregation Israel. My parents have been commi ed to NSCI for about 50 years. A er a long hiatus, I returned to the North Shore when our first child was about a year old. Seeking the best preschool fit for our daughter, we chose our former NSCI preschool, Gates of Learning. From there, I found that I had come full circle to our congregation. We found our spiritual home and community. It has been a pleasure and privilege to serve in numerous volunteer roles at NSCI-gratifying experiences on so many levels and a wonderful way to connect. There is always the potential to make a new friend, join a purposeful project, gain new knowledge, grow spiritually–or just have fun.Our synagogue community is a center for cultivating Jewish identity and continuity, celebrating Jewish life, Jewish

education and worship, a commitment to Tikkun Olam, and inclusion for all. I invite you to consider your place or your family’s place in our congregation. We are large in size yet small and intimate in the many opportunities we have for developing meaningful relationships and participation. What brought you to NSCI? Which programs, experiences, and aspects of our community match your interests? Are you seeking to connect at NSCI and looking for ways to easily, comfortably do that? Are you already participating and have experiences to share? I welcome your feedback and questions. Please contact me at [email protected]. Let us help you find your place. We are in this together. In the meantime, I look forward to Kabbalat Shabbat services with you outside on the Lillian and Larry Goodman Terrace and sharing in our rich breadth of programs, activities, and worship throughout the year.

L’Shalom,Marilyn Perlman

From Our Executive Director

Todd Braman

My thanks go to each of you who’ve made me feel so welcomed throughout my first few weeks as your new Executive Director. The building has been bustling. Between the end-of-school celebration, the

WNSCI annual dinner, the 4th grade b’nei mitzvot date presentation ritual, and a steady stream of lifecycle events, I’ve had the opportunity to meet so many of you. I look forward to celebrating many more of your personal or family milestones together with you.

For those I haven’t met, I’d like to introduce myself. I’m a Chicago native who grew up in Miller Beach (Gary) and Munster, Indiana. I lived for many years in San Francisco before returning to Chicago to be closer to my extended family. My wife, Xuan-Vu (pronounced Sun-Vous) and I live in Chicago with our two children,

Miles (8) and Isabel (5). Miles will be entering 3rd grade at Bell Elementary School and Isabel will be a kindergartener at Chicago Jewish Day School. We have family throughout Chicagoland, including on the North Shore. My cousins grew up at NSCI, and I a ended many events here as a child.

Professionally, I’ve been running the operations at some of the larger Jewish organizations in the country. I look forward to bringing some of my past experience to you, but also to learning from, and forging new ground with, the incredible group of staff and lay leaders at NSCI. I’ve already discovered that what, at first glance, seemed like a vast but beautiful facility is actually filled with personal opportunities for individuals to find their own unique pathway to Jewish engagement.

One such pathway is the High Holy Days. We at NSCI are already working hard to ensure that your experience will be

seamless and meaningful. This summer, you will receive several communications from our office including a mailing about the Book of Remembrance and our High Holy Day Guilde, where you will find pertinent information about services, parking, seating, and passes. Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call the office. We are happy to help!

NSCI is indeed a special community, and I invite you to connect with me just to say hello or to share your thoughts and vision for NSCI. You can find me at Shabbat services, wandering the halls during programs, or in my office with my door (usually) open.

In my limited spare time you can find me at Wrigley Field, out with my family, or cycling the streets of Chicagoland.

Dr. Roberta Goodman

Goodman Center for Jewish Education

We concluded the 2017/2018 school year with an assembly for all students and parents. We honored our machoniks, teachers, and the retirement of Arvey Wolke.

Arvey has greeted students nearly every day for years, rain, shine, or snow. More than the greeter, Arvey is a role model to our students. Many know his story of growing up in Poland, immigrating to

the United States during the Holocaust, serving in the US military, going to law school, and finally, bringing his commitment to the Jewish people by serving his beloved NSCI. We will all miss Arvey!

As we spend the summer furiously preparing for the 2018/19 school year, we have much to be proud of that came from the school year we just completed.

Goodman Center Mission

How have we fulfilled our the Goodman Center mission?

The student outcomes we aim for are articulated in the following four “Cs”:

Content-Deepen knowledge and skills of Hebrew and Judaism

Character-Strengthen positive Jewish identity and sense of self

Community-Connect to peers, teachers, families, and congregation

Continuity-Inspire Jewish learning and living beyondthe school

In order to achieve these outcomes, our approach is:

We are hands on, experiential learning center tapping into students’ interests, talents, and ways of learning in order to motivate and engage them in Jewish learning and living. Because of that, we give students and families choices of what, how, and when they learn.

Highlights of 2017/18

1. Grants from funders outside of NSCI have contributed greatly to our culture of innovation

o Chidush (CFJE/JUF)–as one of seven congregational schools completing this process, we created a new Sunday

Jewish studies 5th/6th grade Project Based Learning experience

o Dvash (CFJE/JUF)–we implemented a new Hebrew reading program for 3rd through 6th grade based on research

o Camp@NSCI which completed its seventh year, originally a grant from the iCenter, I presented to a New York based network on Innovation in Jewish education.

2. Goodman Center Partners–raised nearly $40,000 from supporters who contribute $500 or more. Some of the funds were earmarked for scholarships and computers. The majority of the funds helped make possible Shabbat experiences, family cooking, special programs, and more.

3. Our school continues to grow with enrollment higher than two years ago, 85 new students, and 43 new families.

o Many of the new families come through our successful Youth and Family Community membership where families can try out our school and congregation paying only tuition at 1.6 the regular rate

o Many of our new families come through the relationships we have built through early engagement for families with children 0–5

4. Purim as an in-school activity.

o The 6th graders took responsibility for Jewish learning and living by organizing the Purim carnival for the first time for children 0-5 and their families as well as our students preschool through 2nd grade.

o 3rd and 4th graders participated in a Mitzvah Purim Carnival where the earned mitzvah dollars they could assign to one of three non-profits helping children here and in Israel.

5. Teacher Assessment–teachers participated in creating standards reflecting excellence in teaching here at NSCI. New teachers were assessed using these standards.

6. Goodman Center Advisory Group–a task force of the Youth and Family Community, led by Taryn Kessel and Dr. Roberta Goodman, prioritized engaging families as their action project. Four programs are planned for next year from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm on Sundays.

Next Year

We are proud of what we have accomplished this year. We have a great foundation to grow as we plan for 2018/19.

Celebrating a Magical Karav WeekendBy Neil RiglerThe TYG just returned from the annual Elaine N. Sherman Karav weekend. For four days we discussed Torah and topics they selected, laughed and played games, worshipped in creative services, and created a caring and supportive community. Once again our teens rose to the occasion by sharing the leadership, with everyone from first-timers to seasoned veterans guiding the group at some point. This year’s theme, as selected by the participants, was “Voice and Choice.” We used this theme to discuss a range of topics from technology and the role of traditions in their lives, to questions about when we step out of ourselves to advocate

for change on a broader level. We also explored the balance between keva and kavanah, between that which is fixed and the different intentions we bring to it. The conversations were rich and meaningful, giving students the chance to explore a range of issues in a safe and supportive se ing. We were also lucky enough to have three members of our B&B (Beyond and Back) group join us as faculty-these 20-somethings are alumni of the program and gave generously of their time and energy to help create this year’s Karav magic. Big thanks to Marni Noeh, Adam Ruben, and Lena Menkes! Students also had plenty of time to learn and laugh with

Rabbis Geffen and Daniels throughout the retreat. They are dynamic and inspiring leaders and we all benefited from extended time with them! A special thanks goes out to our TYG board and especially our Rosh Karav, Isaac Freedman. His passion and love for all Karav represents resulted in a weekend that equally celebrated a concluding experience for our seniors and embraced new participants and inspired them to become the next group of leaders. The TYG year concludes with a Karav reunion dinner and the election of next year’s officers. Watch for announcements about them and key dates for next years events coming soon!

Conversion & Jewish Law in 19th-20th Century Germanywith Roberta Schwartz

June 4 (final class in series of 4)In Germany there was significant difference in how rabbis weighed the ma er ofmixed marriage between late 19th and early 20th centuries. Roberta Schwartz will teach the above topic based upon, Pledges of Jewish Allegiance by David Ellenson and Daniel Gordis, Stanford University Press, 2012. The foundation for that subject ma er is found in exchange of correspondence between rabbis and other rabbis and communities. The Ruthie & Bill Katz Archives

Looking Back to Our FoundingBy Ellen Katz Block

In the early “Jewish geography” of our temple, founding families brought in other families and, since there weren’t many Jewish ‘se lers’ on the North Shore in the 1920s, many of our founders were related to one another. All were members of their community with many of our archival documents reflecting they were respected and upstanding members of the community.

Our first Founding Families article in the December 2017/January 2018 Bulletin was about Alfred S. Alschuler, a founder and the architect of our first synagogue on Vernon Avenue in Glencoe. In the April 2018 Bulletin, we wrote about Alfred’s wife, Rose, a powerhouse in her own right and mentioned that her maternal grandfather, Michael Greenebaum, was

one of the earliest Jews to se le in Chicago and a founder of Chicago Sinai, our spiritual predecessor and the first Reform synagogue in the city. One of Michael’s daughters, Mary, was Rose’s mother. His brother, Elias, was the great-grandfather of our current member, Jim Greenebaum, and, also, a founder of Chicago Sinai.

Rose and Alfred S. Alschuler had five children, one of whom, Alfred S. Alschuler Jr., was an architect, like his father, and quite involved in the plans for our current synagogue.

Another of our Founding Families were Arthur M. and Alma (nee Radzneski) Adler. According to the 1940 U.S. Census, Arthur was a wholesale dealer in “Fats and Oils,” in other words, a tallow broker. He

and Alma married in 1912 and had three children, one of whom, Helene, married Alfred S. Alschuler Jr., Rose and Alfred S. Alschuler Sr.’s son.

Arthur M. and Alma Adler also had a son, Arthur M. Adler Jr., known as “Bud.” Bud married Joan Greenebaum, our current NSCI member, Jim Greenebaum’s sister. Both Arthur and Alma were very active amongst a variety of temple commi ees.

Alma’s sister, Grace, married Isadore Portis and they, too, were among our Founding Families. More to follow on our Founding Family connections.

Our thanks to Jim and Lilli Greenebaum for helping us fill in some of the blanks in NSCI’s historical records.
