“The Sixteen’s Palestrina cycle may just be a classic in the making.” — Gramophone
The Sixteen continues its acclaimed series of discs exploring the work of Italian Renaissance master Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina. An enormous body of sacred works, including over 100 masses, rightly earned Palestrina the title of “the prince and father of music.”
His legacy has impacted sacred music worldwide for over 400 years.

BEETHOVEN: Sonata No. 4 in A minor, Op. 23 • Sonata No. 9 in A major, Op. 47 “Kreutzer”
“Stunning … we were transported through sound to Beethoven’s time.” — Boston Musical Intelligencer
CORO is proud to introduce “CORO Connections,” a new series that will feature all of their guest artists! All featured artists have links to Harry Christophers and The Sixteen, and the first disc features two of Harry’s colleagues from the Handel & Haydn Society: Susanna Ogata (violin) and Ian Watson (fortepiano). Using period instruments for which the music was originally written, Watson and Ogata
strive to reveal not only the clarity of Beethoven’s extraordinary musical structure, but also an amazing palette of colors. In doing so, the duo aims to recreate the white-hot intensity of the moment these striking sonatas were first performed.

SCHUBERT: String Quintet, D. 956
“Compelling … another impressive achievement.” — Gramophone
“Among the finest Dutch period instrument musicians.” — All Music Guide
The prestigious Kuijken Quartet tackles one of the great masterpieces of Romantic chamber music on modern instruments, which is quite unusual for the group! During his lifetime Schubert was primarily known for his exceptional production of lieder. Much of his chamber
music remained unknown, and was only revealed to the public later, by others (including Schumann and Brahms). One such piece is the String Quintet with two cellos, in C major, heard on this recording. It is a whim of fate that this exceptional work remained unknown for
an entire generation after being written in 1828, just a few months before the composer’s death.

“The brightest hope of his generation: a creator who replaced modernist aridity with communicative directness … instrumental brilliance and heart-on-sleeve emotionalism.” — New York Times
After the dramatic success of his previous Passion, comes a new oratorio by one of most accomplished composers of our time! James MacMillan’s musical language is flooded with influences from his Scottish heritage, Catholic faith, social conscience, and close
connection with Celtic folk music, blended with influences from the Far East, Scandinavia, and Eastern Europe. His prolific output has been performed around the world, to great acclaim.

“Spectacular virtuosity and mischievous wit … Red Priest go way over the top but return from the other side with previously unimagined delights.” — BBC Music Magazine
Red Priest is the only early music group in the world to have been compared to the Rolling Stones, Jackson Pollock, the Marx Brothers, Spike Jones, and Cirque du Soleil. This extraordinary acoustic foursome has been described by music critics as “visionary and heretical” with a “break-all-rules, rock-chamber concert approach to early music.” Founded in 1997 and named after flame-haired priest Antonio
Vivaldi, Red Priest has given over a thousand concerts in many of the world’s most prestigious festivals.

“Wonderfully exuberant … simply delightful.” — Fanfare
Following the Billboard Classical chart-topper Come to the River (AVR 2205), which conjured early 19th-century rural Americana, Apollo’s Fire presents an award-winning program created by director Jeannette Sorrell, which follows the joys and sorrows of Celtic
immigrants who settled in Appalachia. Sparkling fiddle tunes and haunting ballads of the British Isles mingled with American shape-note hymns and African spirituals, creating the soulful music known as Appalachian. Passing through love and loss, dancing and prayer,
the music overflows in celebration as the people of the mountains raise their communal voices.

GESUALDO: Tenebræ Responses for Good Friday
“Brilliant.” — BBC Music Magazine
AVIE continues to mine the rich catalog of recordings by Andrew Parrott and his Taverner Consort & Choir with their seminal recording of Tenebræ by Carlo Gesualdo, the harmonically adventurous and experimental 16th-century Italian composer. In this newly repackaged
reissue of the composer’s final group of sacred madrigals devoted to Good Friday, the Taverner singers navigate Gesualdo’s highly symbolic polyphonic structures with idiomatic first-rate performances and incisive scholarship.

MAHLER: Symphony No. 9
Following recent releases named as Gramophone Editor’s Choice, Sunday Times Album of the Week, and MusicWeb Recording of the Month, the Hallé turns to the work of Gustav Mahler. Begun in 1909 in the composer’s idyllic Austrian mountain retreat, at a time when Mahler was preoccupied by thoughts of his own mortality, his last completed symphony has been described as his most death-haunted work. Scored for forces that are modest, by Mahlerian standards, this extended work is characterized by its unusual construction, often
soloistic orchestral writing, evocative use of keys, and haunting use of motives and references to traditional Austrian folk dance. A valuable addition to the Hallé canon of great symphonies!

SEIBER: Ulysses Cantata • Elegy • Three fragments from “A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man”
Mátyás Seiber’s body of work is distinguished by a natural versatility, and by the wide range and eclecticism of his musical interests. It incorporates the successful pop song “By the Fountains of Rome” (1956), which hit the Top 10 on the charts; his score for the animated film Animal Farm (1954); and numerous examples of incidental music for radio and television. Born in Budapest on May 4, 1905, Mátyás Seiber began to learn the cello at the age of ten. He studied composition at the Budapest Academy of Music under Kodály from 1919 to 1924, and in 1925 he entered his Serenade for Wind Sextet in a Budapest competition. When it failed to win the prize, Bartók resigned from the jury in protest! On September 24, 1960 — at the age of 55 — Seiber was killed in a car crash in South Africa during a lecturing tour of the country’s universities. At the time of his tragically early death, he was one of the most respected composition teachers in Britain.

“Hats off to violinist Lucy Gould, cellist Alice Neary, and pianist Benjamin Frith … this was compelling playing, with every note voiced to carry its true functional and emotional weight.” — The Guardian HHHHH
This is the concluding disc in a four-CD collection of Beethoven’s complete music for piano trio, recorded live by the Gould Piano Trio in a series of concerts at St. George’s, Brandon Hill in Bristol, UK. We end the series with a unique coupling that marries the very first work Beethoven wrote for piano trio — the little Trio in E flat composed when he was 22 — with his last work, the supreme masterpiece known as “Archduke” written 20 years later. This CD marks the culmination of one of the most important chamber music recording projects by a British ensemble in recent years.

PAGANINI: 24 Caprices for solo violin
Niccolò Paganini (1782–1840) is a legendary figure in the history of music, who brought about a revolution in violin playing that forever changed the way music was composed for the instrument. Musical contemporaries such as Chopin, Schubert, and Schumann were staggered by the violinist’s great artistry, as were the poets Goethe and Heine. Young Dutch violinist Bob van der Ent has received wide acclaim for his impeccable technique, seasoned interpretations, and characteristic style. With these recordings of Paganini’s 24 Caprices, Bob van der Ent has become the first Dutch violinist of his generation — and one of just a few in the world — to have released the entire cycle.

New Zealand 28 (Maori) Battalion
Tracks include a selection of recordings of the Maori Battalion during WWII
When the soldiers of the legendary Maori Battalion sailed for the Second World War, they took with them songs that embodied the love and prayers of those at home. Atoll Records, in association with the Sound Archives of Radio NZ/Nga Taonga Korero and The National Library of New Zealand, is proud to release this historic two-CD set featuring recordings of the Battalion while it was overseas. These unique recordings were taken live on location in the sands of Egypt, during artillery action in North Africa, and in the green valleys of Southern Italy, by the Middle East Recording Unit of New Zealand’s National Broadcasting Service. The recordings capture the raw exuberance and vigor of the performances, and convey something of the drama of WWII.

The versatility of the solo accordionist is demonstrated, and the program also features transcriptions of Khachaturian’s famous Toccata in E flat minor and Moszkowski’s virtuosic Spanish Caprice. Reworking his ever-popular Septet, Op. 20 (as a Trio for clarinet, cello, and piano) and the Quintet for Piano and Winds, Op. 16 (as a piano quartet with strings), Beethoven reveals remarkable sensitivity to sonority and texture in recapturing his original expressive intentions through new instrumental combinations. His “second thoughts” are given added freshness and clarity by Ensemble DeNOTE’s creative use of period instruments and playing styles.

Here was music by a student, written in the most commanding and confident of romantic idioms, requiring considerable virtuosity for its successful accomplishment.

RÖNTGEN: Suite in Four Movements, Op. 7 • Variations and Finale on a Hungarian Czardas, Op. 25 • Three Romances, Op. 32
Julius Röntgen (1855–1932) was both a composer and a gifted pianist, and he knew how to write well for his instrument. Röntgen was a child prodigy, and from an early age composed ambitious works for the piano. His partnership with baritone Johannes Messchaert was legendary, and they made several European tours. At one of their recitals, in the Vienna Musikvereinsaal, it was noted that Brahms and Grieg sat together in the front row. Recent renewed interest in Röntgen has revealed many treasures still waiting to be awakened in the Röntgen Archives (Den Haag). Alongside a huge series of unknown string quartets, string trios, piano trios, and symphonies there are some 30 piano sonatas and sonatinas from 1922–1932 alone.

Mátyás Seiber studied composition at the Budapest Academy of Music under Kodály, from 1919–1924. At the time of his tragically early death, Seiber was one of the most respected teachers of composition in Britain. Antal Dorati entered the Hungarian Royal Academy of Music in 1920, at age 14. His illustrious career as a conductor has completely overshadowed his compositions. Bartok’s Viola Concerto, commissioned by the Scottish violist William Primrose, was left in sketch form at the time of the composer’s death. The eventual completion by Bartok’s friend Tibor Serly has been the subject of debate ever since its first appearance in 1949.
