God’s Story

Joy Joy will not spare you of suffering, nor did it Jesus. We are not spared the cross; we’re shared the cross… but also the joy that follows. Joy will give you a place in your heart to be well, to be passionately alive, even amidst the changes and chances and sufferings of your life.

-Br. Curtis Almquist

Kitchen Cleaning Thursday June 15 The Meals and Receptions Committee has scheduled a "kitchen cleaning" for June 15. We will begin at 8:30. Please bring a finger food to share.

Remember St. Mark’s in your will.

The Book of Common Prayer reminds clergy to remind the congregation to make provision for the church in their wills. We are blessed here with a number of endowments, both undesignated and designated for specific items. The Veronda Account, for example, helped pay for our bus. The Tweed Fund has enabled us to keep up with this wonderful old beautiful building. St. Mark’s Foundation has been able to initiate new ministries like our Casper College Choir members and numerous other projects through the years. We have been able to decorate the Guild Room with memorial funds and there are plenty of other opportunities. You can set aside money for specific gifts, whether a large endowment to care for the facilities, or smaller ones that simply endow the ongoing costs of printing our bulletins in color or literally keeping the lights on. Please prayerfully consider revising your will for St. Mark’s sake.

-Fr. Jim+

What is Pentecost? The season after Pentecost

According to episcopalchurch.org, is defined as:

It begins on the Monday following Pentecost, and continues through most of the summer and autumn. It may include as many as twenty-eight Sundays, depending on the date of Easter. This includes Trinity Sunday which is the First Sunday after Pentecost. The Book of Common Prayer provides proper collects and readings for the other Sundays of the season. These propers are numbered and designated for use on the Sundays which are closest to specific days in the monthly calendar, whether before or after. For example, Proper 3 is designated for use, if needed, on the Sunday closest to May 25. Proper 29 is designated for use on the Sunday closest to Nov. 23. Prior to the 1979 BCP, Sundays in this long period of the church year were identified and counted in terms of the number of Sundays after Trinity Sunday instead of the number of Sundays after Pentecost. This period is also understood by some as "ordinary time," a period of the church year not dedicated to a particular season or observance, as in the Roman Rite adapted after Vatican II.

The main sign of Pentecost is the color red. It symbolizes joy and the fire of the Holy Spirit. Your

Liturgy Committee reminds you to wear RED on Sunday June 4!

The Sign of Lion summer information!!!!!

The Sign of the Lion wishes everyone a safe and happy sum-mer season! We will be open sporadically due to summer vacation plans. If you are interested in helping out one Sunday over the summer please email Harper at [email protected]. Working the Lion is easy and fun! Thanks to the foresight of Cindy King, the Lion, now has a selection of Thistle Farms products: soaps, healing oils, lotions, room sprays and more! Thistle Farms " supports women survivors of trafficking, prostitution, and addiction" by providing housing, economic independence and support! Each time you buy a product you are supporting this great work! They make lovely gifts for someone needing a little cheering up... or just a little "thinking of you"! We also have two new summer candles, Country Wildflowers and Cloud 9 (my favorite). They smell wonderful! They would be delightful in a guest bathroom or kitchen! Great gift idea! Remember when you support the Thistle Farms you are supporting the Christian Formation fund! Have a great summer! Harper Lee Park

Why Diapers? Some Facts That Might Surprise You

Diapers are as essential to a child’s health and well-being as food, shelter and a parent’s love. An inadequate supply of diapers forces many parents to leave their child in a soiled diaper longer than is appropriate, which frequently leads to diaper rash, and may cause staph infections and urinary tract infections. Uncomfortable babies also experience irritability, prolonged crying and poor sleep. These, in turn, erode mother-child attachment and may lead to lower levels of self-esteem and even depression for parents who are not able to provide the diapers their children need. Families are forced to make choices that can severely impact the health and well-being of both the child and the family. In cases where parents cut back on other expenses to afford diapers, families suffer due to a lack of other necessities. Cutting back on clothing, heat or prescription drugs can negatively affect family members’ health and emotional well-being. Diapers are expensive. Disposable diapers can cost as much as $70.00 to $80.00 per month. Diaper costs are not covered by federal assistance. Federal anti-poverty programs such as Food Stamps do not cover diapers, leaving poor families without the means to properly diaper their children. Families from a range of incomes struggle to afford diapers, including both families who fall below the federal guideline of poverty ($22,350 for a family of four) and families with incomes above the federal poverty guideline. Research suggests that families earning twice the federal poverty guideline still struggle to meet their basic needs. Most laundromats will not accept cloth diapers due to sanitary issues. Most licensed child care programs require parents supply disposable diapers and do not accept alternatives such as cloth diapers. When parents run out of diapers, they are forced to withdraw their children from child care.. Moreover, the unplanned removal of the child from child care when diapers run out may itself cause harm to the child’s well-being. Instability in child care arrangements has been linked to a range of negative outcomes in children, including problems with relationship attachment, social competence, behavior, cognitive ability, language development, school adjustment and overall well-being. Without childcare parents cannot work or attend school.

God Story Most folks have a God story. Most are reluctant to tell theirs for fear of seeming weak-minded or childish. Yet, we have them. The Resurrection of Jesus is a God story. It will never be more than that. It will always shake hands with doubt. Still, that God did the impossible dances around us like butterflies around a flower. All my God stories have the same fragrance as the Resurrection: God refuses to be dismissed. God forgives our rejection. God reconciles us to ourselves and others. God gives us a story to share. Luke 24:13-46

The Rt. Reverend Rob Wright Bishop of Atlanta
