Don Haynes graduates from Corona del Mar High School this month, so commencement is foremost in our family lifethese days. Commencement addresses should not stop inspiring graduates when they flip the graduation tassel on theirmortarboard. The best of such speeches plant seeds inside their hearts and minds that grow into achievements years, even decades later. Here are highlights from some such speeches I hope will encourage us all to forge ahead on ourspiritual journeys, to remember our dreams and to find hope, purpose and peace in our lives.
“What are you waiting for? My good friends we are all waiting. We are waiting, if not for the Messiah, as such, we are waiting for the messianic moment. And the messianic moment is what each and every one of us tries to build, meaning a certain area of humanity that links us to all those who are human and, therefore, desperately trying to fight despair as humanly as possible and --I hope-- with some measure of success.”
- Elie Wiesel, De Paul University commencement, 1997
“When faced with the inevitable, you always have a choice . . .As I learned during my liberal arts education, any symbol can have, in the imaginative context, two versions, a positive and a negative. If you spill your milk, you’re left with a glass which is either half empty or half full . . .You may not be able to alter reality, but you can alter your attitude towards it, and this, paradoxically, alters reality. Try it and see.”
- Margaret Atwood, The University of Toronto commencement, 1983
“You are your own stories and therefore free to imagine and experience what it means to be human. And although you don’t have complete control over the narrative (no author does, I can tell you), you could nevertheless create it . . . So, from my point of view, which is that of a storyteller, I see your life as already artful, waiting, just waiting and ready for you to make it art ”
- Toni Morrison, Wellesley College commencement, 2004

“Turn your wounds into wisdom. You will be wounded many times in your life. You’ll make mistakes. Some people will call them failures but I have learned that failure is really God’s way of saying, ‘Excuse me, you’re moving in the wrong direction.’ It’s just an experience, just an experience. ”
- Oprah Winfrey, Wellesley College commencement, 1997
“It is important to have determination and optimism and patience. If you lack patience, even when you face some small obstacle, you lose courage. There is a Tibetan saying, ‘Even if you have failed at something nine times, you have still given it effort nine times.’ I think that’s important. Use your brain to analyze the situation. Do not rush through it, but think. Once you decide what to do about that obstacle, then there’s a possibility that you will achieve your goal.” - The Dalai Lama, Emory University commencement, 1998
“God says to all of us, you are no chicken; you are an eagle. Fly, eagle, fly. And God wants us to shake ourselves, spread our pinions, and then lift off and soar and rise, and rise toward the confident and the good and the beautiful. Rise toward the compassionate and the gentle and the caring. Rise to become what God intends us to be -- eagles, not chickens. ”
- Desmond Tutu, Brandeis University commencement, 2000
“Never underestimate the power of other people’s love and prayer. When you put someone else at the center of your frame, the entire world changes for you.”
- Tony Snow, Catholic University commencement 2007
“How do you know what is the right path to choose to get the result you desire? The honest answer is this: You won’t. And accepting that greatly eases the anxiety of your life experience. ”
- Jon Stewart, The College of William and Mary commencement 2004
“When well meaning advice and counsel comes at you from all angles, remember the ‘Garden Party’ lyrics of Ricky Nelson: ‘It’s all right now, I’ve learned my lesson well; you see you can’t please ev’ryone so you best please yourself.’”
- me at Saint Margaret of Scotland Episcopal School inSan Juan Capistrano in 1992 after speaking on what mymother taught me about knowing and following one’sconscience.
When I finished, the Headmaster said, “Great speech, Peter. Thank you! But you and I are the only two peoplehere who know who Ricky Nelson is!”
Congratulations and blessings to all graduates!
Yours, in Christ -

CHRISTIANEDUCATION
Our Sunday School has been goingthrough a big transformation in
recent months. If you’ve taken a peekin the Yellow Room, you might havenoticed that we’ve removed the tablesand chairs in anticipation of introducingGodly Play to our curriculum.
This innovative approach to teachingchildren how to worship and betterunderstand God allows for children ofall ages to witness the wonders ofGod’s interaction with us. A group ofSunday School helpers attended aworkshop earlier this year, and haveslowly been integrating this style ofteaching into the classroom.
In May, the Vestry approved theinitial purchase of materials and lessonsto make our Sunday School a full-fledged Godly Play-ground by thebeginning of the school year inSeptember 2012. We encourage youto talk to Anne Conover, KristyKiper or Elizabeth Henry about thistruly wonderful and awe-inspiringprogram. Better yet, stop by and seeus in action.
We are also thrilled to welcomeSusan Caldwell as our new Ministerof Christian Education. She has alreadyjoined our children at Sunday school, sitting with them and taking time tomeet them and let them get to knowher. She brings a fresh approach and astrong background to our churchfamily.
We are truly grateful and excited bythese changes and look forward toexciting our children as well.

PLEASE WELCOMESUSAN CALDWELLOUR MINISTER OF
CHRISTIANEDUCATION
Hello everyone at Saint Michael &All Angels. My name is Susan
Caldwell and I look forward to workingwith you. I have been hired to fill theposition of Director of ChristianEducation.
Presently, I am finishing my work asa guidance assistant for Irvine UnifiedSchool District. I work at Bonita CanyonElementary School and BrywoodElementary School. I teach social skillsin the classroom, and counsel children, grades K-6th.
Prior to coming to Irvine in 2010, myhusband, Steve, and my two daughters,Jacqueline and Elise, lived in Big BearLake, California.
Steve and I worked in the capacity ofpublic school teachers for Bear ValleyUnified and completed ministriesprojects at St. Columba’s Episcopal forfour years. My work at St. Columba’swas primarily dedicated to growing thechildren’s Sunday School and VacationBible School programs.
From 2003-2006, Steve, the girls andI lived in Melbourne, Australia. WhileSteve attended seminary, I taughtreligious education to primary schoolstudents, as well as pursued chaplaincyin public schools. I completed my hoursand CPE units at Brighton SecondaryCollege as the intern chaplain. It was inthis capacity, that I started a Christianclub on campus. While living inMelbourne, we attended St. Michael’sAnglican Church in North Carlton. Iworked in the Sunday school programas a Sunday school teacher and gavechildren’s sermons.
As a native of Southern California, Iam happy to be living in Orange Countyonce again. I grew up in Costa Mesaand attended UCI. My graduate degreeis in the social sciences. I have twoteaching credentials, a Single Subjectin Social Science with an Introductoryin English and a Multiple SubjectCredential. In 2008, I graduated fromConcordia University with a Master inEducation with an emphasis incurriculum and instruction.
Having been asked to answer thequestion, “What do I hope to accomplishat St. Michael’s?” I would like to reflectin two ways.
My hope is to listen to the voice ofthe Lord as how we can best use ourtalents, gifts and resources to fulfillthe Great Commission. What thatlooks like will be specific to the moldand shape of Saint Michael & AllAngels Episcopal Church. God has aspecific plan for this church and weneed to figure out that plan throughprayer and working together as ateam.
I am here to build programs. Pleasefeel free to speak with me if you haveany suggestions. I have compiled a listof possible programs that we canconsider. But first, because time is agreat factor in the growth of thechurch, the summer season is ofutmost importance. Vacation BibleSchool is an all church event, asparishioners can invite their neighbors, extended family members and friendsto attend. This is a program aboutoutreach and meeting the needs of thecommunity-namely partnering withfamilies to raise their children in aGod-honoring way.
I look forward to working with youin the days ahead.

ANGLICAN WORLDMARKS 350 YEARS OFTHE BOOK OFCOMMON PRAYER
By Trevor Grundy[Episcopal News Service]
“Ashes to ashes, dust to dust.”“All the deceits of the world, the flesh
and the devil.”“Read, mark, learn, and inwardly
digest.”Shakespeare? The King James Bible?
Close — the Anglican Book of CommonPrayer, the liturgical and literarymasterpiece that (next to the previoustwo sources) has helped shape theEnglish language and marks its 350thanniversary this year.
St. Paul’s Cathedral in Londoncelebrated the occasion on May 2 witha special service of evensong from the1662 volume. Archbishop of CanterburyRowan Williams attended, along withmembers of Prayer Book societies inAustralia, Canada and the UnitedKingdom.
“I hope and pray that people in Britainand around the English-speaking worldrealize the importance of this greatwork,” Prudence Dailey, chair of thePrayer Book Society in the U.K., toldENI news.
The service is the flagship of anationwide series of events that includesan exhibit at Lambeth Palace Library thatalso acknowledges the 60th anniversaryof Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation, looking at the relationship between themonarchy and the Prayer Book. Itincludes a copy of the first Prayer Book, published in 1549, and the copy used atQueen Victoria’s wedding.
The anniversary actually refers to therevised edition that still stands as theofficial doctrinal standard of the Churchof England and most other churches inthe worldwide Anglican Communion. After Henry VIII’s break with the RomanCatholic Church, Archbishop ofCanterbury Thomas Cranmer set out toreplace the Latin missal with a book ofliturgical services and prayers in Englishthat would also incorporate theologicalchanges, such as less prominence forsaints.
The Prayer Book now appears in manyvariants in the 85-million memberAnglican Communion and hasinfluenced the liturgical texts of otherdenominations.
THE MEN’S GROUP, READERSAND SEEKERS, meets onThursdays at 7:30am in the DavisLibrary to discuss classical andcontemporary thought in theology, science and philosophy. All men areinvited.

Recently I read a particulardiscussion thread on an online
forum for choral conductors. I noticedthat while other threads had views thatnumbered in the low hundreds, thisthread had over three thousand views! The discussion had to do withperceived differences betweenclassical and popular music. Theperson who initiated the thread was ahigh school teacher, and he wasdiscussing an experience he had in theclassroom discussing the‘timelessness’ of classical music. Herecounted that in his discussion heused as an example If ye love me, thefamous Renaissance motet byThomas Tallis. He stated that it hasbeen sung for over five hundred years, and would continue to be sung, because it is ‘timeless.’ As you canimagine, a lively debate ensued amongthe kids and teacher over this topic!
I won’t get into the debate aboutclassical vs. pop, and which is‘better’ or ‘good’ music. I do have acouple of thoughts on the topic oftimelessness though. First though, Iwant to say that I personally do notlike the term ‘classical’ music. I prefer‘art’ music. A discussion about howmusic by the great composers (andmany lesser!) came to be calledclassical music is a topic for anothercolumn. Suffice to say, it is a termthat came about centuries after thefirst music we consider ‘classical’ waswritten.
Now that we have that out of theway, I will say that there is plenty ofart music that is not timeless! As withany genre of music, only the absolutedusting of snow on the tip of theiceberg is known by the public at large.Even among trained classicalmusicians, I would bet that mostwould be hard-pressed to name morethan ten composers from the Baroqueera, for example. Of course there weremany hundreds, if not thousands, more. And when one considers thetotal output of music by the masters,
there is a great amount that is seldomperformed.
I’m pretty sure that the teacherwas, by implication, making a pointabout the fleeting nature of Top 40popular music. However, to play thepart of devil’s advocate, there are songsthat have had lasting appeal throughgenerations which are pop tunes. These songs have somehow survivedthe fate of most #1 hit singles, whichhave their flicker of popularity and thenquickly fade away. To be sure, theymay eventually slide into near oblivion, just as there is a great deal of art musicthat was performed for decades, maybeeven a century, before it lost favor. Icould list several composers who werewildly popular in their lifetime, but noware forgotten. Timelessness, whilesometimes an ancillary feature of goodmusic, is not an essential characteristicof good music (be it high or low). Atany rate, what a funny word! It is notthe easiest word to say, and looks funnyon the page. (And it is not the easiestword to type either...) And, besides, when we are in the grave, it won’tmatter a whit whether certain music istimeless or not!
